I had been looking for a job for ages with no success. About a week ago, I was finally offered a job. It's a great company and pays reasonably well.

So I should be happy right? Well, I am happy and I have no intention of turning it down. I feel like I can really do well with this job and I loved the culture of the company.

Except that I am also secretly a little disappointed and sad :(

I'm a London girl- I studied here and lived here for 5 years and I love it. I don't want to leave London :( Especially not to go to Glasgow which is where this job is.

No offence intended towards anyone who lives in Scotland, but I am so apprehensive about moving there! It's too cold Grin

I also found it a bit boring when I went there. Granted, it was only for a day but it felt like a month. Blush

To make matters worse, I don't know anybody at all in Glasgow (or Scotland for that matter) and this means that I will be very lonely.
My parents live in a different country entirely and that was already hard enough to deal with, but now I have to move away from my mates too.

I know I'm being a big baby about this but I really wanted to vent!

Anyone with similar experiences? How did you deal with it?

I'd also appreciate any advice from people who currently live in Scotland. I've been told that it might be better to live in Edinburgh and travel to Glasgow for work. Does that sound feasible?? I haven't been to Edinburgh yet, but a lot of my mates said it was better than Glasgow Confused

Glasgow is amazing. Do not commute as you'll struggle to make friends. If you live and work in Glasgow you could go out for drinks after work and things. Brilliant shopping and friendly people. Also great night life. Loving it.

ArgyMargy · 28/08/2013 17:07

Seriously don't worry about the NHS - they get significantly more ££ per head than England & Wales, which reflects the greater deprivation levels. Just don't be tempted to adopt the Scottish approach to health. Be frugal with the whisky and demand vegetables!!

HotCrossPun · 28/08/2013 17:07

Glasgow is an amazing city, and 100x better than Edinburgh.

There is loads to do and see, there are beautiful affordable Victorian properties, transport links are good, and the people are lovely Grin

You can't really base the standards of Scotland's healthcare system on one persons experience. You get free prescriptions for a start!

squoosh · 28/08/2013 17:09

I've only had good NHS experiences in Glasgow. I always get to see my GP on a next day basis.

primallass · 28/08/2013 17:10

This is making me Glasgow-sick Grin

I think you will find work colleagues much friendlier and that going out after work on a Friday night is mandatory ...

Thaumatrope · 28/08/2013 17:10

Glaswegians are famously very chatty and you'll get your ear in eventually Grin The general way of communicating is light but mostly harmless aggression Grin People can be very affectionate like that and it's understood that nobody will take offence.

Property is cheaper and there are some lovely areas of the city, the equivalent of which in London would most likely be out of your price range. Edinburgh is more expensive and I'd only take your friends' advice about living in Edinburgh if you are loaded and also don't mind the relative quietness and the commute.

The Saltire is on everything because it's Scotland. When you go south of the border (or just to John Lewis) you notice the Union flag is everywhere because that's what people like. It doesn't mean anything really, it's just easy decoration. People do talk like everything worth anything emanates from Scotland and it's wearing, but it's just local-ness and tbh it happens everywhere.

There's a great music and art scene in Glasgow and a shitload of good stuff going on.

It does rain a lot. Sorry.

primallass · 28/08/2013 17:10

Oh, and there's Partick Thistle too.

primallass · 28/08/2013 17:12

And you'll get to vote in the referendum.

squoosh · 28/08/2013 17:12

Oh yes, you'll hear ALL about the referendum.

TallyGrenshall · 28/08/2013 17:14

I just remembered, people speak really quickly, Glasgow especially Grin. While you're settling in, you will probably find yourself asking folk to repeat themselves....a lot Grin

stripytopgirl · 28/08/2013 17:14

hi, congratulations on the new job Grin

I'd just like to add that property costs a lot more in Edinburgh than Glasgow whether buying or renting and the cost of commuting between the cities per month is almost equal to a month's rent of a trendy one bed flat in the west end, and its a total hassle at peak times.

my advice if you love London and you like being where everything is happening, is to get a flat in the merchant city or if you're a little more bohemian, the west end. I have a family member from Glasgow who lives in London and loves it because according to him both cities 'have the same feel'.

