We broke the cat's bowl recently so DCat has been eating out of one of ds' melamine bowls. Today I bought a new cat bowl so I rinsed ds' bowl and was going to put it in the dishwasher and run the hottest cycle.

DH has had a squeamish meltdown and thinks we should just throw it away. He can't see how it won't still have "cat germs". I even offered to sterilise it in the old steriliser we haven't yet put away [slacker emoticon].

Dh insists I get mn advice. He is convinced you will all agree with him. I, of course, think you are all more rational Grin

So, who IBU?

Christ, I love my pussy but I bet my husband wouldn't want to go near somewhere my puss has been.

RubyGoat · 08/09/2013 22:08

After you've been to the toilet or changed a nappy, what does he think happens about the germs on your hands? You can't exactly throw them away...

YANBU

lol at NombreChanger's post! (sorry dirty mind / too much wine)

Erm...you wash your hands?

giraffescantdanceallnight · 08/09/2013 22:11

Yanbu

PeazlyPops · 08/09/2013 22:13

I'm with your husband on this.

RubyGoat · 08/09/2013 22:14

Yes, obviously, AmberLeaf. Which is precisely what the OP proposes to do with the bowl. However that's not good enough for her DH. That was my point. If washing isn't enough, what is?

TheYoniWayIsUp · 08/09/2013 22:16

Melamine. I like that word. Melamine.

(My brain doesn't like it written down and is now saying me-la-min-ee inside my head.

AmberLeaf · 08/09/2013 22:16

I am an animal lover [cats anyway] but do people really not see the difference between humans and animals?

I think feeding your child and your pet from the same plate is rank.

Even if it is a mind thing, how can you place your child on the same level as an animal?

Topseyt · 08/09/2013 22:17

He is being daft. Dishwashers wash and rinse so hot that they virtually sterilise everything in them anyway. That is part of the purpose of a dishwasher.

For the record, I regularly wash my pet food bowls in the dishwasher along with the family plates and bowls. I always have for years, and none of us has pegged it yet.

If I wanted to throw away every piece of crockery my cat or my two dogs had ever licked I wouldn't have much left by now anyway.

Jan49 · 08/09/2013 22:18

If washing isn't enough, what is?

Having used the item for the cat, you keep it as a spare for the cat's food or just continue to use it for the cat's food. I once looked after someone's cat at my house. The owner forgot to bring the bowl. So I used one of mine for the whole of its stay. Then I put it away with the cat's stuff for future visits and never used it for humans again.

RubyGoat · 08/09/2013 22:19

Additionally, you couldn't possibly wash your hands in water as hot as a dishwasher - you'd be seriously scalded. Therefore, unless we're supposed to use bleach on our hands after every toilet/nappy change, it doesn't even compare - a dishwasher is probably able to get dishes cleaner/more reliably sterile than most people would when washing their hands.

FatimaLovesBread · 08/09/2013 22:19

Dish washer temperature is plenty hot enough to kill the majority of germs. As would the detergent in the dishwasher tablets.

FannyBazaar · 08/09/2013 22:23

Your poor cat, imagine having to live in a household where bowls you have eaten from should be thrown out rather than used by someone else in the family...

EndoplasmicReticulum · 08/09/2013 22:51

Ratlady - oddly although I wouldn't eat out of the cat bowl I used to share meals with a flatmate's rat sometimes, it would do a very cute thing with spaghetti.

Pet rats, not sewer ones.

I will also happily share crockery with guinea pigs.

Or you could just keep that bowl as a spare for the cat.

Your husband is neurotic.

Oh, and cat is currently on the bed giving himself a good all over cleaning (if you know what I mean...Wink) and will probably spend the rat of the night curled up on dh's feet!

I'm with your DH. Too yucky for me. But then again I have a separate washing machine for the dogs blankets and towels.

marcopront · 09/09/2013 04:02

A question for those of you who would throw it away.

If you became ill after eating an item of food, would you throw away the plate and cutlery you used, as surely they have germs on them?

raisah · 09/09/2013 07:23

I am with your dh on this on.
