Run 1 was 2 x 8 min runs
Run 3 looks like a combo of 8/5 minute runs

So wtf is this 20 minutes business?! A mistake or the horrible truth?!

OP posts:
CMOTDibbler · 29/08/2013 20:05

The truth. You can do it - just keep putting one foot in front of the other and it'll soon be done

LauraPashley · 29/08/2013 20:14

Yikes, ok thank you, I thought/hoped it was a mistake ha ha! Baby won't go to sleep at the moment so goodness knows if I'll ever get out anyway! What is the logic of sticking a big long run in amongst all those interval runs?!

OP posts:
Grumpywino · 29/08/2013 20:15

You can do it! just run a bit slower, it really does help increase distance/time. Good luck!

Arion · 29/08/2013 20:17

It's because a long run then is a psychological barrier, physically, if you've done the other runs, you can do the 20 minutes.

I started C25K 5 stone overweight, struggled to get through the minute in the 1st week, but I did the 20 minute one on the 1st attempt. It wasn't a stroll but it was doable!

Good luck.

wem · 29/08/2013 20:18

I think when I did it it was week 5 run 3, but you might have slightly different plan to me. Still, you can definitely do it. It feels like a massive jump, but the rest of the plan has got you ready for it. You can do it!

Tee2072 · 29/08/2013 20:19

Wait 'til week 8... Grin

cece · 29/08/2013 20:22

You will be fine. Just take it slowly - don't aim for a long distance/fast time, just aim to finish the whole 20 mins without stopping.

I remember dreading doing it. I can now run for an hour.

cardibach · 29/08/2013 20:27

I was freaked out by it too, but other posters are right - you can do it because of the preparation you have completed. It's all in the mind!

PourquoiPas · 29/08/2013 20:28

I'm doing that run on Tuesday! I'm cakking it. It just seems crazy when the most I have ever run in one session is 2 x 8 min with a walk in between to then go to 20 min doesn't it!

Let me know how it goes - I will need inspiration!

sparkle12mar08 · 29/08/2013 21:14

You'll be surprised - I was really, really apprehensive about it, but I finished it with ease and felt I could have continued on. I didn't as I wanted to follow the programme faithfully though it did feel odd going back to intervals afterwards. That middle minute is perhaps a bit of a mental challenge bvut physically, it really isn't something you can't do, I promise. You'll be proud when you finish too.

I finished c25k in late spring and worked up to 10k in about 4 more weeks, after not having done any real exercise in 7 years, and not having run in 25 years! I'm back into it now after a whole month out and managed a comfortably feeling 5k without stopping. I do need to work on my times though if my fitness is to improve as well, they're slooow at present!

NanetteCarter · 29/08/2013 22:25

What C25K plan are you using if you don't mind me asking?

I'm on week 3 of one I found on about running and it doesn't vary the lengths of the run part eg it is W3 R4 x 4 this week and just increases week by week.

Is yours better for building run times?

ShirazSavedMySanity · 29/08/2013 22:37

I did the 20 minute run about a month ago. I never ever thought I could achieve something like that, but I did, and I am super proud of myself.

However, I have absolutely no desire whatsoever to ever run without intervals again. I found it hugely emotionally draining and the mental ability to run 20 minutes completely took it out of me.

So pleased I did it though!

BIWI · 29/08/2013 22:39

It's totally, totally in your head! You think you can't do it, but you will!

It's amazing but it's absolutely true. And you will feel fab when you've done it Grin

You are also a runner, once you've done the 10 minutes.

LauraPashley · 30/08/2013 15:45

I did it!! It was dark by the time I got out which is probably just as well given the state I was in when I got back! But you were all right, I did it no problem, it was the slowest run EVER, a total plod, but I never felt like I needed to stop which I think is the main thing at this stage.

I'm on my phone, so it's tricky to scroll up sorry, but for whoever asked re apps, I use Get Running and it's really good! I can play my own music and the voice just cuts in every now and then. Every week till this week has been the same, 3x exactly the same lengths of walking/running, but it all seems to up the ante from now on in! Eek!

Well done LauraPashley you should be very proud of your achievement.

If you've got both feet off the ground at the same time, you're running, it doesn't matter how fast - unless you're Mo Farah.

Good luck with the rest of the programme. Onwards and onwards Smile

cece · 30/08/2013 18:33

The main thing is that you did it. Worry about times/distances when you have finished the programme.

Bakingtins · 30/08/2013 18:44

Well done! I felt fab-u-lous after that run. It was the first time I believed that 30min/5k was possible.

Turniptwirl · 30/08/2013 20:19

My friend did it with her nieces, if they really struggled with a week they would repeat it the following week before moving on

Good luck!

hemel07 · 30/08/2013 20:21

What is it? I don't know what it is but would love to start running, can someone enlighten me?

NanetteCarter · 30/08/2013 20:22

Thanks, Laura.

I've been using the stopwatch on my phone to time my sections so that app would be easier! I'll have to figure it out!

What music d I you listen to? I've been listening to Sterephonic, Manics, AD/DC, Mumford and sons!

LauraPashley · 30/08/2013 20:24

I think it is an Nhs initiative originally, but basically it is a gentle, sensible way to get running, over a 9 week programme (although I started about 8 weeks ago and I'm only on week 5, trying to work around work and day's shifts!). It tells you exactly how long to run/walk for etc. I was struggling to do the 1 min runs when I started, then just ran for 20 mins last night!!

OP posts:
LauraPashley · 30/08/2013 20:27

Nanette I have just radically changed my music regime! I downloaded loads of dance stuff, Calvin Harris etc, some 90s cheesey dance etc. then realized I really don't like all that stuff! I understand some people might be spurred on by the tempo, but I did my 20 mins last night to things like crowded house, counting crows and Katie melua - was very chilled out and relaxing!

Bakingtins · 31/08/2013 00:25

hemel have a look at the NHS website, there are free to download podcasts of the C25K plans, though there are lots of other versions around. Nice supportive c25k threads on the sport and exercise boards too!

NanetteCarter · 01/09/2013 20:21

Well done on your 20 minutes! I started my week 4... still haven't sorted an app so will check that out now but did R5 W2 x4 today.....counting crows sound like one I should add to my playlist though...haven't listened in ages!

EmmaBemma · 01/09/2013 20:25

Well done for doing it! I'm a runner myself - never did the C25K program, but did some sort of walk/run thing for the first couple of weeks, years ago. I well remember what a mental barrier anything like 20 minutes non stop was. It's as much of a big deal as your first 10K!
