AIBU?

Girls' and boys' yogurts from Muller - AIBU to be a bit WTF??

Here they are - the product you never knew you needed. I sort of understand how toys have become sexually stereotyped but food products. Really? It's utterly ridiculous. Isn't it? Or should I only be feeding my daughter yogurts suitable for a girl? All these years she has been making do with unisex yogurt. I feel I have let her down.

According to Muller, boys like monkeys, space, pirates and cars, and girls like flowers, popstars, superstars and fashion - and it's only right that these interests are reflected in the dairy products they consume. My DD likes climbing trees, I am confused about which yogurt I should choose.

They're just saying blue for adventure, pink for glamour.

Given the very strong blue for boys and pink for girls conditioning that's all around us every day, it's not quite as simple as that, is it?

It's also not quite as simple as saying 'look how society is conditioning my child' without taking ultimate responsibility for it yourself.

I've never stopped my DDs liking pink, playing with Barbies, loving Disney Princesses etc. They also know, however, that I have an equal relationship with DH, because they can see it. They may like to put a hairband in their hair for school, but they know that their opinion and ideas matter every bit as much as their male counterparts.

Am I missing something?

Saw these in the Co op today. DD rolled her eyes. I've taught her well Wink.

My 7yo said WTAF when she saw this [glows with feminist maternal pride].

They don't need to label them boys' and girls' yogurts - all of us, including small children, know what pink and blue signifies. It's ludicrous to pretend that Muller isn't completely intending to send this message.

x-post, Pixel Grin. dd has also taken to pointing out how few princesses and fairies have dark hair and brown skin. Why oh why don't I live in Hackney or Brighton?

Pixel you haven't though have you? Because they might taste really nice.

Dear toy manufacturers, clothing retailers & now food processors,

I am writing to let you know that there are, in fact 7 colours in the rainbow. And a gazillion shades thereof.

Perhaps, armed with this knowledge, when I go to buy my 6 month old baby a denta-chew toothbrush thingummy, you will have realised that I don't really want to choose between a pink one or a blue one, for a baby, & you will have taken the high risk strategy of using other colours. Ditto every fucking other thing you sell to children.

That is all.

Yours sincerely,

In desperate need of a GSOH.

I bought these when they first came out. I have 2 football mad DS's so assumed they'd like the football ones.

They prefer the pink hearts one 'cos they taste better.
They didn't give a toss about then being pink.

YABU just don't buy them. The majority of food aimed at children is crap lacking in nutrition. There are more shocking things for sale in supermarkets than gender stereotyped dairy products.

Isn't it just Tesco calling them "Girls' yoghurt" ?

Why have the boys got all the fun interesting themes while the girls have crap shallow stuff

Report
Retroformica · 06/09/2013 06:24

It's such a load of nestle bull!

Why couldn't they just have unisex yogurts with fun themes and not the superficial (and now pink) fame/fashion etc

I'm going to design my own 'pink' yogurts based on my SD's interests

A four pack would contain ...
Book theme yogurt
Tree climbing theme yogurt
A cat themed yogurt (could contain bits of real cat hair)
Cycling themed yogurt

Retroformica · 06/09/2013 06:31

Why can't the 'blue adventurous' yogurts have the theme fame/fashion etc. Boys yogurt could have a trainer or something (and be cheese flavour maybe)

It was Tesco who added the description and really how's it different to having yogurts with characters aimed at males and females? I wouldn't buy them but that's because they are full of crap.

Here are the ingredients:
Ingredients

Yogurt, Sugar, Water, Whey Powder, Vegetable Fat, Modified Starch, Wheat Flour, Rice Flour, Cocoa Butter, Flavourings, Whole Milk Powder, Emulsifiers: Soya Lecithins, E471, Barley Malt Extract, Glazing Agent: Gum Arabic, Colours: Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxide, Vegetable Oil, Salt, Cereal Football Shapes (10%)

This should be the concern. Why our food manufacturers are targeting our children for crap laden food?

Depressing, but your OP is hilarious - your poor DD having to make do with unisex yogurt [sadface].

Given that Muller haven't actually specified which yoghurts are for which gender, I don't think it's an enormous deal. Unnecessary, yes, but outrageous, no.

Of course it would've been nicer to choose less gender-loaded colours and themes, but it's not that much different to character foodstuffs, and those have been around since I was little!

It's just yoghurt (or something that looks like yoghurt judging by the ingredients). The children don't even notice/care. Perhaps there is a massive amount of overthinking going on.

Report
MardyBra · 06/09/2013 07:50

I don't think there is "over thinking" going on sparkling. Muller's marketing dept will have spent hours going over this proposition. Basically what they want to do is produce boy and girl yoghurts but they don't want to upset the harridans of MN be accused of being sexist. So they've labelled them pink and blue like every other fucking manufacturer, conformed to all the gender stereotypes and probably sold them into the retailers on a gender bias basis. nice try Muller, but you ain't fooling the harridans of MN us.
