To think this customer was downright abusive?

In the shop I work in we have half an hour browsing time, which is a pain but it always has done.

Most customers are lovely and when you explain are fine, some get annoyed but appreciate it isn't the staffs fault.

But today myself and a colleague were filling up and a customer came over and said why aren't the tills open?

So then I politely explained that we are not allowed to trade due to legal reasons and apologized. She said can't I just leave the money? I said I'm sorry but we are not allowed to do that.

I've got kids outside in the car I just need a picnic, again I explained its illegal to trade.

She said well what time is it now? I said its 20 past. She said you expect me to stand around till half past? I explained again, and then she threw her shopping at us saying this is ridiculous and stormed out the shop!

Luckily I had my colleague who backed me up and said I was very polite, and another colleague saw her throwing the stuff, and the manager said she would back us up if anything came of it.

I'm just Shock that she thought this was acceptable!

I frequently make use of 24 hour shops, I finish work at 1am, drive to the supermarket and do my shopping. And because I'm in Scotland, I can do this any day of the week.

This browsing time seems really stupid.

I've always said that you will never truly realise how rude people can be until you've worked in retail. I worked in Argos for several years during my late teens and early twenties. I had people scream abuse at me because the home delivery service only operated between 8am and 6pm on weekdays, like I was solely responsible for something that was company policy!

Once I helped a woman carry a heavy box to her car in the pouring rain and didn't get so much as a thank you for it. So many people seem to have no manners, no please, no thank you, people who'd stand by the collection point, waving their tickets and screaming "there's mine!!" Like petulant toddlers when they could see how busy you were.

Now I always mark sure I smile and speak politely to shop assistants. So many people treat them like dirt and show them little or no respect, remember they are not responsible for company policy. They get paid shit money and really shouldn't have to put up with what they do!
