'veggies don't eat fish' friend fall out

i'm a veggie i eat dairy produce, but no fish and meat nor have i done since i was a young child, i met a new friend three months ago and she asked about becoming a veggie which she was proud to tell everyone about but she still eats fish, i said that veggies didn't eat fish and that shell fish etc are 'banned' by the veggie society. i like her but she's got a bee in her bonnet and refuses to speak to me, we didn't argue about it about it at the time, i don't understand.

Or as my strictly veggie DH says 'Nothing that did have, or might have had, a face.'.

Veggie is short for vegetable not vegetarian.

"Vegetarian that eats fish"= moron.

Gelatine and rennet arguably don't fall into that category though. And then there's the leather debate....

LeGavrOrf It's because they used to use the stomach as a bag to carry the milk in, then discovered it had turned into cheese.

BaldricksTurnip There is a school of though that the 'veg' in vegetarian doesn't actually refer to vegetables, just to make it confusing. Although vegetarianism definitely isn't a vegetables only diet unless you add other restrictions.

supposedly it comes from vegetus which is lively in Latin as they (the Victorians who founded the society and coined the word) believed that diet would give them vitality.

Do any non-leather wearing veggies have any suggestions of where to get some work shoes? Last time I looked about six months ago I had big problems trying to get any.

I'm a pescetarian. Sometimes I feel like a bit of a dick saying that though and it's easier just to say I'm vegetarian.

Maybe she felt like you were criticising her choice to eat fish? Agree she sounds oversensitive and obviously you are the one who is right, but for the sake of the friendship could you send her a text saying something like: 'I'm sorry if you felt I was being critical, I think it's great that you don't eat meat. Please let's not fall out'

How did you actually fall out about this to the point of not talking! At the end of the day does it matter what she calls herself? I often refer to myself as vegetarian as a shorthand even though I do occasionally eat meat because I like to reserve the right to refuse certain meat.

I am vegetarian. I agree with you, but the way in which you approached it was too blunt and not friendly at all.

It's all a bit pedantic. But strictly speaking people are right and she is a pescetarian. I went to a lecture years ago and there is a lot of cruelty or unacceptable practices involved in the production of milk and eggs.

Learnt something new from this thread about the origins of the term veggie.

Btw I agree that obviously rennet etc aren't veggie but a surprising number of vegetarians don't seem to agree!

Of course there is cruelty in dairy production, you'd have to be incredibly naive or ignorant of the basic physiology of lactation to believe otherwise. ....
