AIBU re Ebay

Sold a car on Ebay last night

Buyer rings me this morning and says he doesn't want / can't come and get it or pay for it until next weekend.

That's not great as we were selling it as we need the cash.

I contacted him again and said, look sorry but we have someone who wants to buy it this weekend and we need the money. I know you bought it on Ebay but you aren't willing to pay for it for over a week and that just doesn't work for us.

AIBU? He is now hounding me with calls, texts and voicemails kicking off that he has sold his car on the back of buying ours

I can appreciate it's not ideal for him, but if you buy something I don't think not wanting to pay for it for 8 days is ideal for us either

Am I being totally U by going back on the Ebay sale or is he for buying something he can't pay for for over a week?

Gin I bought a vehicle off ebay and we were both happy! But it is entitely possible that I am also a fuckwit. Smile

LilyBossom · 21/09/2013 23:12

because a buyer can claim not received and ebay will refund them as you have no online proof of delivery

GinOnTwoWheels · 21/09/2013 23:13

Pixie, you do't do paypal on collection only items cos fuckwits (techincal term for anyone who buys on ebay and has unrealistic expections or has set out to diddle the seller) can then claim that they have not received the item and, in the absence of a courier tracking number, receive a paypal refund, while keeping the item.

GinOnTwoWheels · 21/09/2013 23:16

Cross post with Lily. The reality is that ebay don't want to deal with private sellers selling their old stuff, they want to deal with businesses selling millions of widgets each week, as that makes them more money.

Which is a shame, because it was great while it lasted.

I've bought my last 3 cars on eBay. I've always contacted the seller within 24hrs of winning the auction, collected at the nearest weekend and paid cash when I got there. But I like to think that I'm not a fuckwit Grin

We sold our old car on e-bay recently, totally honest listing (car only started sporadically, faulty ECU) chap who bought it turned up within 48hr with a recovery vehicle and paid in cash - bless him, he even texted me a couple of weeks later to let me know what was wrong with the bloody thing.

There are some good buyers on there!

If you do relist, my advice would be to leave til the end of the auction, unless someone turns up to look at it with cash and pays there and then.

Check feedback of anyone who bids - when we listed ours some twat bid it up to way more than it was worth, his feedback was awful so we declined his bid and blocked him. You can also update your settings so noone with less than X feedback can bid.

Good luck with the sale Grin

LaGuardia · 22/09/2013 04:29

Why on earth would you tax it when that was not part of the original listing? He won't show, I can almost guarantee it. Total timewaster. Relist it now.

pixiegumboot · 22/09/2013 19:12

So I was thinking - wouldn't that be a matter for the police, given that the buyer is committing fraud by contacting PayPal for a refund on supposed non delivery of a cash on collection item?

and what about forged £20 notes, aren't you leaving yourself open to this for cash on collection items?

lljkk · 22/09/2013 19:18

Don't relist until you've closed transaction with the 8-day buyer. Gets you all sorts of trouble if you don't follow proper procedure.

If he's already left bad feedback you've nothing to lose by filing UID against him.

GiveItYourBestShot · 22/09/2013 19:31

Pixie - for any signifiant amount you can arrange to meet at a bank or post office and pay the money straight in to your account.

catgirl1976 · 22/09/2013 20:01

Thanks everyone

Seems like I am not alone with frustrating buyers

I havent used ebay for ages as I have found it has really gone down hill

of course claiming via paypal is fraud but OP would need to get small claims involved etc by the time she had done all that even if she proved the fraud she would with expenses be out of pocket for a small sum relatively like £500 I doubt police would be that interested unless part of bigger scam

Pixie as giveit said you transfer the cash at a bank for a large sum, I think the risk of forged £20 notes is minuscule compared to paypal refunding

if paypal would accept a certain type of receipt for collected goods it would be better but their view is that any receipt could be forged unless tracked delivery, why they would not accept VS for transfer of ownership I do not know it's not likely you would have given them V% without the money!
