Every time dd brings one to me I do an inward groan. I hate the stories in them, the pictures, the everything.

Id imagined getting the set, so have picked up a few in Charity Shops but am seriously contemplating donating them all back again.

Raaaaaar!

My DS likes them, I did too when I was little. I wonder what age group people think they are aimed at? I think the stories have some quite complex interactions, probably aimed at ages 5-8 to read to themselves rather than pre-schoolers? I certainly read them to myself.

A quick google shows Roger Hargreaves did them for his son, he started when his son was 8. OP - how old is your dd?

thefemaleJoshLyman · 14/09/2013 19:34

I loved them as achild and quite like reading them to my DC but HATE Beatrix Potter, terrifyingly awful.

colleysmill · 14/09/2013 19:42

Ds loves them and whilst I don't mind them what I object to is reading the same ones Every single night.

His favourites are Mr tickle (quite like that one) andittle miss bloody neat (as she is known in our house) The posted cheese sandwich was funny back in May but its not now.

Trouble is ds likes my speed read monotone synopsis which makes him laugh more.

She is 22mo.

Her favourite is Stick Man (JD)

Horrible horrible horrible 'books'. Like Roger Hargreaves used to write one a day on the toilet and not bother to edit.

MIL buys them occasionally and I wasn't sure why until I realised the motorway services between her and us sells them for a pound.

I don't charity shop I recycle - can't bear the thought of anyone having to read this shit when there are real books out there Grin

SomethingOnce · 14/09/2013 20:45

I though it was just me! We've a box set, hidden away still wrapped, that I don't want to inflict on the world via the charity shop bit recycling it seems a bit wrong. It's a dilemma.

I loathe the Mr Men books and DS1 (7) was bought a full set at birth and both dcs love them.

I think, actually, there are only about 6 element to all the stories that are endlessly recycled:

  1. A Mr Man goes for a walk.
  2. A Mr Man meets a number of apparently human characters who live nearby and have jobs that closely resemble their names.
  3. A Mr Man meets a wizard who needs to teach him a valuable lesson.
  4. A Mr Man goes to stay with another Mr Man in order to be taught a valuable lesson.
  5. A Mr Man decides to see a doctor. And learns a valuable lesson.
  6. A Mr Man decides to go for another walk. And learns a valuable lesson.

Honestly, I've been meaning to do a spreadsheet for years...
