To hate the Little Miss / Mr Man books?

Every time dd brings one to me I do an inward groan. I hate the stories in them, the pictures, the everything.

Id imagined getting the set, so have picked up a few in Charity Shops but am seriously contemplating donating them all back again.

Raaaaaar!

They are terrible to read, so long winded.

I thought great when we bought the set as I had fond memories.

The early ones are better, towards the end of the numbers it goes downhill badly. Mr Brave is a disgrace Wink

Can't do Little Miss.

I like having the Mr Men books, but other things are better to read out loud.

WitchOfEndor · 14/09/2013 10:57

I hate them, and the Thomas books which we have a 30 book boxed set of thanks to Nanna. The stories are crap but we didn't realise it when we were kids. There are so many better books out there to buy.

MurderOfGoths · 14/09/2013 11:10

I had really fond memories of them, but now I'm reading them to DS they are shit aren't they?

treadheavily · 14/09/2013 11:17

I vividly recall having - and loving - Mr Nosy when I was little so I bought some for my kids but I HATE reading them to the extent I have hidden them.

They are so sexist and poorly written and downright tedious.

PrincessTeacake · 14/09/2013 12:30

The books are awful but the new TV series is brilliant. I still watch it long after the mindees have lost interest.

morethanpotatoprints · 14/09/2013 12:47

My dc loved these books, we also had the full set, but the 1980's version.

Bearleigh · 14/09/2013 13:16

Anyone on here with Channel Island connections who has had to read the Joey books out loud? BabyBearleigh used to love them; but the appalling grammar! The appalling punctuation! The dreadful cartoons!

The stories were quite fun to be fair, and when Baby saw the actual Joey plane he was thrilled.

(For those without CI connections they are the adventures of a little plane with the call sign Joey that flies between the islands. I believe the airline commissioned the stories when they took on the real plane, and gave it a face).

Believe me the MrMen stories are Dostoyevsky in comparison.

SmallSherryforMedicinal · 14/09/2013 13:49

Another one here that now really dislikes them. I hate how Mr Nosy is basically bullied and physically punished by the townspeople for the cardinal sin of taking an interest in his environment. And here we are, supposedly encouraging our children's curious nature!.

I'll be disappearing these books as soon as I can!

HopeForTheBest · 14/09/2013 13:51

I loved them as a child, but as an adult the appeal is somewhat limited.
Ds (6.6) thinks they are fantastic, so I'm enjoying reading them to him.

Rosduk · 14/09/2013 13:53

Yanbu- Mr Men, Alfie and Thomas books are all a yawn fest!

RedHelenB · 14/09/2013 15:02

They're not meant to appeal to adults but nearly every child I've ever met loved reading them & having them read to them. And I can't see they're sexist at all so maybe someone might like to explain how they are?

Pawprint · 14/09/2013 15:10

I remember liking them as a child but my mum loathed them because she thought they were badly drawn and the stories were rubbish.

I loathe the Thomas books and am so glad ds is too old for them now.

raffle · 14/09/2013 15:16

These are DS latest special interest, he is on the spectrum and is an all or nothing kind of boy. The house is overflowing with Mr Man tat. I don't hate them at present but can imagine I might if he doesn't switch special interests soon :)

pictish · 14/09/2013 15:19

Hate them. Clumsy and laborious to read aloud, with some dubious practices within. My heart always sinks when they want a Mr Men book. They're shit aren't they?

YABU, Mr Men are classic books! We love them. Smile

ZingWantsCake · 14/09/2013 16:06

Oh no!" - said little miss Zing and started to cry Sad

Numberlock · 14/09/2013 16:10

amici that link is brilliant!

ohmeohmyforgotlogin · 14/09/2013 16:17

Hat them too. Refused to read the load we were given that were rapidly donated elsewhere.

MurderOfGoths · 14/09/2013 16:19

Meg and Mog aren't as good as I remember either.

On the plus side George and Matilda Mouse have stood the test of time.

gazzalw · 14/09/2013 16:22

I don't like the language either...I seem to recall that they weren't a particularly enjoyable read language or plot wise!

AllSWornOut · 14/09/2013 16:22

The Thomas books are my real bugbear, don't find Mr Men so bad in comparison. My Mum bought DC1 a Thomas book for his first birthday. It was dire and I asked her not to buy any more. Every birthday and Christmas we get more fecking Thomas books as,"I remember you said you liked them Smile"

Aaaaaargh.

MoominMammasHandbag · 14/09/2013 16:29

Well I am a proper meanie and refuse point blank to read anything tedious; that includes Mr Men, Thomas and any badly written book-of-the-TV show/film drivel. Oh yeah and I loathe Peter Rabbit too.
Fortunately DH is a soft touch and picks up the slack. We are currently reading Prince Caspian, which is quite enjoyable actually.

Oh no!

I love them! DS loves them.

They are great. We especially love Mr. Greedy at the moment.
