AIBU?

To think my neighbour is a snob, and a very strange one at that?

My car is in the garage today for a service so told dd this morning she would have to walk home, not a problem she does this most days anyway. Sat earlier and I see my neighbour driving into our street and dd is in the car so I go to the door to check everything is ok and this is the conversation that followed

Me- "hi, everything ok"

Neighbour- "yes fine, dd just wanted a lift home in a BMW today Grin"

Me- "sorry?"

Neighbour- "yes, since you were not there at pick up dd thought it would be nice to get a lift in a BMW"

Me- "dd, did you want a lift in a BMW?"

Dd- "what's a BMW"

Neighbour- "aahhhh come on now dd, it must have been nice sitting in a BMW?"

Dd- (looking totally confused) "yes, thanks for the lift home"

Me- "thanks for that"

Then she smiled and walked off.

Was lovely that she offered dd a lift as it was starting to spit rain but was this really such a treat.

To put it into context a bit my car is average but only six month old, the BMW in question is very old (nothing wrong with that my last car was old) but I feel I'm missing something by neighbours attitude.

"Shit myself with envy" Grin

Do you think I should go ask for a shot inside the BMW then do exactly that?

Some idiots- people just can't help themselves.

I know someone who is actually quite a nice person at heart, but is incapable of referring to her DH as anything other than "my husband, the Colonel".
In full. Every single time.

I was always stumped, but can finally hold up my end of the conversation because I now have "my ex-husband, the arsehole" Grin

I call my car The Royal Chariot. With capital letters, like that.

It is a 3rd hand Yaris with a paint job which I may have slightly touched fucked up myself, but I have my pride.

I am now going to walk over the hardwood flooring into the kitchen, take the Taste the Difference salmon out of the Bosch and cook before my husband gets home in his company car.

"What's a BMW?" hahahaaaaaa

I remember my best mate once had this twatty older BF. She asked me what I thought of his car when he was driving us somewhere and I politely said something about liking Escorts (even though I actually thought the car was ugly and noisy!). He was furious... I got a big lecture about it being a vay expensive, superfast Subaru, the best car on the planet. Hmm

Off topic but how does your dd not know what a BMW is?

She's 10, Stephen! There's loads of random stuff she just won't have heard of yet.

Gruntfuttock · 10/09/2013 18:49

I wouldn't have known when I was 10. I had zero interest in cars then and I'm still the same now.

it's a pretty popular car with lots of advertising all over the place and a very unique brand name- just wondering how it had escaped her what a BMW was.

Some people feel defined by their cars, same as others by their jobs, or where they live.
I expect they thought they were offering a big treat.
I'm not sure it's snobbish, just a bit sad.

This thread is making me Grin. I have a friend who is changing her car this week. She's moving from "the Discovery" into a small VW runaround. Her adult (40) daughter is "naturally disappointed" but her adult (42) son has "been ok about it, he's always supportive". Hmm

This friend also refers to her BBQ as "the Weber", the vacuum cleaner as "the Dyson", her wellies as "my Hunters" etc etc.

Years ago i knew a family whose DCs referred to their cars by their number - Daddy had a big Merc and Mummy a smaller one, so one of them was "the 190" and the other was whatever it was iyswim.

I love people who use brands to define themselves, hours of entertainment Grin.

Dad used to have a Beemer! It was Y reg from the first time around (he bought it at the mart in about 1991), probably cost him about £100 and was snot green. He was so proud of it - it was either the Beemer or the Beast, depending on how fast he was driving at the time.

Hmm mrsjay, no.

why do people do that? someone posts something that doesn't 100% agree (note i have neither agreed nor disagreed with OP) with an OP and somehow that makes them the other party. odd logic considering how many people use MN compared to how many people actually exist in the world.

BMW is a big brand is all i'm saying. it's hard not to notice them, they're all over the fucking place, on billboards, tv, cinemas etc. it would be different if the car in question had been a Bentley (just taking an example from upthread) because they just aren't about in the same way as BMW are.

This will probably out me but a relative of mine bought a little red Corvette whilst in the midst of a mid life crisis, decided to 'treat' my mum to a spin then promptly took her round the neighbourhood whilst blasting out little red corvette by Prince Grin
She still cringes when I bring it up.

I just said I didnt think a 10 year old would know what a BMW car is not all children really know these things and I was kidding about the neighbour, to some people cars are just that cars that get them around to school or whatever and it is a good thing brands are not stuck in a 10 year olds head they can go about being a 10 year old

Report
SleepyFish · 10/09/2013 19:34

You do seem unreasonably affronted about a 10year old not knowing what a BMW is Stephen. It was tongue in cheek is all.
