AIBU re Ebay

Sold a car on Ebay last night

Buyer rings me this morning and says he doesn't want / can't come and get it or pay for it until next weekend.

That's not great as we were selling it as we need the cash.

I contacted him again and said, look sorry but we have someone who wants to buy it this weekend and we need the money. I know you bought it on Ebay but you aren't willing to pay for it for over a week and that just doesn't work for us.

AIBU? He is now hounding me with calls, texts and voicemails kicking off that he has sold his car on the back of buying ours

I can appreciate it's not ideal for him, but if you buy something I don't think not wanting to pay for it for 8 days is ideal for us either

Am I being totally U by going back on the Ebay sale or is he for buying something he can't pay for for over a week?

Definitely tell him to pog off then! You don't click to buy, make extra demands then say " by the way, I can't pay you just now anyway "!!! Just wait the required 2 days, email him the rules and relist it.

I hate time wasters, he's made it so even if you sell to someone else it'll still be days before you get anyone - what a nob!!!

catgirl1976 · 21/09/2013 13:20

I'll talk to ebay and sell to someone else

I had a possible buyer for this weekend but I turned them down as I had sold it to him and now they are not interested so I have got to start again

I will clearly state timescales in the ad this time though

you must never take paypal for collected item, and never for a car

Open the unpaid case in 48 hours and add him to your blocked bidder list too.

BabylonReturns · 21/09/2013 13:21

Cheeky swine. YANBU, and don't put the tax on it either - what's the betting he doesn't turn up.

I'd sell it elsewhere if you've got a buyer who will take it off your hands this weekend.

PrincessWellington · 21/09/2013 15:53

Tell him you want £100 to keep it until Sunday. If he doesn't do that, relist

kali110 · 21/09/2013 15:57

Dont agree about the tax tho cheeky git

bellablot · 21/09/2013 16:05

Yes YABU, I would be peeved off to, you should have stated in your advert payment and collection within a certain period of time. However, he is also BU for not contacting and asking if he can pick up a week after.

pigletmania · 21/09/2013 16:07

Yanbu at al. I hate it when buyers mess about. He should have contacted you before bidding. If he continues to harass you, report him to e bay

greenfolder · 21/09/2013 16:15

You won't be able to tax without insurance

PomBearArmy · 21/09/2013 19:10

YADNBU!

GiveItYourBestShot · 21/09/2013 19:55

YANBU! I recently bought a vehicle on ebay which I couldn't collect for a week, but I checked before bidding that the buyer would be OK with that. You can offer to cancel the transaction, which saves you the selling fees, but he doesn't have to agree.

catgirl1976 · 21/09/2013 20:02

He's left me really shitty feedback even though I have tried to resolve this amicably Angry

OP posts:
phantomnamechanger · 21/09/2013 20:04

if its not taxed, how can he come and pick it up straight away? he cant do it online if the vehicle is not yet registered to his address as the disc will be mailed to you. He would therefore need to come to you and collect the MOT documents, take it along with his new insurance docs (which will take a while to arrive, even by email) to the post office, get the tax disc then come back and collect the car!

I do agree though that all this should have been discussed before sale was agreed.

catgirl1976 · 21/09/2013 20:18

We live a 30 second walk away from a Post Office and I let him know this

OP posts:
PrincessWellington · 21/09/2013 20:23

Dispute the feedback if you like it might be revoked

LilyBossom · 21/09/2013 20:25

that feedback will be removed if you file and close a non paying case against him.

geekgal · 21/09/2013 20:29

If he's giving you bad feedback because he didn't meet the sales requirements then contact eBay straight away and tell them he's harassing you. Because thats what it is, really, he bought something he couldn't afford and you caught him out, that's his fault, not yours.

catgirl1976 · 21/09/2013 20:36

Right - will contact them and ask them to remove it

Thank you

OP posts:
LilyBossom · 21/09/2013 20:39

tomorrow night, 48 hours after auction end, you need to open an unpaid case against him. When you close it 4 days later he will get a strike, feedback will be removed plus you will get the final value fees refunded, otherwise you will be out of pocket 10% of the price to ebay too.

catgirl1976 · 21/09/2013 20:42

Thanks Llily - will do that

I don't want to pay Ebay for the non sale

OP posts:
sarahtigh · 21/09/2013 20:44

you can't leave feedback if you have not paid, so if he does not pay you can get his feedback removed no problem

however small warning re starting non payment case, you open case he has 4 days to pay he then pays by paypal collects car then files claim with ebay saying not delivered ebay refund him you have no car and no cash,

no evidence whatsoever even a V5 will be accepted by paypal/ebay as evidence of delivery which will leave you with small claims court, I suggest you sell again and risk a non performing seller claim being started

if he pays by paypal refund immediately and state cash on collection only deep within paypal advice it does say that cash on collection is best,

BACS transfer is also safe as not reversible but do not take cheque either

catgirl1976 · 21/09/2013 20:47

Brilliant - thanks for that - I could have been caught out there as I would have assumed V5 would have been proof of delivery :(

You have my sympathies OP. I am of the opinion that only fuckwits buy vehicles on eBay. Apologies to anyone who has actually bought a car/van/whatever, and turned up in a reasonable timescale and handed over cash equivalent to the bid price without argument and taken the motor away with no further contact, except to leave nice feedback. But from my experience, that person does not exist.

I had a total moron not buy an old car from me on ebay a couple of years ago. From his feedback, he seemed to have some sad little hobby of fucking with the minds of people selling vehicles and then giving them negs for spurious reasons. Remember that buyers cannot be negged! However his negative feedback to me mysteriously disappeared a few months later, so perhaps he finally got thrown off ebay.

We have just 'sold' DPs old van. Buyer no.1 allegedly came at the agreed time, didn't like the look of the van, despite it being honestly described as a shitheap, with supporting photographic evidence, and skulked off without knocking on the door, only to email several hours later to offer a massively reduced price.

Buyer no. 1 got told to do one. Second chance offer was not taken up, but the third chance offer was. However, I emailed them yesterday with the whole friendly 'thanks for byuying my van, when do you want to come and get it' palaver, only to be met with 24 hours of stone cold silence. So breath is not being held right now.

Sympathies with the whole payment/timescale thing. I would suggest a paypal deposit, and might go with their 'next weekend' plan, but this is very annoying and even more so if they then don't buy your car, as you will then have to start the whole process again. I would put any requirements on collection timescales in the listing and ask them to contact you if they can't meet it. I would also be wary about the 'buy it now' as this just invites the fuckwits to press the buy it now button and then dick you about for ever and a day afterwards. However, many people will only be able to do stuff like collect vehicles at the weekend, and payday for NHS staff and a lot of other public sector workers is the 25th, so that might be why they can't do the collection until next weekend.

sarahtigh · 21/09/2013 22:44

I sold my last car on ebay no problems but although had not sold car on ebay my DH was up to speed on car scams which exist in autotrader etc, too we listed with faults etc and photos and we have done plenty of both private and business selling on ebay

but said in terms contact to be made within 2 hours of auction ending, collection by XXX and payment in cash only or BACS; viewings welcome before auction and a mobile number to answer any questions

if selling large ticket items like cars I would advocate giving a mobile number also i would advocate selling before auction ends to someone who turns up in person with cash, with an offer above the minimum you are prepared to accept expecting them to come again in person 3 days later is bound to annoy them

don't do paypal anything EVER on collection items

in this case ending on a friday to enable weekend collection ( friday ending normally not the best they came and paid saturday munchtime

pixiegumboot · 21/09/2013 22:56

why no PayPal on collected items?
