To think this customer was downright abusive?

In the shop I work in we have half an hour browsing time, which is a pain but it always has done.

Most customers are lovely and when you explain are fine, some get annoyed but appreciate it isn't the staffs fault.

But today myself and a colleague were filling up and a customer came over and said why aren't the tills open?

So then I politely explained that we are not allowed to trade due to legal reasons and apologized. She said can't I just leave the money? I said I'm sorry but we are not allowed to do that.

I've got kids outside in the car I just need a picnic, again I explained its illegal to trade.

She said well what time is it now? I said its 20 past. She said you expect me to stand around till half past? I explained again, and then she threw her shopping at us saying this is ridiculous and stormed out the shop!

Luckily I had my colleague who backed me up and said I was very polite, and another colleague saw her throwing the stuff, and the manager said she would back us up if anything came of it.

I'm just Shock that she thought this was acceptable!

She was having a bad day. Just shrug and smile.

YouTheCat · 22/09/2013 19:37

The customer was rude and vile. Surely most people know about the Sunday trading rules by now?

InTheRedCorner · 22/09/2013 19:37

Ya but some people are twats (you are not one of them)

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 22/09/2013 19:38

I can see why she was pissed off, what a stupid way to run a shop. Is that normal?

No need for throwing stuff.

InTheRedCorner · 22/09/2013 19:38

What?? Yanbu not ya but Shock

spongebob13 · 22/09/2013 19:39

TediousFool · 22/09/2013 19:39

Working retail would be lovely if it wasn't for the horrible customers.

am I reading this right that the shop opens but no tills open for another half an hour so no one can actually buy anything? what genius came up with that?

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 22/09/2013 19:40

Sunday trading rules? Don't you just go into a shop and buy stuff?

YouTheCat · 22/09/2013 19:40

She was very rude.

What is this trading rule? I live in Scotland, I don't think we have it?!

TediousFool · 22/09/2013 19:41

ILetHim, yup very normal, all big stores do it. Have done for years.

AgentProvocateur · 22/09/2013 19:41

Browsing time?! What an odd concept - you can be in the shop, but you can't buy?

I've never heard of that. We don't have that in Scotland, so if I came into your shop and was told that I could look but not buy, I'd be pissed off too.

YouTheCat · 22/09/2013 19:42

Shops can only trade for 6 hours on a Sunday. They may open 30 minutes before trading for browsing.

If the shop hadn't been open for browsing then the foul abusive woman wouldn't have been able to buy anything anyway because the shop would have been shut.

Lonecatwithkitten · 22/09/2013 19:42

Browsing time is really common here, but there is usually a big sign up just inside the stores between 10 and 10.30am. Stating that no purchases can be made.

YouTheCat · 22/09/2013 19:42

Yes but, Agent, would you then take it out on a retail assistant?

spongebob13 · 22/09/2013 19:43

ah I get ye now .. still think the browsing half hour is stupid! is the shop clearly posted saying this? that would bug me no end if I was her but no need for her reaction.

Rachel778 · 22/09/2013 19:44

I couldn't work with the public .

YANBU

invicta · 22/09/2013 19:44

She was rude. Browsing time is quite common, and extends the opening times of shops.

TediousFool · 22/09/2013 19:44

It's quite handy in supermarkets when you're doing a big shop that takes a bit of time because by the time you've got the stuff you want the checkouts are just opening, you've managed to avoid people and managed to get your weekly shop done. WIN.

LovesBeingOnHoliday · 22/09/2013 19:44

I've seen people throw money and walk out with stuff, really don't get why Tgey do tgis

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 22/09/2013 19:45

Is it an English thing?

AgentProvocateur · 22/09/2013 19:45

No, I wouldn't take it out on the sales assistant because I am nice! Wink

I would probably choose not to go back to a shop with such a stupid rule though - surely it's so annoying, it's counter productive. Or do ALL shops do it?

LittleMissGerardLouiseButler · 22/09/2013 19:46

I don't see the point of browsing time and can see why customers get frustrated, but I think it's rude that she threw sandwiches and drinks at me. I expect people to not be impressed when I tell them, but not to get stuff thrown at me! I don't get paid enough to be treated like shit!
