Here DM Link if it bothers you.

Why should he foot the bill? And his car was off the road for 2 days so he's really out of pocket.

I can imagine the scenario should it have happened to me I would have been

'I am so sorry about your taxi, I am really sorry, OMG look at the state of your taxi, DH you must give him the money for cleaning it, I feel awful' etc.

But that's just me.Grin

Agree they should pay and to be fair the taxi driver said pay when you have it.

The poor fella has to earn a living too.

BrianTheMole · 19/09/2013 20:49

Of course they should pay for it. Why should the driver pay for it, esp after he's lost 2 days takings.

Dobbiesmum · 19/09/2013 20:51

I actually went to hospital in a cab when my waters broke with DS but I did warn them first! The driver was a sweetheart, I brought a big towel with me and he put a carrier bag down on the seat first. He drove so carefully I actually had to ask him to speed up then he walked me to the door of the mat unit Grin
DH phoned to check the next day just in case I had leaked but all was fine.

DontPanicMrMannering · 19/09/2013 20:54

They have a cheek saying they can't afford it so shouldn't pay taxi drivers in Yorkshire aren't exactly rolling in it.

No wonder they won't pick up labering women.

MidniteScribbler · 19/09/2013 20:55

Of course they should pay. The driver isn't demanding they don't eat this week, he has said pay it when you can. Even if they gave him a pound a week until it is paid off, that's the responsible thing to do. The driver might have three kids of his own to support, and losing two days wages would be a significant dent in his income.

I also imagine that it wouldn't be a simple case of vacuuming out the car. Bodily fluids would mean a professional cleaning and decontamination of the vehicle in case of any infections.

PresidentServalan · 19/09/2013 21:01

Unfortunately if they are prepared to let their story be covered by a national newspaper, that's what will happen. And I have never heard the phrase 'if you can't feed them don't breed them' but its true. They have 3 kids, taxpayer is supporting them - of course people are going to be pissed off. The fact they are moaning about having to pay does rather underline the irresponsible and feckless angle.

TSSDNCOP · 19/09/2013 21:10

No doubt whatever he should have billed them, I'm amazed it was only £40. That said flogging the story to the papers probably covered it.

After 2 previous kids you'd sort of thought she'd have known it wasnt going to be a TV birth.

EllesAngel · 19/09/2013 21:14

It isn't just any two days either. I would imagine that Fridays and Saturdays are the busiest days of the week. They do need to work out a way to pay it.

StuntBottom · 19/09/2013 21:16

I would imagine that the Daily Mail paid them more than £40 for the story so they should now be able to afford to pay up!

PatPig · 19/09/2013 21:31

Yeah they'd probably get about £500 for flogging that tbf.

LegoAcupuncture · 19/09/2013 21:34

I'm with the taxi driver. £40 probably just about covers the valet.

Sparklingbrook · 19/09/2013 21:37

It's in the Mirror too. Grin

PatPig · 19/09/2013 21:44

Looks like they got the story from the local paper.

www.gazettelive.co.uk/news/redcar-woman-who-gave-birth-6063684

So probably they didn't make any money out of it after all.

Fools.

Sparklingbrook · 19/09/2013 21:45

It will probably be covered on The Wright Stuff soon, or they will be on This Morning. Hmm

They should pay.they're lucky the taxi took her!
"We paid £16" ern yeah the fare to the hospital.
Just because they're on benefits doesnt mean she shouldn't have to pay. This has made the poor bloke loose wages. Going to be even bloody harder for pregnant women to get a taxi now.
She should be ashamed that shes even trying to get out of paying.

Hulababy · 19/09/2013 21:56

I am surprised he can't claim on his insurance - though I guess the excess would be the issue regardless.

She could probably claim on her insurance too if she has it - again excess may be the issue.

Otherwise - yes, she should pay up. However, if he knew she was in labour when he picked her up, then he should have stated the costs involved at the start too or refused the fare.

MidniteScribbler · 19/09/2013 21:57

A woman who gave birth to her baby boy on the front seat of a taxi was shocked to receive a £40 valeting bill from the cab driver two days later.

How can you be "shocked" to receive a bill for cleaning up a mess you have made? Every taxi I've ever been in (in quite a few countries) if you look at where they list the fares and charges, there is always a fee for a soiled taxi.

greenfolder · 19/09/2013 22:23

I should think the fecking daily mail should pay the taxi driver in return for giving them something to put in their putrid rag.

RoonilWazlibWuvsHermyown · 19/09/2013 22:47

They are so bloody entitled! I was so grateful that our taxi would take me when I was groaning like a cow and obviously in labour. If I'd got anything anywhere, I would have offered before he even had to ask. I think this is a case of thinking their birth is super special so they shouldn't have to pay any clean up because I WAS HAVING A BABY YOU GUYS!

Jellybeanz1 · 20/09/2013 00:01

Yes of course they should pay. It cost us £50 when dd was sick. The annoying thing was it was due to drivers speed and style of driving.

EldritchCleavage · 20/09/2013 00:04

I had pph when I had DS, it was like Resevoir Dogs in that room. £40 is cheap.

QuintessentialShadows · 20/09/2013 00:08

I am not going to say it either. So I wont.

But I am with the taxi driver.

loveliesbleeding1 · 20/09/2013 13:55

Absolutely with the cab driver on this one, but the comments towards this young family on the dm website were really horrible, for all anyone knows he may have lost his job in the last few weeks.

Floggingmolly · 20/09/2013 15:19

Totally normal, I would have thought. We were charged an extra £50 when dd threw up in the taxi to the airport. He was very nice about it; but explained that his car would be off the road until fit to travel in again, which would lose him a lot of money. Fair enough.
