To always cry at the Emma Thompson bits in Love Actually?

Against my will, I've been forced to watch LA this evening. I find this film to be cheesy and irritating..apart from her part.

The bit where she is standing in her room after discovering that her husband has another woman. OMG. Wonderful film making.

It is a good 30 - 40 seconds of watching a woman do nothing, and yet it so beautifully charged with emotion. She blinks back her tears so her children don't see her cry. She goes to straighten the duvet as if it is a reflex action.

Then later on she tells Alan Rickman he has made "the life I lead seem foolish too". So lovely, so dignified. I also like the fact he doesn't get as far as having a physical affair, but that doesn't matter. The damage is done.

Gives me goosebumps.

yes she totally out herself last behing her dhs career and her children's needs... definatly the bitch deserved to be cheated on? really?

complexnumber · 30/08/2013 12:34

Fanny, I agree Bill Nighy & his manager were wonderful - best bit in the film & most touching relationship

Totally agree, I thought Bill Nighy pretty much stole every scene he was in.

littlemog · 30/08/2013 12:38

If only in RL she'd been less of a frump

I have tried to work out what you mean by this MrsCB - but can't.

Binkyridesagain · 30/08/2013 12:43

Well based on some of the responses on here its only a matter of time before my DH accidentally falls into someone else's vagina. But then again, because he's a decent human being who loves me despite my 'failings', he won't.

Bogeyface · 30/08/2013 12:44

When talking to "Ant or Dec" "Kids, dont buy drugs............become a rock star and you get them for FREE!!:o

MrsCampbellBlack · 30/08/2013 12:53

Littlemog - I was being sarcastic as to perhaps that's why Kenneth B cheated on her allegedly.

Just find blaming a woman for being a devoted mum and not at the cutting edge of fashion a bit off.

anonacfr · 30/08/2013 12:55

Bill Nighy was awesome.

I can't believe no- one mentioned Colin Firth's AWFUL 'comedy' Portuguese proposal. Let's not forget the obligatory fat hairy Portuguese sister. Classy.

Wibblypiglikesbananas · 30/08/2013 12:56

YANBU! It made me cry before marriage and children, so kills me every time now. Also the airport reunion scenes - having worked at Heathrow, there's many a time I had to nip into Boots or WH Smith to stare at the wall and compose myself. It's the grandparents that get me - kids and grandkids off to Aus, not sure if they'll see each other again. Blub.

Can you believe it is ten years since that film was released?! Ten whole years?! And I still don't think there's been a better Christmassy film released since. Perhaps The Holiday, but even that was 2006.

Looking forward to seeing ET in the new Mary Poppins film with Tom Hanks, should be good.

bibliomania · 30/08/2013 12:58

Bill Nighy and manager undoubtedly the best bit.

I like the ET scene, but mainly because of the Joni Mitchell song.

Laura Linney bit also great.

It's really only the irritating drum-boy and the awful dash through the airport (beyond a cliche) that really lets it down. I quite like Martin Freeman's and even KK's bit.

Not a bad film if you have the fastforward button handy.

I loved it when Hugh Grant started carol singing and told his police guard to join in. Out comes this wonderful Welsh baritone. Hugh's expression was either real or the best piece of acting he's ever done.

loopyloou · 30/08/2013 13:08

YANBU - I have goosebumps just thinking about the scene in the bedroom with Joni Mitchell playing in the background. One of my fave films anyway, I always cry at intervals through it.

loopyloou · 30/08/2013 13:11

Ooh there's going to be a new Mary Poppins film with ET? (zooms off to IMDB...)

Wibblypiglikesbananas · 30/08/2013 13:22

Loopy - it's called Saving Mr Banks. Saw the trailer a couple of weeks back, but I'm in the US so it may be out here before the UK.

Parmarella · 30/08/2013 14:50

Ouch at all the misogynist shite... From women..

littlemog · 30/08/2013 15:07

Yep - grim isn't it?

littlemog · 30/08/2013 15:08

I agree with you MrsCB.

iamamug · 30/08/2013 16:43

I am not ashamed to admit this is my favourite film and I have always raved about ET's poignant scene - I bought a Joni Mitchell CD on the back of it.
I watched it at the cinema not long after the death of my best friend who was only 40. When they played 'Bye Bye Baby' at the funeral scene, it was all over for me for the rest of the film. Best blubfest ever.

Binkyridesagain · 30/08/2013 16:47

Just watched Last Chance Harvey, thanks for the recommendation, well worth the watch. I'm not keen on Dustin Hoffman but I enjoyed him in this.

Attackofthefiftyfootwoman · 30/08/2013 17:15

Love Emma T in this gets me every time, having been her position I think she acts it impeccably

Quick Q though ... After all these years I still can't work out if Bill Nighy and his manager are gay?

Parmarella · 30/08/2013 17:33

No, just best friends after all, no?

squoosh · 30/08/2013 17:35

Not gay, but straight soulmates.

Elsiequadrille · 30/08/2013 17:40

Awful film. I liked ET's scenes, though didn't cry. I also like the Andrew Lincoln/KK scenes, but agree they were All Wrong (and you'd be cross too, he was supposed to film the whole bleddy thing after all).

Did somebody mention The Holiday? I thought that was dire

HalfAPeaOneCrumbAndADropOfGin · 30/08/2013 17:41

I think Laura Linney and Andrew thingy should get together at the end. She asks him at the wedding if he loves his best friend (judging his mood but not the object of his desire) - he's better suited to her than 'i loooove to dance' advert bloke.

LottieJenkins · 30/08/2013 17:42

I LOVE The Holiday!!! Blush
