We broke the cat's bowl recently so DCat has been eating out of one of ds' melamine bowls. Today I bought a new cat bowl so I rinsed ds' bowl and was going to put it in the dishwasher and run the hottest cycle.

DH has had a squeamish meltdown and thinks we should just throw it away. He can't see how it won't still have "cat germs". I even offered to sterilise it in the old steriliser we haven't yet put away [slacker emoticon].

Dh insists I get mn advice. He is convinced you will all agree with him. I, of course, think you are all more rational Grin

So, who IBU?

DH-IBU. I take it that he doesn't stroke the cat then maybe itch a scratch on his head? After all, cats lick their bums then their fur...

Does he follow the 10second rule on food?

microserf · 08/09/2013 19:13

My in laws put the serving platters down on the floor for their dog to finish off what's left.

I had to harden up quite considerably for family dinners...

The cat also drinks out of the water jug on the table and no one bats an eye. On plus side dh has the most awesome immune system.

thisisyesterday · 08/09/2013 19:15

your dh is being unreasonable. it's only food and it's going to get washed. of course it's ok

Greydog · 08/09/2013 19:18

Just wash the bloody dish. Is you DH scrupulous in washing hus hands after gardening/pet handling/using the toilet? Because an awful lot of people aren't

Dobbiesmum · 08/09/2013 19:22

MIL used to be the same until she found our then toddler DD1 sharing the cat nibbles in a 'one for you two for me type of way'. The cat was sitting on DD's knee and licking snot off her nose in between nibbles. After an initial meltdown she decided that the cat was more likely to get germs...
Your D is way too squeamish and needs many many grips.

SoThisIsHowYouNameChange · 08/09/2013 19:24

I opened this thread in hopes of finding out what possible song request might make a dj squeamish. Grin

Dobbiesmum · 08/09/2013 19:26

Angels and Lady in Red apparently Sothisis, makes the one I know feel slightly queasy if he gets asked for it... Grin

BubaMarra · 08/09/2013 19:33

Dishwashers usually go up to 70 degrees C, so loads of germs would go unaffected by the wash. They would actually just be spread around the dishwasher.
I am totally with your DH.

Fairylea · 08/09/2013 19:37

I'm with your dh. Sorry!

My mum lets her dogs drink the last dregs of her tea from her mugs and even though she uses a dishwasherI am unable to drink tea at hers anymore. Bluerrggggggh.

ElphabaTheGreen · 08/09/2013 19:46

DH and way too many on this thread are a touch uptight. Top drawer wash in the dishwasher is as good as sterilising. You're more likely to get diseases from the plates that have had human saliva on them.

Says she, who lets the dogs lick all the plates after meals because it means we don't have to rinse them before they go in the dishwasher.

thisisyesterday · 08/09/2013 19:48

actually i believe dishwashers normally get a lot hotter than 70 degrees.
imagine the food poisoning people would get if germs weren't getting killed?

plus, it isn't just hot water is it? you've got detergents in there that will kill stuff off too

BrandiBroke · 08/09/2013 19:48

Hahaha, I often put bowls and plates on the floor after ive finished dinner for my cats to lick. I do wash them in hot water with washing up liquid but we don't have a dishwasher! I've never considered not eating from them again! Perhaps I better not tell people in real life I do this or else they might never want to come over again!

Rubberstamp · 08/09/2013 19:50

Oh dear, I use the same plastic plates for the children and pets. Obviously washed in between. So obviously I'm with you.

Polyethyl · 08/09/2013 19:58

I agree with you. Once washed the bowl will be fine for use. Just as clean if not more so than dozens of other things in your home.

Does your husband sterilise door handles and light switches? The kitchen bin's lid?

Smile and nod at your DH then get on with using your bowl. (And send your DH out to make mud pies with your DS.)

Turniptwirl · 08/09/2013 21:19

It's fine after a thorough washing

I agree with pp who said if you throw that out then you might as well throw out anything that's touched raw meat or fish etc

CinnabarRed · 08/09/2013 21:23

I'm of the view that the bowl has been improved by the cat eating from it. In our house the DSs would now be fighting over who gets to have it next. But I would win...

BonaDea · 08/09/2013 21:24

Yanbu.

We have special spoons for dishing up cat food but I just use teaspoons!

tiggerpigger · 08/09/2013 21:49

Im on your side. Often use human bowls for the cat then put them in the dishwasher. No problems.

LovesBeingOnHoliday · 08/09/2013 21:51

Serve his dinner up in it

AKissIsNotAContract · 08/09/2013 21:53

I'm with your DH. If you think it's ok then you eat out of it.

Isabelonatricycle · 08/09/2013 22:01

Madness. It'll be absolutely fine. Tell him not to be such an idiot.

ZacharyQuack · 08/09/2013 22:01

Doesn't your cat ever lick your DH's face? Or does it not love him enough? Sad

Nombrechanger · 08/09/2013 22:03

I'm with your DH. That's absolutely disgusting.

Madratlady · 08/09/2013 22:05

My DM is horrified that I occasionally let my rats eat off plates that I then wash and use, or give them spoons to lick (they love yoghurt).

ExitPursuedByADragon · 08/09/2013 22:07

Bin it.
