Think I've broken an unwritten "mum rule"

Decided to bake cakes with the dc. Filled one tray and there was still half the mix left over and the dc were going mad about licking it out so I just have them the half full bowl and a spoon each.

Tell me I'm making memories and they will always remember the day I let them eat cake mix rather than just being a lazy slattern. Or aib hideously unreasonable?

My daughter openly admits that one of the reason she likes baking so much is "licking the bowl".

The cake at the end of it is just a happy by-product Grin

DeWe · 29/08/2013 12:03

Definitely a good idea. I have eaten cake mix all my life, as dm did before me, and my dc do. We buy economy eggs generally, and have never had salmonella, or anything else from it.

I remember dgranny telling me that dm said when she was little that she would never cook cakes, she would always eat them raw. Unsurprisingly dm refused to do this. Grin

Crumble mix raw is another favourite in the house.

KatyPutTheCuttleOn · 29/08/2013 12:08

It's the best bit of baking :)

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 29/08/2013 12:08

Licking the bowl is the best bit about making cakes! I remember my mum letting us do it too.

I made cupcakes with my 18 month old today (well sort of, he gave it a stir). He did not get to lick the bowl, I did!

At what age would you let them do it? I figured my 18 month was a bit young.

CockyFox · 29/08/2013 12:11

You definitely did the right thing, my mum always used to do that for me because to this day I don't like sponge cake but I love love love cake mix so if I didn't eat my share raw I didn't have any at all.

Kezztrel · 29/08/2013 12:14

My mum once made me a whole roll of ginger cookie dough to eat for myself, because I always liked it better than the cookies. I will always remember that day!!

EndoplasmicReticulum · 29/08/2013 13:39

I always used to let mine do this, until son 2 spent the night vomiting afterwards. Now I know that it might not be the raw eggs in the mix that caused this, could have been a coincidental bug. It's put me off though.

Now they are confined to cake mix with no raw eggs in only, or icing.

Just read you have low risk chickens, in which case go for it.

mouseymummy · 29/08/2013 13:49

If you ask my 9yo what she remembers about last summer it was the day I forgot about the gas works and tried to make cakes. Blush as I was pg witg dd2 she got the bloody lot! Angry

She told everyone about it for weeks and says that it was one of the best days at home! She even told her gran (her dads mum) and they spent a day making me cakes that I could eat, which was lovely of her!!

Lweji · 29/08/2013 13:56

YWBU if you had had the mixture only for yourself.
As it was the kids, that's fine.

I hope you had some anyway

OxfordBags · 29/08/2013 14:01

My DH is still resentful of the fact that his v uptight mum wouldn't let them lick the bowl OR cook with them (because boys' willies fall off if they cook, obviously)! Whereas I have loads of fab memories of both, and one of my fave memories is me and my brother trying to lick a giant mixing bowl at the same time.

35 and 30 we were at the time, etc., etc.

farrowandbawl · 29/08/2013 14:07

I thought that was the whole point of baking with mum?

Licking the bowl, spatula and beaters afterwards is the best bit.

My nan used to let me, my mum used to let me, Ex and I let the kids lick the bowls and now DD's baking, she lets DS lick the bowl (she gets the beaters and spoon from the filling).

I used to make marzipan for, then DP, to eat and I still make cookie dough for the kdis and I to eat raw (there's never enough left to actually put in the oven).

AnotherStitchInTime · 29/08/2013 14:11

Envy I want some

Not allowed due to expanding belly, only 4 months to go...

YANBU it is one of the best bits about baking, especially if the mixture has melted chocolate in it mmm.

Kezztrel · 29/08/2013 15:47

For people who don't like/can't eating raw eggs, there's a very good, ancient Blue Peter chocolate cake recipe that uses mayonnaise instead of eggs :) It's really really moist and delicious. And doesn't taste of mayo.

Pickle131 · 29/08/2013 15:55

My husband made muffins last night and when he wasn't looking I cleaned out the bowl and the whisks! Raw flour is meant to be hard to digest but I've never had a problem with it. As for raw eggs, my mum used to give me OJ with an egg yolk whisked in for protein sometimes. Just tasted of frothy orange but I can imagine the thought being a bit offputting. I'd never have said no to half a bowl as a child though now I would think Shock if I saw you do that!

DoJo · 29/08/2013 17:50

I don't like cake, but I do like cake mix so would happily have made up for all the missed cakes in my childhood with half a bowl of the stuff. Sounds like a perfect solution to your single tray problem...!

youmeatsix · 29/08/2013 18:00

have i got this wrong? you are eating the cake mix before its cooked? batter made from sugar, flour, eggs & butter? Hmm really? it smells horrible, whyyyyyyyyyy???

SPBisResisting · 29/08/2013 18:06

youmeatsix, yep :o
Try it, you'll be converted :o

5madthings · 29/08/2013 18:07

because its delicious!!

i even ate it when preg. i bought good quality free range, lion stamped eggs. never had a problem.

the issue with eggs is generally not the yolk/white. the germs are most likely to be on the shell so you should always wash your hands after handling the egg shell.

youmeatsix · 29/08/2013 18:08

i've never had it Sad, and in turn neither have our 3 children Shock gosh, i cant say i'm convinced, but i shall try it

GrimmaTheNome · 29/08/2013 18:10

It shouldn't smell horrible - unless either your eggs are too old or your butter has gone rancid. In which case the baked cake wouldn't taste good either.

SmiteYouWithThunderbolts · 29/08/2013 18:12

Cake mix is amazing. I much prefer it to the finished cake.

RalphGnu · 29/08/2013 18:17

Cake mix really shouldn't smell horrible.

Give it a try!

crushedintherush · 29/08/2013 18:17

mmmmmm, yummy ! Cake mix and dippy eggs....do you have a spare room, by any chance? Just say yes and I'll get my coat...

Tapirbackrider · 29/08/2013 18:22

A huge favourite chez Tapir!
