To always cry at the Emma Thompson bits in Love Actually?

Against my will, I've been forced to watch LA this evening. I find this film to be cheesy and irritating..apart from her part.

The bit where she is standing in her room after discovering that her husband has another woman. OMG. Wonderful film making.

It is a good 30 - 40 seconds of watching a woman do nothing, and yet it so beautifully charged with emotion. She blinks back her tears so her children don't see her cry. She goes to straighten the duvet as if it is a reflex action.

Then later on she tells Alan Rickman he has made "the life I lead seem foolish too". So lovely, so dignified. I also like the fact he doesn't get as far as having a physical affair, but that doesn't matter. The damage is done.

Gives me goosebumps.

YANBU, she is staggeringly good.

However YABU for not fast forwarding through the rest of the film as it is a pile of steaming shit apart from her scenes.

summerbreezer · 29/08/2013 21:03

Susu - I think it is left deliberately ambiguous. The audience feels the full force of her dilemma and heartbreak.

Oh, and for all of you who said it was shit and a Christmas film - I know. It was DP's choice. because he is a massive wet blanket He's the sensitive type.

YANNNNNBU. Gets me every time. And then when she goes downstairs and you see her kind of shake her hands and brace herself before she goes in, that kills me.

And I love the rest of the film too especially the Mariah song at the end

ImFineThankYou · 29/08/2013 21:11

I can not watch that part of the film as it makes me so terribly sad to watch. The feeling of absolute realisation and what's to come is quite overwhelming but then I cry at the part where he holds up cards to confess his love for his best mates wife so don't listen to me

Yes, I think we are left to draw our own conclusions wrt what happens to Emma's relationship

I would like to think she kicked the narcissistic cheating fucker to the kerb, however I think that she takes him back because she can't imagine life without him Sad

I have read too many relationships threads, haven't I ? Smile

Purpleknickers · 29/08/2013 21:55

anyfucker yep but hell you've earned your stripes Grin

That bit of the film always makes me cry, I was that woman left wondering and forgiving even though with hindsight I should have LTB... But hey I did in the end and I've never been happier

zaphod · 29/08/2013 21:58

Yanbu. Every time.

Doubtfuldaphne · 29/08/2013 22:01

I think ts a fantastic film and i get it off the DVD shelf every year! Her scene is the best part of the film and I love how she prances back in to the living room all bright and jolly for the sake of the children. Emma Thompson is one of England's finest actresses.

vincettenoir · 29/08/2013 22:03

Not at all. It is the second best storyline. But I hate the bit where she says 'do you mind if I absent myself'? Who would ever say that to their family?

HairyGrotter · 29/08/2013 22:04

That scene is amazingly emotive, she portrays it beautifully, makes the whole film worthwhile IMO.

I think we've all done the 'right, wipe the tears away, pull up your knickers and crack on' thing when required! She nails it

squoosh · 29/08/2013 22:04

Absolutely rubbish film but YANBU Emma Thompson's scene of heartbreak is one of the film's saving graces. Holding it together whilst falling apart, it moves me too.

I also like Laura Linney's scenes, she's a wonderful actor.

I won't mention all the many parts that irritate the fuck out of me, Liam Neeson's stepson, ugh, lock him in his room. Martine McCutcheon, 'nuff said. Andrew Lincoln's creepy and treacherous stalking of his best friend's wife...................

Sorry I got carried away there, Emma Thompson and Laura Linney are great in this film.

Lulabellarama · 29/08/2013 22:06

Another fan of ET's role in that film. In fact, the line she delivers 'How can you expect me to carry on, knowing everything will always be a little bit worse?', prompted me to ditch my cheating ex. Hurrah!

sillyoldfool · 29/08/2013 22:07

emma thompson is wonderful. I watched last chance harvey on the tv the other night too, and that's a gorgeous film, so simple, but lovely.
I met her once in real life and she's incredibly beautiful, totally luminous, with the most amazing skin.

morethanpotatoprints · 29/08/2013 22:08

YANBU, it got me too, must agree dire film though.

RedPencils · 29/08/2013 22:09

I didn't realise there were so many people who hate Love Actually as much as me

She is pure class in the film. The bit about 'knowing life will always be a tiny little bit worse' is heartbreaking.

Letticetheslug · 29/08/2013 22:10

yanbu, I cried and cried when she found that the necklace was not for her, I cant watch it again it is really painful..nobody else has agreed with me before!

SmiteYouWithThunderbolts · 29/08/2013 22:10

YANBU, I love her performance in that film and everything she does

I would like to think that AR doesn't have a physical affair and that, although it's never said, he knows that she knows about the emotional affair and the shame of it turns him into husband of the century and they live happily ever after. I am very optimistic and seen way too many Disney film endings though.

NonnoMum · 29/08/2013 22:11

Oh -was there a good bit in this film?? I never got far enough into it to watch a half decent scene...

and it was the film I watched the night before my wedding but I nearly ended up slitting my wrists instead not only because the film was so bad, but more upsetting was the fact that so many people raved about it and i decided I would have to lose them as friends

SubliminalMassaging · 29/08/2013 22:12

YANBU. One of the best films scenes ever. I love Emma Thompson.

monikar · 29/08/2013 22:12

YANBU - she is brilliant in this film. I haven't watched it for a couple of years but doesn't she think her husband has bought her a necklace (there's that funny scene with Rowan Atkinson as the salesman who insists on gift-wrapping it) and then the box turns out to be the CD.

LottieJenkins · 29/08/2013 22:14

I'll second watching Last Chance Harvey!! Fab film!!

thebody · 29/08/2013 22:16

she's brilliant and totally agree op.

for me it's that scene, also the Royal Family where Nanna tells Barbera that she was just glad she was living with her and not in a home, barbera is crying and combing her hair.. just beautiful poignant.

then the railway children and Bobby shouting 'daddy my daddy'

those 3 scenes always get me.

Onesleeptillwembley · 29/08/2013 22:18

I hate her in love actually. I just can't warm to her character - far too smug and 'worthy'.
