Argh Mooncup woes!

twosmallbuttons · 05/09/2013 08:41

This is the 4th or 5th month I've tried to get on with my new mooncup. I really have. It doesn't seem to like me at all Confused

I can't be bothered trying any more, it's ridiculous. I thought it would revolutionise my whole life but I've been let down by the MN hype

AIBU to give up? Anyone else had similarly rubbish experience with it?

Me too transformed my life. It's all about getting the suction right. Let us know how you go

bicyclepath · 05/09/2013 10:39

That's good advice about doing pelvic floor squeezes after insertion - to make sure it unfolds itself properly. I have occasional leaks with mine but I suspect they only happen when I've kind of shoved it in without due care and attention. Still love it.

mrsjay · 05/09/2013 10:44

oh just get rid of it having your period is miserable and messy enough without faffing about with a contraption that isn't suiting you, why did you buy it for what reason ?

twosmallbuttons · 05/09/2013 12:21

Thanks for the comments & advice. I'm not squeamish about it, and certainly don't have any problem getting it out...it comes out a bit too easily in fact, such as when I tried to do a number 2 with it in last month BlushBlush

Sigh

Maybe I'll try again, with less ranting and cursing Grin

If out comes out too easily is that because you aren't twisting it?

SHarri13 · 05/09/2013 12:43

I have one but think it's a fleur cup. I had the worst thrush I have ever had in my life when using it so I just can't bear ever trying one again.

juneybean · 05/09/2013 12:45

It was a meluna I tried and it leaked, tried two different sizes as well. Have since off-loaded one to a fellow mumsnetter.

Nancy66 · 05/09/2013 12:48

I agree. Tried one too. Messy, ineffective, unhygienic.

Tampons work so why change?

valiumredhead · 05/09/2013 12:52

How on earth is any San pro 'unhygienic'Confused period blood isn't dirty.

Nancy66 · 05/09/2013 12:55

If I remove a tampon I can pull it out, not come into contact with the blood and flush it away.

You can't do that with a mooncup. You also can't really use it conveniently in public loos or in the workplace unless you don't mind washing it out at the sink in front of others.

valiumredhead · 05/09/2013 13:02

I don't come into any contact with blood using my moon cup.

I would rinse it out using a bottle of water, never in a sink in public loos-not that I ever need to as I only need to empty out morning and evening.

If you don't like them fine, but there is nothing unhygienic about moon cups and compared to tampons they are far better for you health wise.

ILikeBirds · 05/09/2013 13:03

I can do all that with a mooncup. Removal doesn't involve getting blood on your hands. No rinsing required so public toilets not a problem.

unlucky83 · 05/09/2013 13:08

Love my mooncup - don't even think about it anymore - took a while to get used to ...but now wouldn't be without it ...
A bit Hmm about worries about blood on your hands, not being hygienic etc
I don't get blood on my hands ...and don't think I'd be particularly worried if I did...

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 05/09/2013 13:10

Why would anyone use something as revolting as a Moon Cup. Tampons have caused me no health problems, and I used them for 40 odd years. As will my daughter

twosmallbuttons · 05/09/2013 13:12

Hmm well I seem to get a bloody hand when inserting it, perhaps I have a heavier flow than others. The one or two times it's not leaked, I had to empty after a couple of hours.

I put it as far up as I can feel with my hand but it slips down quickly. I do the twisty thing and run my finger round it. It's the large size too Confused

Nancy66 · 05/09/2013 13:14

I think removing it, emptying it and then putting the same manky thing back in without cleaning it is a bit gross but each to their own.

FetchezLaVache · 05/09/2013 13:14

You don't need to wash it out every time, you can just empty the blood down the loo and put it back in if using public loos. I don't even empty mine very often, just morning and night like VRH (but then I don't have particularly heavy periods). I think its advantages over tampons (specifically- super-comfortable, requires little attention, not having to worry about how to dispose of a used tampon at friends' houses, the environment, not having the sensation of a pissy tampon string in your knickers when you go for a wee) far outweigh any disadvantages in terms of squeamishness, tbh, but each to their own.

valiumredhead · 05/09/2013 13:14

Why would you use something as revolting as wadded up bleached cotton, which has a risk of TS? Also increases the risk of thrush/irritation.

Your daughter might choose to use a moon cup, she can make her own mind up surely?

FetchezLaVache · 05/09/2013 13:15

amothersplaceisinthewrong, don't you think it's going a bit far to dictate your daughter's sanitary protection choices to her??

MinesAPintOfTea · 05/09/2013 13:27

Mine always comes right down when I do a number two: its because you're bearing down like giving birth I remove it first now.

As for bloody hands: I have to put it in in the shower in the morning (don't like wearing it overnight) because of the amount of blood involved. But once the lower down blood has been washed away its fairly clean for the rest of the day.

In public loos I give it a good wipe with loo roll before replacing and wash it well when I get home.

Faerieinatoadstool · 05/09/2013 13:45

How long since you had your dc? It can take a few months for your body to get back to normal. If it's been a while then you need to do some pelvic floor exercises to tighten things up. They are brill once you get sorted

BlingBang · 05/09/2013 14:46

How do you not get blood on your hands. I had it splatter onto my blouse, lush.

valiumredhead · 05/09/2013 14:57

I just don't, never have not sure what you're doing to make it so messyGrin

twosmallbuttons · 05/09/2013 15:53

Well DC2 is almost 16 months so things should've gone back to normal a bit by now Confused
More exercises needed then Grin

I love the idea of the mooncup but so far it's a gigantic PITA. Or PITV that should be Wink (except not a pain) Confused Blush

It's not supposed to go very far up, if you push it too high, it will come down lower as it settles into position. If you still have the leaflet I think there is a diagram of mooncup position vs tampon position. I normally get a little bit of blood on my fingers but not very much at all, but then I don't push it up as far as I can reach if that makes sense.

Have you cut the stem off? It will feel uncomfortable if it's low down and the stem sticks out. Without the stem it should be comfortable very low down.

I do take mine out to do a poo as well! It's never slipped out but I'm always paranoid that it will so remove just in case!
