DS having school lunch sat on the floor, AIBU?

Long story short, building work as DS school has over run massively during summer holidays. Class rooms and hall remain unfinished.
Fair enough, no surprise, but these things happen.

School dinner pupils are eating in the halls, packed lunch pupils are eating packed lunch sat on the classroom floor.
This could go on until christmas.

His teacher was unable to offer an explanation as to why they could not sit at tables and chairs in the classroom. I suspect just so it saves them wiping them afterwards.

AIBU in thinking this is a bit off? He is in year 1, I'm not usually a germ freak, but this doesn't seem right to me. When I asked his teacher if she would eat her lunch sat on the floor everyday she said Yes! Of course I would and looked at me like I was mad!

Please tell me if I am being unreasonable, as I have PMT, and I am really not sure.

Thanks

Well I presume they won't just eat for four months but yes it is just a picnic.

Therealamandaclarke · 13/09/2013 20:07

Whatever. obviously to some ppl the idea of using an available table to eat lunch is ridiculous and over zealous.

LittleBearPad · 13/09/2013 20:08

It's a bit precious.

In what way is it precious to eat at a table?
This makes no sense.

NewNameforNewTerm · 13/09/2013 20:11

Is sitting on the carpet during "carpet time" unhygienic and demeaning as well?

toobreathless · 13/09/2013 20:13

I don't get the four month thing? Surely it's either OK or not? Why does the length of time matter.

Sounds quite exciting to me...!

KirjavaTheCat · 13/09/2013 20:13

Fact is there are tables Confused

Surely it's irrelevant whether people find it hygienic or not, they could be sat at tables! Why aren't they?

Therealamandaclarke · 13/09/2013 20:17

It makes no sense for them to sit on the floor or that period of time.
They should sit at the tables. It's better for plenty of reasons. Hygiene being one of them.
It takes less than a minute to clean a table after eating.
If there is a great deal of mess it will be more of a problem to clean from a carpet than a table.
Why is it so precious to sit at a table to eat?

Therealamandaclarke · 13/09/2013 20:18

I don't personally think it's demeaning.
Just stupid

NiceTabard · 13/09/2013 20:20

They should be able to sit at the available tables and chairs.

I suspect they will make more mess eating while sitting on the floor than if pulled up to a table, apart from anything else. It doesn't really make any sense. Get all the cups of water and put them down all around the floor and they're asking to be accidentally kicked over and so on. Bizarre.

LittleBearPad · 13/09/2013 20:20

Because it doesn't matter.

The children are happy (we presume). Most people have said their kids would think it was fun.
The decision has been taken for reasons we don't know (but may include the teacher preparing for the afternoons lessons and putting out materials.

Calm down.

Therealamandaclarke · 13/09/2013 20:21

"carpet time" is not the same as lunch time.

In families where it is the done thing to eat whilst sitting on the floor it is also common practice to remove ones shoes before entering the room.

LittleBearPad · 13/09/2013 20:22

Not a big fan of carpet picnics then?

I doubt any caught anything nasty from having a carpet picnic. I really can't summon up enough fucks to give one Grin

somersethouse · 13/09/2013 20:26

Children need to be taught table manners for one thing.

Another, the totally illogical argument about tables taking too long to clean, in that case, what the hell is happening with the floor...

Honestly, please, children sitting at the table for their packed lunch. This is England.

Therealamandaclarke · 13/09/2013 20:26

It doesn't matter to you

it does matter to the op.

I'm not sure anyone has suggested legal action.
Just chatting about whether ppl would be happy about it and some of the reasons for those views.

NiceTabard · 13/09/2013 20:27

I feel rather sorry for the school cleaner/s TBH.

Unless they are going to run the hoover over after lunch to pick up all the debris / stop it getting stomped around all over the place.

I'm not sure the school have thought it through.

Therealamandaclarke · 13/09/2013 20:28

Ok. I see the "proud not to give a shit - anyone who does is hysterical and pearl clutching" flags are out.
Nite.

Ok. I see my post was deleted Grin
But really. The reason that ppl don't put shoes on tables is because it's not hygienic. The fact that I know that doesn't mean I am suggesting ppl would choose to put their shoes in order to "float their boat"
And I'm perfectly calm.
Just puzzled why they would make that decision
And also surprised to find ppl happy to accept it without any question.

unlucky83 · 13/09/2013 20:37

All the classrooms at DDs primary are carpeted so all the children have indoor shoes - usually gym shoes- that are never worn anywhere except inside ...
So I wouldn't have a problem with them eating where they have circle time (except I guess adults don't change their shoes...and they the children wear them in the loos...Hmm)
But still wouldn't have a problem ...

LittleBearPad · 13/09/2013 20:38

Oh well if we're in England...

somersethouse · 13/09/2013 20:43

We are not in NZ as another poster said, outside.
England in Autumn Winter term is coild outside, it is NOT picnic weather, it is cold and there are carpets.

Why can the children not sit at the bloody tables.
Crikey.
