to think that the unemployed are little better than guinea pigs?

Well Ian Duncan Smith seems to think that unemployed people (extend that to all UC claimants in future) should be used as guinea pigs in drugs trials.

I wonder, if you fail to offer up your body to be used by the huge pharmaceuticals giants as nothing more than a lab rat, will you be sanctioned? www.scriptonitedaily.com/

Whilst I see nothing wrong with people taking part in trials for cash reward and nothing wrong with pursuing medical breakthroughs, there is something quite disturbing when you remove choice and replace this with compulsion. Combined with the recent government rhetoric around welfare claimants and cuts to welfare, the new stringent rules around applying and the sanction regime this just smacks of a new right wing onslaught against what they consider untermensch.

Am I being unreasonable to ask where this will all end? or are the conservatives unreasonable to compel people to be lab rats?

I am genuinely frightened about what is going to happen to the UK in the near future.

We are in a worse state (in real terms) than the rest of Europe (bar Ireland). A friend of DH's has been an economist for over 20 years and he has said far worse is to come. Don't believe the propaganda the government is spouting. #

Unless you are v.wealthy (and I don't mean just a few tens of thousands in the bank), it could get unimaginably grim.

Dahlen, I think the screen shots are legit, and I would expect the mainstream news media to pick up the story at some point.

ParsingFancy · 17/09/2013 15:57

OK, if you google the listing "Do you have eczema covering 5% or more of your body" right now, it comes up on at least 8 job-advertising websites, including jobs.thesun.co.uk/.

The advert is the same as the screen shot of the DWP job-advertising website, including the typo in the last sentence.

So it does seem likely the DWP advert is/was also real.

ElizabetaLuknichnaTomanovskaya · 17/09/2013 15:59

Dahlen good point. I have been tweeting (and no I am nothing to do with scriptowhatsit) I would hope that someone would pick up on this. I guess its a bit like the furore over workfare, ordinary people started talking long before the mainstream press and BBC jumped in.

Personally I think the mainstream press is part of the problem and not the solution sometimes. They actively choose what to report, therefore they choose what not to report.

ah, I could ask a friend to log in, maybe she can see if it comes up. Not sure if she is still classed as unemployed though. Either that or we need someone else with a DWP job search account to verify it.

How about the unemployed flog a kidney, an egg or blood?!
Surely that's the next step

Dahlen · 17/09/2013 16:16

If it's true (and I can see ParsingFancy's scenario of 13.31 playing out in RL, where everyone will wring their hands but no one is accountable), it really deserves to hit the headlines and cause some government embarrassment.

I'm a bit Hmm that it is true, but will readily accept that I could well fall into ElizabetaLuknichnaTomanovskaya's category of it seems so unbelievable that "rational" people refuse to accept it is happening.

ElizabetaLuknichnaTomanovskaya · 17/09/2013 16:29

I have just done a search using the same terms "Do you have eczema covering 5% or more of your body" and one of the sites I am taken to is Adzuna. It is on the Adzuna site www.adzuna.co.uk/jobs/north-west-england/advertising-assistant and if you look at the screen shot it is Adzuna.

Am wondering how these trials would pass an ethics committee though, if people were 'compelled' to participate? Surely the trial would be thrown out.

I agree ubik.

Yesterday I searched the you gov jobs site which is open to all and found that if I searched for London, Adzuna all of the ads placed before 11th had been taken off. Although you can search for job ads posted up to 30 days ago these ads have been removed, why? Can only speculate as to why that might be.
