To expect my MIL not to give my baby alcohol

She wants him to have brandy for teething, I don't and have made that clear but she looks after him on occasion. Do I frisk the house for alcohol!?

I got pissed at a Greek wedding when I was 18 months.

No one gave me the champagne though, I was just toddling about taking it off the tables.

Apparently I slept a lot that afternoon. Grin

DM gave us all 'tastes' of wine when we were babies.

Now, shockingly, I drink probably 2-3 glasses of wine a week as an absolute maximum, DSis2 drinks on special occasions, DSis3 not really bothered, and DSis4 about as much as any other 24yo.

Anecdotes really prove nothing......

livinginwonderland · 28/08/2013 18:39

I had tastes of wine from a v.young age and I'm only 24 now, so this was the late eighties. My dad used to dip his finger in red wine and let me try it. Gives me a horrific hangover now though!

Thepowerof3 · 28/08/2013 18:40

I can't trust her 100 percent so may have to frisk, he doesn't sleep well as is constantly teething at the moment so she has her heart in the right place I think as she is thinking about me but alcohol is a no go. What if I enjoyed my full nights sleep so much he had to get drunk every night!

Teething gels do not contain alcohol, anbesol is a local anaesthetic, lidocaine. One gripe water was not that long ago withdrawn from sale as it was discovered there was alcohol in it so it had to be reformulated. Giving any alcohol to under 5's is now illegal.

When dd1 was born my mil advised alcohol in her bottle to help her sleep - she was a midwife Hmm

Thepowerof3 · 28/08/2013 18:57

They thought I was being precious as I didn't want them to give him adult bonjela for teething but its not for under 16s.

My granny gave me alcohol for my gums when I was teething, however instead of rubbing it on my gums she gave me a couple of tablespoons of it! Mum and Dad came back to a very happy and giggly baby! I don't think it done me any harm Wink

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 28/08/2013 19:33

Oh gosh, nightmare. YANBU. Hopefully she won't do it. MIL gave both of mine copious amounts of champagne on her fingers after their baptisms. And then she wonders why I tend to break with Catholic tradition and not get them baptised when they are tiny little babies - I prefer to get them done when they're a bit nearer 1 and their livers are that bit more developed!

IneedAsockamnesty · 28/08/2013 19:39

The bonjella thing is because of a really rare but very serious syndrome that has been associated with that product can't remember what its called tho.

And I would go spare if I discovered anyone had given alcohol to any under 5 of mine and that would include calling the police

SisterMatic · 28/08/2013 19:44

Reyes syndrome I think sock

Thepowerof3 · 28/08/2013 20:46

I think it is Reyes, same as aspirin. It was quite funny on holiday as she kept trying to take him to her room for a while and I kept slipping him away, they could've got blind drunk together

My 80yo old grandfather (who is lovely and was apparently a very involved father by 1960s standards) did keep joking about us putting a bit of whiskey in DS's bottle to get him off to sleep. At least I think he was joking Grin. Seriously YANBU.

Thepowerof3 · 29/08/2013 06:52

Imagine a baby with a hangover, not good

I seriously don't know how previous generations survived the traumas of such slapdash laxidaisical parenting without todays copious amounts of bubble wrap, and threats of the law >eye roll

Thepowerof3 · 29/08/2013 07:05

Mmm well I can't imagine getting my MIL arrested but don't think I'm bubble wrapping to think its best the he doesn't get given a brandy laced bottle. I'll have one myself if I didn't have to get up all night with the little beggar

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 29/08/2013 08:36

Indeed OP. Brandy in a bottle has never exactly been standard practice!

Mojavewonderer · 29/08/2013 08:43

My nephew used to dip his dummy in my brothers bitter! It was so funny and he slept great ;)
