to think that the unemployed are little better than guinea pigs?

ElizabetaLuknichnaTomanovskaya · 17/09/2013 12:07

Well Ian Duncan Smith seems to think that unemployed people (extend that to all UC claimants in future) should be used as guinea pigs in drugs trials.

I wonder, if you fail to offer up your body to be used by the huge pharmaceuticals giants as nothing more than a lab rat, will you be sanctioned? www.scriptonitedaily.com/

Whilst I see nothing wrong with people taking part in trials for cash reward and nothing wrong with pursuing medical breakthroughs, there is something quite disturbing when you remove choice and replace this with compulsion. Combined with the recent government rhetoric around welfare claimants and cuts to welfare, the new stringent rules around applying and the sanction regime this just smacks of a new right wing onslaught against what they consider untermensch.

Am I being unreasonable to ask where this will all end? or are the conservatives unreasonable to compel people to be lab rats?

Surely this wouldn't be allowed from an ethical perspective? Surely the regulatory authorities would have something to say about it?

It's disturbing to say the least.

Viviennemary · 17/09/2013 13:12

I don't believe this for an instance. Nobody could be forced to take part in clinical trials.

softlysoftly · 17/09/2013 13:13

Awful that they are on there BUT I'm not buying that this is forced, not from an openly biased piece.

Also a link to where the government has used "chav, scum, skiver" please.

SilverStreak7 · 17/09/2013 13:17

No way would I do clinical trials .. I remember reading some years ago about people who were extremely ill afterwards, something to do with swelling I think (was an after effect) .

SaskiaRembrandtVampireHunter · 17/09/2013 13:21

That is absolutely shocking.

Goldfishfinger · 17/09/2013 13:24

YABU to use the term 'guinea pig'. These trials are vital for medical research and getting new drugs to patients who need them and the volunteers who do these trials shouldn't be belittled. Participating in them though is not in any way shape or form a 'job' and any notion of people being coerced into joining is against all UK regulations. They are 'volunteers' for a reason and the government is very stupid to suggest otherwise.

soul2000 · 17/09/2013 13:27

This is appalling. If this happens, i will start beliveing Alex jones/David Icke.

It is basically choosing which people deserve to live, and which people if things go wrong wont be missed.

I think this is another one of the IDIOT DOING STUPID. IDS ideas who is quite frankly the biggest joke in a ocean of prats.

CiderBomb · 17/09/2013 13:30

Ian Duncan-Smith is one nasty, bullying cunt. There's something very sick and twisted about picking on and demonising the most vulnerable members of society, it's like something from the Middle Ages. I believe in karma and I really hope that he gets some of his nastiness back.

ParsingFancy · 17/09/2013 13:31

We don't know if anyone has yet been forced. But listing these activities as "jobs" means people could be forced. It comes down to the individual JobCentre clerk.

The politicians will say, "Of course the JobCentre clerks shouldn't be including this particular listing when sanctioning people for refusing to accept jobs."

And the JobCentre clerk can say, "It's on the system, it's not up to me to censor that. And anyway I have targets to meet."

Involving people in medical experimentation is something that should never be down to a JobCentre clerk's choice, so the activities should not be on the job-seeking system in the first place.

Darkesteyes · 17/09/2013 13:53

This is horrific. In 1933 and im talking PRE Holocaust not the Holocaust itself. There was a lot of propaganda against disabled and poor people Ive seen some of the posters from that time. It hardened the publics hearts towards these groups of people.

Fast forward to the present day and disability hate crime has skyrocketed Flame away but i can certainly see the connection IDS is a psychopath and not fit to be in office.

ubik · 17/09/2013 13:59

Yy - it's the way policies are implemented all the time, the people have no idea how real life plays out - or perhaps they just don't give a fuck.

ParsingFancy · 17/09/2013 14:03

There are similar clinical trials advertised on myleedsjobs.co.uk www.myleedsjobs.co.uk/recruiter/covance-jobs.

The "Do you have eczema covering 5% or more of your body?"6 is there, plus "Diabetic? You could volunteer for paid medical trials" and "Are you prescribed Statins?".^

I'm not sure how I feel about those ads. If they're on an agency site, presumably one couldn't be sanctioned for not applying?

On the other hand, they're still not jobs. And shouldn't be confused with such.

soul2000 · 17/09/2013 14:05

Darkestyes. IDS is not a pscyothpath he is just an idiot. All of the politicians from all the parties are full of "SHIT".

They are all coming up with desperate ways to either save or make money.

not one politician has come up with a sensible idea, on any policy in the last 5 years that will make an improvment to peoples lives.

noisytoys · 17/09/2013 14:19

This is shocking and very very scary Sad

KatyTheCleaningLady · 17/09/2013 14:23

A few years ago, a job centre listing from a strip club caused a furor.

Some people will prey on the vulnerable.

I think the problem is that the job seeker may feel compelled to do it, lest they are lumped in with the work shy who don't fancy stacking supermarket shelves.

ParsingFancy · 17/09/2013 14:41

amicissimma, you've missed an important piece of info.

People on JobSeekers Allowance don't get to pick and choose what's appropriate for them (although there can be some leeway for the first n weeks).

JobCentre clerks have the power to stop a person's income if they refuse a job.

Which is why designating these experiments as "jobs" is so worrying.

NandH · 17/09/2013 14:45

This has got to be a joke.... surely? ... that's sick otherwise!

ElizabetaLuknichnaTomanovskaya · 17/09/2013 14:46

Yy I agree this is very likely. In fact I am now so cynical I believe that this just simply means A)no one takes responsibility B)it may continue even if challenged just as workfare has continued c) the government worm their way out because it seems to unbelievable that "rational" people refuse to accept it is happening.

Goldfishfinger please don't try to turn this around to make me look as though I am denigrating genuine volunteers or I am in any way anti medical research. I am not. I simply wanted to discuss this very important ethical issue with others and wanted to raise awareness of it.

ParsingFancy Very odd that it could be confused with employment, I agree. The link in the screenshot on scriptionite shows clearly that it is the DWP site.

MurderOfGoths · 17/09/2013 14:55

Didn't this happen the other week as well? Or is it the same ads?

PaulSmenis · 17/09/2013 15:23

Bloody hell. That's awful, but the sad fact is that I know people who would agree that forcing unemployed people to take part in medical trials is a good idea.
