to think it's odd to wear a "going out" dress to work?

There's a woman I work with, I don't know her as she works in a different department but she comes across as she always makes the effort to look nice and always had her hair styled and make-up done.

(Whereas me I'm more of a 5 minutes, quick brush my hair and thats it)

Today I was behind her in a queue to get a coffee and she was wearing something like this -

Aibu to think this is quite an odd choice to wear to work?? (Btw the work is office based)

I have a dress I wear out and to work. It's like this but plain black. Going out, I wear it with killer heels and matching bag (usually hot pink!), but for work I apply a strategically placed safety pin, put a little fitted cardi on and either ballet flats or mid heeled courts or steel toe capped boots
That, however, is hilarious!! And no, not office wear. Grin

WhoNickedMyName · 11/09/2013 18:47

If, as you said in your OP, you're a "five minute, quick brush of the hair" type, then you'd probably consider me overdressed for work.

I wouldn't wear that dress in particular but I would wear what some people would call "going out" dresses for work - usually when I'm going out after work.

DontmindifIdo · 11/09/2013 18:47

Did anyone see the photos of the ladies who'd just popped along from their offices when prince Harry was in Washington? They were all dressed to kill in a selection of cocktail dresses with little cardigans over the top to try to tone it down a bit. Made me Grin (and reminded me of the time in my old job when one of the former members of bros -who now has a boring sensible corporate job - was due to visit our offices, there was a notable increase in outfit effort put in by a few former brosettes amongst the pa's, who all suddenly needed to be in reception around the time he was due to visit)

Op, were you expecting a visit from a highly eligible bachelor in the office today???

GildedWingsOfGrace · 11/09/2013 18:48

yabu & sound jealous tbh

Confused

How do I sound jealous? I said she looks like she puts effort into what she wears and her hair is always nicely styled and so does her makeup. I wish I had the energy to bother.

Just thought that type of dress was rather OTT for the office - an office in the middle of no where surrounded by places like B&Q, Wickes etc.

I'd rather see someone done up than scruffy. If I had the figure for tight satin I'd wear it all the time!

Purplehonesty · 11/09/2013 18:50

Totally OTT.

GildedWingsOfGrace · 11/09/2013 18:51

And I'm quite concerned about the time you must have spent googling to find a copy online.

Yes because typing in blue silky cocktail dress into google images took me a lifetime.

I spent hours researching and scrolling through each page. This actually happened last week and I have only just now found a good enough image to post.

Or rather it took all of seconds Confused

Wow... Judgejudithjudy, was that you in this dress today??

Kidsarekarma · 11/09/2013 18:53

Grin Euphemia

Don't really understand the flaming you're getting, OP. I completely agree that it's not office appropriate. I'm even surprised at the people who say they would wear something like this if they were going out after work. Surely you bring a change of clothes rather than dressing like you're in a nightclub when you're in the office?!

Lovely dress i dont see anything wrong with being overdressed in any place she sounds lovely

LeGavrOrf · 11/09/2013 19:13

It's completely inappropriate.

God knows why anyone thinks you sound jealous. I wouldn't be jealous of anyone wearing a hideous dress like that tbh.

Lots of entry level admin types wear that in our officeson dress down Friday.

I always used to say when I worked in the City in the 80s if you want to be taken out on a date, dress like you want to go on a date! But, being the 80s it was like this but with a mini skirt as well Grin

Mandy2003 · 11/09/2013 19:21

Oh, link fail - 3rd one along Grin

mrspaddy · 11/09/2013 19:22

Oh goodness me... absolutely not office wear at all..

But whatever floats her boat!!

Feminine · 11/09/2013 19:22

The dress looks cheap.

YANBU.

I don't care how nice then rest of her looks, the dress will make her look like a Quality Street.

The coconut one. circa early '90's ?

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 11/09/2013 19:24

Whatever length of time it took you on Google images was too long!

It's not healthy obsessing over other people and their clothes!

LeGavrOrf · 11/09/2013 19:25

How is she obsessing? Grin she is just starting a thread on here to chat about it.

GildedWingsOfGrace · 11/09/2013 19:29

No it's ok LeGavrOrf I am obsessing.

I secretly took photos of her on my phone and then spent hours trying to find the dress. I have now bought it so I can now wear it too.

It's been on my mind since I saw her - I almost crashed into the back of another car driving home because I was thinking about her and the dress.

Grin

MissBeehiving · 11/09/2013 19:36

Oh, I think it's a bit odd. My CEX wears dresses like that to the office ALL THE TIME, including a red satin number which is a little bit, er unconventional and a nude colour one with a mesh top. She does go to the other extreme though and wore a white denim suit the other week. She is an absolute grade A bitch though, so I do have a quiet snigger at the inappropriateness.

Wuxiapian · 11/09/2013 19:40

YANBU, Gilded.

That is not day time office wear - or at least, it shouldn't be.
