To expect my MIL not to give my baby alcohol

She wants him to have brandy for teething, I don't and have made that clear but she looks after him on occasion. Do I frisk the house for alcohol!?

YANBU

She should give the baby jagermeister.

magimedi · 28/08/2013 14:47

YANBU

SP - You are very naughty!!

I was given whisky rubbed on my gums as a baby - but I am v.v.v old.

ToriaPumpkin · 28/08/2013 14:50

YANBU OP.

You do realise teething gel contains ethanol? Which is alcohol. :o

But no she should not go against your wishes!!! And no she shouldn't do it.

Fairy1303 · 28/08/2013 14:52

Hmmm. That depends on your MIL. If she is like mine, frisk, and possible don't leave the baby unattended. If she is normal, she will respect your wishes.

On the other hand - my grandmother tried to tell me to give DS 'half cows milk, half water with a small teaspoon of brown sugar in' as he has reflux. He is 9 weeks.
How times have changed!

Thepowerof3 · 28/08/2013 14:52

That wouldn't be fair on me SP as I am yet to sample the delights of Jagermeister! No way am I letting my baby get in there first

It was whiskey we had rubbed on our gums. It got me ready for when I was older and around whiskey drinkers. Love whiskey shots now.

Thepowerof3 · 28/08/2013 14:53

I don't use teething gel, in any event she was talking about rubbing it in to gums she was taking about spiking his bottle

Power I had them Saturday night. I didn't get home til 2pm Sunday! They are delightful! Grin

Thepowerof3 · 28/08/2013 14:54

Sorry, wasn't talking about rubbing it into his gums

OP posts:
Thepowerof3 · 28/08/2013 14:55

Great now I want a drink

YouTheCat · 28/08/2013 14:56

She'd be breaking the law if she did that.

YouTheCat · 28/08/2013 14:57

this

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 28/08/2013 15:00

She wouldn't really do it though would she? I mean mostMILs do bang on about what they did with their kidsand do often feed inappropriate foods at inappropriate ages, but they don't usually give alcohol to babies in bottles do they??

I mean I've heard of it going on the gums but not in an a risk bottle.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 28/08/2013 15:01

In an actual bottle.

Does she have form?

adagio · 28/08/2013 15:01

Anbesol liquid is aniseed flavoured alcohol with added ingredients which are all ending in -caine which I imagine to be chemically related to cocaine. It smells like pernod and the baby likes it Grin

It does seem to work, in fairness.

Sorry that didn't help much.

KateSpade · 28/08/2013 15:05

My grandma tried to do this after weeks of moaning/shouting that i was a terrible parent Hmm

Amber76 · 28/08/2013 15:49

My bother in laws wife often dips the dummy into wine and gives it to the baby to suck on - I nearly fell off my chair the first time I saw it. And the baby wouldn't even be giving out - its just something the baby likes. All that side of family seem to think its fine - my mil sees nothing wrong with that and would often make jokes about giving the children sips of alcohol and I suspect she would do it if I wasn't around. At the end of the day I don't suppose it does any real harm but there is no way I would allow my kids to be given anything like that.

SweetBabyCheeses · 28/08/2013 16:05

This would really wind me up. Surely she was joking though. However my friends MIL gave her baby the dregs out of small bottle of wine at the post christening reception. The baby was only 5 months old. There was murder.

CatThiefKeith · 28/08/2013 16:13

Dm did this to me. Someone told her to put a tot of brandy in my bottle to help me sleep when I was teething. Dm worked in a pub, and assumed tot meant a full bloody measure! Shock

Apparently I slept for 14 hours, and woke up just as they were finally about to go to A&E and confess their sins. So then they didn't bother! Shock

This was the early 70's though, surely no one would do it now?

badbride · 28/08/2013 16:16

LOL at Jaegermeister. I have an elderly relative who as an infant had his bottle spiked with laudanum (10% opium tincture). Apparently, he was a very quiet baby! Shock

happygirl87 · 28/08/2013 16:24

Elderly relatives put whiskey in my bottle as a baby, and apparently "finally got some peace and quiet" Hmm, my great aunt also gave my brother so many finger drops of champagne at his christening that he was apparently very obviously pissed!

But no, YANBU- in those days people also used to blow cigarette smoke over the cot, no one had car seats, etc, etc- times have changed.

UnexpectedStepmum · 28/08/2013 17:13

Interesting all these stories of booze given to children. My parents gave us "thimble fulls" of wine as babies. DSis1 drinks too much and gets lairy, DSis2 has several alcohol related convictions and is just coming out of rehab. I am teetotal.

Stick to your guns, YANBU.

MadeOfStarDust · 28/08/2013 17:19

I was given the champagne dipped finger to suck at my christening by various relatives... used to be a tradition.. I'm tee-total....

Imo a little alchohol and a little sugar does wonders for humans of any age