Glasgow is great, it's easy for day trips to Edinburgh or lovely parts of the Scottish countryside....

sadly I have no advice on how to deal with ppl being bad to you about being English, I don't see it happen that often. just don't call anyone 'jock'and you'll be fine!!!!

Pinupgirl · 28/08/2013 17:15

I lived in Glasgow nearly all my life and used to moan about it but having spent the last 10 years living a couple of hours outside Glasgow I wish I could move back!

Great shops,bars,restaurants,museums-most of them free!-lovely parks for when the sun peeks out. Festivals,theatres-there is a lot going on.

As for your question about the Nhs-well having had extensive treatment both in Scotland and England I can unequivocally say that imo Scottish hosiptals are far superior.

iliketea · 28/08/2013 17:15

I am so so jealous EnvyEnvyEnvyEnvyEnvy - I would move back to Glasgow in a heartbeat. I've lived in the south for 15 years and I still miss the friendliness and heart and soul of Glasgow.

It's a fabulous city. And don't worry about not knowing people, it's such a friendly city, you'll have people chat to you every single day (even if you don't want them too). One thing I still struggle with in the south is the fact that people look at me like I'm mad when I chat to them (because we're in the queue / at the bus stop / in the same park) - in Glasgow, that's perfectly normal behaviour!!!

VaginaPagina · 28/08/2013 17:16

Liking this already. Free prescriptions, Friday nights out, cheaper property- sounds good.

The rain thing is annoying but being a Londoner I am no stranger to rain. An excuse to invest in a new trench. ;)

So is the shopping scene really better in Glasgow than Edinburgh?

OP posts:
squoosh · 28/08/2013 17:18

Shopping is much better in Glasgow I would say although Edinburgh does have Harvey Nichols, bizarrely.

HotCrossPun · 28/08/2013 17:19

Edinburgh shopping is dire. Honestly, it's a waste of time.

Glasgow has big shopping centres, high street shops, brilliant charity shops and quirky independents as well.

You should start to look at properties just now, I think that will get you a bit excited about moving when you see what type of house you can afford compared to London Grin

iliketea · 28/08/2013 17:22

Shopping in Glasgow is fab - google Glasgow's shopping mile. Everything from primark to designer.

WafflyVersatile · 28/08/2013 17:22

It is much rainier than London.

I'm not the best advert as I did live in Glasgow for a year and moved to London because I wasn't really happy there. I just didn't quite settle. I made some friends but not who I would choose if I had a choice. It is friendly though and an excellent city in many ways. I'm very fond of the city itself even if I didn't make a life for myself there.

And if you live in Glasgow you can visit here:

NonnoMum · 28/08/2013 17:22

That's a long way to go for a job, OP. I imagine it is a great entry level job?? Sounds exciting but of course daunting. What line of work, OP?

stripytopgirl · 28/08/2013 17:23

glaswegians (and Alex Salmond) will happily tell you that Glasgow is ranked 2nd in the UK for shopping, only London is supposedly better.not sure where this info came from but it's something people from Glasgow are VERY proud of!

PoppyAmex · 28/08/2013 17:24

Whoever said Edinburgh is prettier but Glasgow has the heart was spot on.

As a foreigner, I'm always surprised at the sheer kindness and friendliness of strangers in Glasgow. They're direct to the point of bluntness sometimes, but good god they're seriously nice.

squoosh · 28/08/2013 17:24

I've been here nearly ten years though, and have started thinking that I would love a change of scenery!

Jacaqueen · 28/08/2013 17:27

Glasgow much better for shops.

Where abouts will you be working roughly.

We even have a small scale underground.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 28/08/2013 17:31

Edinburgh is rubbish. Glasgow's TONS better.

PS congrats on the job!
