to think that hiring a marketing agency for unborn baby is odd, odd, odd?!

Or am I just over-thinking things?

An acquaintance is pregnant and is paying a marketing agency to choose a name for the baby, given a list of 'brand values' that she would like them to use - so, things like: intelligent, artistic, adventurous, interesting, influential. She's not secretive about this at all, by the way.

The agency's work will also help her and her DH design the baby's bedroom and toys etc.

I've never heard of this before. She's from the States, so perhaps this is more commonplace over there? Her DH is Welsh. Maybe this is big in Swansea?! I honestly think this is barking, but perhaps I'm out of touch (I'm about to become a gran, so it's a while since I've thought of baby names!)

Bonkers! Shock

Some people have more money than sense.

"given a list of 'brand values' that she would like them to use - so, things like: intelligent, artistic, adventurous, interesting, influential"

I really feel for this poor child who no doubt will come into the world with his or hers own "brand" in mind.

mignonette · 24/09/2013 19:55

Is she Beyonce by any chance (who tried to trade mark her Daughters name)?

Ezio · 24/09/2013 19:57

Is she Beyonce by any chance (who tried to trade mark her Daughters name)?

What about all the other children in the world called Blue Ivy, im sure Beyonce aint that original.

UriGeller · 24/09/2013 19:57

OMG what if the baby ends up with the same name as one of mine??!

Please OP, you have to find out what they're naming their new venture product baby

mrspremise · 24/09/2013 20:00

Wankbadger has now officially overtaken cuntpuffin as my insult of choice de jourGrin

trilogyofjuniper · 24/09/2013 20:01

The baby's not due for a while yet, but I'll update on the arrival. I hope they have a naming ceremony.

I'd love it if the Marketing agency suggested 'George'.

Is this woman perchance the barking (and rude) SIL of the poor friend of someone on here who tried to turn her baby's christening into a three-ring circus, complete with kickbacks to the SIL?

that was my first thought. Either way, she needs introducing to the Baby Shower planner guy because that would be an epic meeting of delusions minds.

BlastOff · 24/09/2013 20:07

I have heard of this, but in the states and on a tv programme. Not anyone in RL. Wow, can't wait to hear what name they come up with!

YoniMitchell · 24/09/2013 20:13

Christ! I actually work in marketing and am pregnant with what will without doubt be PFB and even I think this is a load of wank! Honestly, I really don't think a top/global/whatever agency would take this loon seriously! A bunch of shysters on the look out to fleece an idiot... Possibly!

miffybun73 · 24/09/2013 20:14

YANBU, completely nutso.

WilsonFrickett · 24/09/2013 20:16

OMG! Her, the branding consultants and crazed Christening planner guy! What a team Grin

bigmouthstrikesagain · 24/09/2013 20:40

Cheers 30 minutes of my life I am never going to get back watching the first episode of 'Pregnant in Heels' Wink - mostly slack jawed in shock at over priviliged Noo Yorkers hiring a think tank so they can name their baby ( 'Bowen' if you want to know). FFs Grin

Vintagebeads · 24/09/2013 20:41

I saw that program too. It's on sky.
This British woman is a baby concierge Confused in NYC.She had one couple who wanted a powerful name for their child and she set up a boardroom of people from CEO types to artists to help them select a name.

The worst one was a woman who wanted this woman to choose the child's godmother from two friends, and set them against each other in tasks. really must stop watching utter shite

Snazzyenjoyingsummer · 24/09/2013 20:46

Srsly? Confused

squoosh it is very Ab Fab, yes!

OP, I will be looking out for the 'focus group' thread in baby names now...

Iamsparklyknickers · 24/09/2013 20:49

[crosses fingers hoping they name the baby something dainty and she ends up wrestling]

Nope, never heard of it and wish I was merciless enough to start a business doing it - couldn't promote it with a straight face unfortunately.

NotYoMomma · 24/09/2013 20:50

imagine!

woe! when I named you Cath Kidsonie I did not anticipate you joining a biker gang and collecting guns!

I researched creative names and purchased numerous musical instruments and easels and my ds is now a cobbler

what IS the point?!?! children are children!

Sleepyhoglet · 24/09/2013 20:54

Global branding for a child. Not, surely this is a hoax. Please?

Sleepyhoglet · 24/09/2013 20:56

So do they want a made up name created for their child?

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 24/09/2013 20:58

Fuck. me.

FredFredGeorge · 24/09/2013 20:59

Astonished by the amount of surprise and abuse this idea has, when the number of people moving areas or inventing religious convictions for schools has nothing like the amount of venom against it. If you're for the idea of investing in your children, then there's nothing wrong with spending such money on someone to help with naming etc.

Ummmmmm.......................what??

Snazzyenjoyingsummer · 24/09/2013 21:33

OK, now I really want to watch Pregnant in Heels! What UK tv channel can I get it on? (I like to watch stuff the old-school way...)

WafflyVersatile It's been a while since I read Freakonomics but I thought they found that names did make a difference in job applications when names that had different ethnic associations were used? I seem to remember them sending out job applications that were identical in terms of qualifications, experience etc but one was from, let's say, Michael and one from DeShawn, and Michael got a lot more interviews than DeShawn.

IrisWildthyme · 24/09/2013 22:01

Oh My Actual God this is insane.

I'm not sure I can say any more as my head has exploded with quite how insane this is...
