DS having school lunch sat on the floor, AIBU?

Long story short, building work as DS school has over run massively during summer holidays. Class rooms and hall remain unfinished.
Fair enough, no surprise, but these things happen.

School dinner pupils are eating in the halls, packed lunch pupils are eating packed lunch sat on the classroom floor.
This could go on until christmas.

His teacher was unable to offer an explanation as to why they could not sit at tables and chairs in the classroom. I suspect just so it saves them wiping them afterwards.

AIBU in thinking this is a bit off? He is in year 1, I'm not usually a germ freak, but this doesn't seem right to me. When I asked his teacher if she would eat her lunch sat on the floor everyday she said Yes! Of course I would and looked at me like I was mad!

Please tell me if I am being unreasonable, as I have PMT, and I am really not sure.

Thanks

I cant believe some of the ignorant comments.. Australians are lesser people, Indian people must eat on the floor and people who sit and eat on the floor are animals.

Notafoodbabyanymore · 18/09/2013 05:26

But trotter neither of those things were due to sitting on the floor. One was due to incorrect storage of food, and one was a wasp sting, which could happen anywhere.

Besides, the OP was about sitting inside, not outside in the rain Hmm

What are the actual risks of sitting on the floor to eat lunch?

VestaCurry · 18/09/2013 06:49

No racism going on here, covert or otherwise Hmm Sad. I taught mainly in inner London schools where English was the second language for 90% of pupils. I easily learnt as much from the children as they did from me because of this incredible diversity.

From a practical point of view I just found it easier and quicker to wipe down tables than the carpeted sitting area which would invariably end up with various sticky juice drink spillages that the children then would end up sitting in during the afternoon, despite best efforts to clean it up.

The idea that this could be interpreted as racism of any kind on my part makes my stomach turn.

trotterthegreat · 18/09/2013 06:59

i agree neither off the two thing's where the due to sitting on the floor i was just simply trying say if they where sitting inside at a table and not on the floor like a dog, and have a better way of storing the kids packed lunch's 1. all food brought in must be chilled/ kept cool away from any heat source to eliminate any threat of food poisoning

  1. their is a greater chance of get a wasp sting sitting out side with all the kids in place eating their packed lunch's this time of year ( every know wasp are a pest when eating outside ..

i just think it's bad they make our kids eat sitting down on the floor
even the job i'm in we are told not to sit on the floor and eat due to hygienic issues here's a list short list for you >

Helminths (worms):
the oxyuroid pinworm Syphacia muris in 67% of the rats
the strongoloyd parasite Nippostronglyus brasiliensis found in 23%
the liver worm Capillaria in 23%
the cestode Hymenolepsis diminuta in 22%
Toxocara cati causing Toxocariasis in 15%
the oxyuroid pinworm Heterakis spp. in 14%
the cestode Hymenolepsis nana in 11%
the intestinal tapeworm Taenia taeniaeformis in 11%
Bacteria
Leptospira spp. bacteria causing Weil's disease in 14%
Listeria spp. bacteria causing listeriosis in 11%
Yersinia enterocolitica bacteria causing yersiniosis in 11%
Pasturella spp. bacteria causing Pasturellosis in 6%
Pseudomonas spp. bacteria causing Meilioidosis in 4%
Protozoa
Cryptosporidium parvum causing cryptosporidiosis in 63% of the rats
Toxoplasma gondii causing toxoplasmosis in 35%
Trypanosoma lewisii in 29%
Eimeria separata in 8%
Rickettsia
Coxiella burnetti evidence of infection by Q fever in 34%
Viruses
Hantavirus causing Hantaan-fever or hemorrhagic fever in 5%
Ectoparasites (note: these ectoparasites are vectors for diseases which are transmissible to humans, such as typhus)
Fleas found on 100% of the rats
Mites found on 67%

Capillaria hepatica in 25.6% of rats
Hymenolepis diminuta in 32.6%
Taenia taeniaeformis metacestode in 65.1%

Salmonella
8% of fecal samples from rats from the West Midlands, UK, tested positive for salmonella (Hilton et al.2002).

so all that is greater when sitting down from a dirty floor outside , even so a floor inside can be just as bad from foot traffic !!!

i know you not eating off a floor , i'm just saying the risk is greater and i would say most kids put their hands flat on the floor to help them sit when from a standing position
also just like to add it's not just rat's that carry diseases some in insects ,birds too

i was just having a dig, i think it very bad for the kids off today having to sit on the floor to eat and some kids like mine are not aloud to eat their packed lunches inside the school only in a open outside classroom in all weathers make you think great Britain is becoming more like a 3rd world place lol

curlew · 18/09/2013 10:09

I'm amazed we're all still alive.....

Rufus43 · 18/09/2013 10:30

vesta I think the racism comment was in relation to a poster to said that the children should not eat on the floor "like animals" . Inferring that people who eat off the floor are animals

VestaCurry · 18/09/2013 11:07

Ah, thanks Rufus Smile.

valiumredhead · 18/09/2013 13:37

And the fact that apparently Australians have no mannersHmm

Notafoodbabyanymore · 18/09/2013 16:01

Well trotter that's an impressive list, but according to another list I read, based on statistics from the US centre for disease control, there are more bacteria on the average kitchen table than on the average toilet seat. Would you rather eat your lunch off a toilet seat than off a kitchen table? You'd be exposed to fewer bacteria if you did!

The point is, theories and preferences aside, is sitting on a carpeted floor to eat lunch actually going to harm children? I say it's highly unlikely.

OP, come back to us in, say, a months time and let us know if there has been a rise in illness amongst your DS's class as a result of this floor sitting. Please.

(See, us Aussies can use manners and all that!) Wink

SirChenjin · 18/09/2013 16:10

Yes, but you Aussie's can't spell Wink Grin

Notafoodbabyanymore · 19/09/2013 05:00

What did I spell wrong? Am I being thick because I'm Australian ?

MidniteScribbler · 19/09/2013 06:56

if so you still think it's ok then you must be a teacher who cant be bothered what happens to kids as long as you don't get disturbed drinking your black tasteless coffee and your wholemeal jam sandwich from the comfort of the a warm chair in the teachers rest room lol

I don't drink coffee, don't like sandwiches, usually only ever make it to the staff room at lunch if we have a meeting, and if the students are sitting inside eating their lunch, I'm right there with them. Sorry if that doesn't fit with your image.

MidniteScribbler · 19/09/2013 06:58

Nah Notafoodbabyanymore, apparently I can't spell because of my username. Because we all know that usernames are a fantastic indication about someone's level of literacy.

SirChenjin · 19/09/2013 08:01

It's true, Midnite

valiumredhead · 19/09/2013 08:12

You probably can't spell due to all the times you sat in the floor to eat lunch you know-you probably caught some sort of spelling bugWink

MidniteScribbler · 19/09/2013 09:52

Ahhh that explains it. Any common sense I had was drained out through my dirty feet, because after all, us Aussies don't wear shoes, and in to our filthy carpet where I forever lost the ability to spell, or even speak in a coherent sentence.

Notafoodbabyanymore · 19/09/2013 11:21

Hahaha... ok, got it, I was being thick, sorry. Is a spelling bug like a spelling bee?

Grin
valiumredhead · 19/09/2013 11:53

I meant a spelling germGrin

OrmirianResurgam · 19/09/2013 12:04

On the floor? Sounds like heaven for most children. It's only temporary.

trotterthegreat · 20/09/2013 20:45

OrmirianResurgam "It's only temporary" you say lol
it's permanent it my kids school no eating packed lunch's with in the school only outside class room for them in the wind, rain or shine even in the cold bless them !!!!
