I don't trust people who don't have any books in their houses.

I think they are a bit evil.

My sister and her DH only have a couple of Jamie Oliver books and THAT'S IT. Freaks.

I get a bit twitchy if I visit someone and I can't see their bookshelf, I have been known to snoop on the pretext of finding the loo or something to put my mind at rest.

I think it shows trerrible character and possibly criminal leanings to not have hundreds some books around the house.

AIBU? I know i'm not really, it's just common sense.

yes but books are a bit crap these days aren't they?
i was thinking of making my dog eared tomes into a garden shed, it is about all they are good for.
it could be an 'installation' to comment on post post modernism?
or something.
Like Rachel Whiteread's house type of thing?

TediousFool · 09/09/2013 10:30

I have lots of books, they're not dusty because I erm dust them. Except for DH's Jeremy fucking Clarkson ones which I hope will soon become so ingrained with grime and dust that I can no longer see his smug gurning face on the spines.

chocolateicecream · 09/09/2013 11:05

I love books. They smell great. I have a 'coffee table book' obsession.

chocolateicecream · 09/09/2013 11:06

and you can't press your flowers in a kindle.

VaultFullOfTwizzlers · 09/09/2013 11:08

Kindles don't try out as easily following immersion in bathwater.

Books do smell lovely and improve with age. I always inhale deeply in second-hand bookshops. Waterstones not so much.

VaultFullOfTwizzlers · 09/09/2013 11:09

dry out.

flipchart · 09/09/2013 11:10

and you can't press your flowers in a kindle.

I've never pressed a flower in my life unless I've accidentally sat on one!

ShadowSummer · 09/09/2013 11:10

But kindles are fantastic for when you're away on holiday and have very limited packing space.

Sallystyle · 09/09/2013 11:12

There are books everywhere in my house.

I have a shelf in my living room, in my kitchen and we all have one in our bedrooms.

No books makes me Shock

ShadowSummer · 09/09/2013 11:15

and you can't press your flowers in a kindle.

I actually got given a proper flower press for Christmas a few years back goodness only knows why as I've never shown any interest in collecting squashed flowers so I know that you don't really need to keep heavy books around just for flower pressing.

grumpyoldbat · 09/09/2013 11:16

But samu there are lots of reasons why people don't own loads of books. It doesn't necessarily mean they don't read them or don't like them.

HSMMaCM · 09/09/2013 11:21

My books are in a cupboard, because I had a massive clear out and I now use the library. I pick books up from charity ships to take on holiday and leave them there.

Well I think the OP has a point.

I am sure that at least 50% of criminal households are criminal due to a criminal lack of books.

People who only use Libraries are just scrabbling in the shadow of the clothes of actual book owners. A bit like wearing knock-off clothing. You may try to appear to be a book owner, but deep down you know you are just not as good as you should be. As for e-reader owners, Library users are just haging onto their coat-tails and dreaming of Amazon Whispernet.

I bet that if you evil non-book owning, library using people DID buy a book, it would be misery porn.

Hmm Grin

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 09/09/2013 11:26

You would love me OP, I have hundreds of books.

Seeing people on kindles makes me sad (well, not really but you know what I mean). There is nothing like flicking through a book, sniffing the paper - I understand kindles are good for travelling but apart from that.........

ClockWatchingLady · 09/09/2013 11:28

Yes, absolutely. I like to disguise my fuck-off-enormous TV behind many (unread) volumes of Nietzsche and Hume. This is the main thing preventing me from becoming a mass murderer.

teenagetantrums · 09/09/2013 11:45

I have no books, had 100's and got rid of the all. I was sick of dusting them, and the space they took up. was very liberating, I use the library and have a kindle. The teenagers have some, but the oldest has a kindle as well. I used to be the same thinking it was weird if people didn't have books, am over that now, just think books are a bit obsolete for adults, good for children though.

grumpyoldbat · 09/09/2013 12:29

keema that's incredibly nasty. FYI I'm well aware I'm a scummy little shit but if you like I'll add evil to my list of sins.

Interesting that if I bought TV I'd be irresponsible but refuse to spend the money pegged for food and dc's clothes in books and I'm evil. Well that's my lesson learned no point in trying once scum always scum eh?

WayHarshTai · 09/09/2013 12:32

Oh Grumpy you are a caution.
