I've done with out a cooker and for the most part it's made me cook. Healthier for almost two years. I can. Do almost any trig except fry and egg and cook mince.

(Sonic buy quorn and do with out egg) it can be done just takes longer and a bit of forward planning.

I recently decided to. Get an oven. Second hand 25.. which was great. Really excited. Till I found out it would cost at least 80 pounds. Feom local gas. Enginere to fix it in. And British gas wanted 110.

More than tipple what the cooker is.plus I have no quantity the cooker won't pack up in a month as it was from. A stranger so I decided not to go ahead with it.

I can't afford to have. It fitted.. Abu to think your gas company or electriy company. Should fit themfor free or at least at a small price not 110.

I've decided to save up for a new one but I just wondered if others thought. The. Same.
I probably am and just. Having a bad woe is me day.

I'm having problems decoding your post. I can't make up my mind if you are posting from a phone/tablet or if you are fairly drunk.

You expect a company to offer a service for free? Is that the jist?

wonderingsoul · 12/09/2013 19:22

Sorry I'm on my phone..fat fingers

Kinky (and the inevitable others that will pile in) don't be a dick, it's not that difficult to understand.

wonderingsoul · 12/09/2013 19:23

Well not free.. but some thing that's a lot cheaper than 110 when a cooker is normAlly a basic need?

OP posts:
GoofyIsACow · 12/09/2013 19:24

Of course they wont fit it for free! Unfortunately gas fitting is expensive, i would have got an electric one and plugged it in!

kinkyfuckery · 12/09/2013 19:25

I'm not being a dick, thanks. I do actually find it difficult to understand. For one, the title suggests that the company don't install ovens - then the OP goes on to speak about doing it for a cost....

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 12/09/2013 19:25

Was there a gas oven in the kitchen initially?

HeySoulSister · 12/09/2013 19:27

you still need an electrician for an electric oven....but no,i think you need to pay to ensure its all done safely

littlewhitebag · 12/09/2013 19:28

Why would any company want to fit a cooker for free? How would they make any money to pay the fitter? I had a new kitchen fitted recently complete with new cooker which went in the exactly place the old cooker was. However the connectors for the new cooker were different and there were pipes etc which need to be changed and checked. It is not a quick plug into the gas and go type job.

wonderingsoul · 12/09/2013 19:38

I dint end up buying it in the end as it wasn't worth the risk of it packing up.

Ok not free..and I understand they need to make money but British gas and the like are hardly your little family business so should be to offer the service at a cheaper rate.

hardboiledeggsandnuts · 12/09/2013 19:51

They are a major company, not a charity, they have huge operating costs. Of course their prices are high!

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 12/09/2013 20:00

British Gas are twats. Overcharging, bodging twats. Go to an independent Gas Safe engineer and ask what he'll charge.

Jan49 · 12/09/2013 21:37

You could buy a mini electric oven which just sits on a work surface and plugs in so no installation required. Ones that just work as an oven seem to start from around £25 but I bought one for £80 that had 2 hobs on top so I could boil and fry too.

dexter73 · 12/09/2013 21:51

I wired in my own electric oven. It is just like wiring a plug. Cost me £2 for the cable.

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/09/2013 17:54

try yell.com for a cheaper quote but yes you will have to pay for a fit

my oh is gas safe registered and generally charges £75/80 to install cookers- works in kent if you/anyone needs a cooker engineer message me - also does property maintenance inside and out shameless plug for his business lol Grin

mrsjay · 13/09/2013 18:13

British gas is a huge company for profit, look around for a cheaper plumber gas fitter to do it, get quotes, MY dh wouldn't charge that but he couldnt charge a lot anyway as he has no business IYSWIM but is qualified to do it.

phantomnamechanger · 13/09/2013 18:37

I'm not sure whether or not you have a hob? (why cant you cook egg or mince - you can even microwave mince?)

If you can't afford the installation, could you afford the extra bill for the fuel it would use? Plenty of people thesedays have ovens they don't use because of the cost - they use mircowaves or quick one pan meals

Lots of people advertise used kitchen units or bathroom suites on freecycle - should they be installed for free too?

DoJo · 13/09/2013 18:44

How much do you think it should cost?

wonderingsoul · 14/09/2013 11:40

i dont have a hob, and how do you microwave mince? thats not scarky..i didnt knwo it was safe?.. i use quarn..which you can microwave.
i can afford the extra bills because its not alump sum on eone go..

if i brought a second hand cooker i would still think british gas or who ever is your gas company to fit it at a cheaper rate.

im not talking about small companys but big one like bg should be able to offer it at a cheaper rate, as a ball mark £40- 50 max.

OP posts:
Groovee · 14/09/2013 11:54

My dh used to be self employed. That would have cost £40 plus VAT from him as it would be the hourly charge. But prices may have gone up in the last year.

As for BG, they are a rip off. £800 for a power flush which an independent usually charges about £300 for as it needs 2 men!

SuperiorCat · 14/09/2013 11:54

The cost of becoming Gas Safe is massive - around £3k and has to be renewed regularly. They are highly qualified and well trained because if they get their job wrong it can cost lives. That is why it is so expensive.

It is not a case of a quick bit of soldering, they have to make sure that the whole system is safe, which takes time and expertise.

Groovee · 14/09/2013 11:55

Oh and a lot of good engineers will not fit a second hand cooker as they don't know where it came from and can affect their registration if anything goes wrong with it as Gas Safe would be called in and the installer blamed!

ShellyBoobs · 14/09/2013 11:55

I'm baffled as to what your point is, OP.

If a company can get customers at £100, why would they charge £50?

They don't owe you a favour.

It's like saying you think bread should be 50p per loaf instead of a £1.50, because it's a basic need.

Do you not understand how the economy works, or something?

ShellyBoobs · 14/09/2013 11:56

By the way, OP, you can do your own gas fitting if you want to.

You don't have to employ a Gas Safe engineer to do it.

ParkerTheThief · 14/09/2013 11:57

OP, if I buy a second hand car I don't expect the garage to service it at a discount rate.
Why is a cooker any different?
