AIBU?

To think my neighbour is a snob, and a very strange one at that?

My car is in the garage today for a service so told dd this morning she would have to walk home, not a problem she does this most days anyway. Sat earlier and I see my neighbour driving into our street and dd is in the car so I go to the door to check everything is ok and this is the conversation that followed

Me- "hi, everything ok"

Neighbour- "yes fine, dd just wanted a lift home in a BMW today Grin"

Me- "sorry?"

Neighbour- "yes, since you were not there at pick up dd thought it would be nice to get a lift in a BMW"

Me- "dd, did you want a lift in a BMW?"

Dd- "what's a BMW"

Neighbour- "aahhhh come on now dd, it must have been nice sitting in a BMW?"

Dd- (looking totally confused) "yes, thanks for the lift home"

Me- "thanks for that"

Then she smiled and walked off.

Was lovely that she offered dd a lift as it was starting to spit rain but was this really such a treat.

To put it into context a bit my car is average but only six month old, the BMW in question is very old (nothing wrong with that my last car was old) but I feel I'm missing something by neighbours attitude.

Grin at What's a BMW.

What car do you have OP?

snort mrsjay I also know someone who only ever refers to "the jag" and not "the car".

the fact that he leases it, as he has no job, house or savings is irrelevant Grin

I remember an old school friend whose family got a BMW. It was no longer possible for them to go anywhere in 'the car', it was always in 'the BMW'. If anyone left the house it was necessary for other family members to establish whether they were taking the BMW.

Perhaps it is a requirement?

There is also the subset who refer to "the Beamer".

usually its a way of making sure people realise you have several cars (one for the nanny, obv, and then one each)

Years ago an old boss of mine bought a second hand BMW. Every conversation with every customer started "So what car are you driving. I have a BMW 5 series".

I had to conceal a smirk when the thing started to rust very badly.

I haven't heard anyone use the 'Beamer' since about 1990

I'd be chuffed to bits assuming I knew the neighbours well it was a nice gesture. I don't think she was being snobby just proud of her car wonder if she's got a name for it some folks name their cars don't they lool

See, that is funny and i would not have batted an eye at it. We call our car 'The Nissan'. As in 'Come on DC, we are going in The Nissan'. It is because DS is obsessed with car makes. When he tantrums (he is 3 I might add) the only thing that gets us out of Morrison's fairly quickly is 'Come on, let's go in The Nissan'.

I don't think that sounds particularly strange, but maybe it is. [double thinks everything I have said or done lately]

Oh for goodness sake, I can't abide all this snobbishness, I'm off to Miele the carpets and then load the Bosch with the dirty dishes.

XBenedict, Oh dear, is it your cleaner's day off?

(specially hates people who refer to "my cleaner" as if "my dog", people who work in your house have NAMES ffs).

It gets weirder!

Dh has just phoned to ask if dd enjoyed her lift in the BMW today!

I'm going "eh?!?!, how the hell do you know" and he says the husband had seen him at work and told him about dd's ride "in the BMW"

Either I have slipped further into that weird universe or dh is checking up on my mumsnet posts!

He was as confused as I was though!

Yes but what if other people don;t know the name of your cleaner, beast. Would you say 'Oh sarah is coming on friday' and leave your audience wondering who Sarah was?

[I don't trust people with clean cars either.]

OP, okay, yes your neighbors are weird. I think that is pretty weird.

Report
Pagwatch · 10/09/2013 16:53

I called my first car Hamish. That was probably weird.

We call the cars something to each other because we swop them. But I call it 'the car' if I am talking to someone else.

So the wife rang her DH at work to convey this life-changing news? isnt her Dh busy, then? I can just see my DH if I rang him up about who got into what car when...

And then, even if DH's colleague had told him at work, why would he assume you should care?

Truly odd. Wonder why she is so proud of a car, its a bit sad really.
