Here DM Link if it bothers you.

Why should he foot the bill? And his car was off the road for 2 days so he's really out of pocket.

My friend had her baby in the bathroom of her rented house.

The birth made a massive mess on the bathroom carpet. When she got home from hospital she cut a hole in the carpet around the stain as she couldn't clean it up.

When she moved out, she was very upset the landlord took money out of the deposit to replace the bathroom carpet.

I still can't get over the fact that she cut the carpet up and didn't think the landlord would not think she was responsible for sorting the carpet out.

Of course they should pay, that poor bloke lost his livelihood for two days. Also, amniotic fluid stinks. Never having a home birth for that very reason.

Maybe they thought that they wouldn't be charged because they were having a baby (rather than someone throwing up in a taxi, drunk)

When I was pg with my PFB , lots of stores gave you freebies if you gave birth/went into labour in the store.
They probably thought they'd get a free cab ride into the bargain?

(When I was very pg in Sainburys, day before my due date, the checkout lady pushed my shopping through extra quick just in case she'd be obliged to get the "Hot Water, Soap and a Towel" Grin

Of course she shoud pay. More worrying is the fact the family cannot muster £40 yet are continuing to bring children into the world.

they are lucky it was a car cleaning bill.

I trashed my v v expensive bed by unexpectedly giving birth on it. cost me a lot more than 40 quid!

We're in Germany and when I was pregnant with DD1 we didn't have a car, so I knew we'd be reliant on a taxi to get us to the birthing centre - 20 minutes drive. So I researched the law (which is obviously not necessarily going to be the same as Britain). Essentially German taxis are obliged to take labouring women as paying travellers because they (taxis, not the women) are part of the public transport network, and if they refused to take one they would be fined because it contravenes the terms of their licence. But the women are also liable for any damage or loss in the same way as any other travellers. For this reason, we were advised to take a waterproof sheet with us to go on the taxi seat. Of course I'd be liable for any damage - if we damaged our own car we'd have to pay for it too, wouldn't we?
In the end, I got into the taxi later than expected because things all progressed a bit too quickly, and had 7 major contractions in that 20 minute journey, but fortunately no waters breaking and no birth! The taxi driver was terrified, though.
