In thinking 'piles' should be more talked about?

First time in my life I've had them.. And OUCH!

But I'm sooo embarrassed.. I've had to make up a 'pulling a muscle' injury at work to cover why I keep wincing and squeaking when I sit down wrong!

Allegedly 40% of the population has had them.. So why aren't they ever talked about?

Or am I just a total prude lol

See, I'm seriously considering nc-ing due to writing this. But I have post baby piles and they've been a nightmare since DS2 (never really sorted themselves out after Ds1 but were manageable). I hate the horrible cream and nasty applicator and am curious about the treatment options. I had to see the very worst, most unsympathetic GP at our local practice when I couldn't bear it anymore and he gave me the decent cream. Thankfully he also referred me and I've had the letter inviting me to see the specialist in about a million weeks time wondering if the health insurance through work will cover it but can't face the conversation!

PollyPlummer · 28/08/2013 19:22

I had them when I was upfuffed and again recently.

I didn't realise that they would deflate after a few days. I have just got saggy grape size balloons around my arse now.

Has anyone successfully pushed them back up ?
I was too scared to, it hurt too much.

expatinscotland · 28/08/2013 19:24

They are a nightmare! Hemoclin. It's the way to go!

trashcanjunkie · 28/08/2013 19:36

ok, here's my recipe for ultimate pile success.

a) do talk about them, in the quiet of a good friends kitchen. It's rubbish suffering alone

b) always use moist toilet tissue (andrex is my personal favourite) for wiping after a poo

c) drink plenty of water - hydration is very important in pile management

d) avoid alcohol (see above)

e) when suffering an attack use cream on the outside of your bumhole and cream suppository inside using fingers not applicator (you can wash them after, and your bum should be kept scrupulously clean anyway with the moist tissues)

f) remember to laugh. Bums are funny.

Nicknameinvalid · 28/08/2013 19:43

Thanks for the tips ladies!

I'm a bit squeamish myself about the whole 'push them back up' I tried but it hurt like fuck they came back out again!!!

Though I only have one.. Granted its a biggish one nearly broke my neck looking in a mirror but it's only one.. Far too embarrassed to go to the GP.. But was debating banding it myself with dc's hair bands! Grin

i am quite happy to bore my nearest and dearest about mine, especially as I was the first one in our group of friends to have a baby, so feel it's my duty to worn the uninitiated

mine started after I had DD1, returned when I was pg with dd2, but my worse flare-up was last month. i cancelled several social engagements in favour of lying (face down, obviously) on the sofa, whimpering, until the suppositories did their stuff. the offending haemorrhoid was so big I worried that i might in fact be growing a testicle.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 28/08/2013 19:56

I've never been pregnant but I have piles. They are grim and weird feeling.

Humuhumunukunukuapuaa · 28/08/2013 19:57

I had mine removed. It was the most painful horrid long thing ever. I was in AGONY. It took me 4 weeks to recover and I didn't tell a soul apart from dp. Not anyone. I was so embarrassed

Incidentally The Most Painful Operaton Ever didn't work and I've still got an empty balloon thing and another pile :(

May I ask? Does it interfere with your love life? I can bare to let dp do the sec from behind. Which is a shame Blush

Humuhumunukunukuapuaa · 28/08/2013 19:58

Sec = sex. My phone is as prudish as I am

SirRaymondClench · 28/08/2013 19:59

My arse was like a blood orange in the months after my DS birth.
I didn't like to talk about it then, just slathered on the Anusol and got on with it.
Thought it would be bad after DD but it wasn't too bad.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 28/08/2013 20:01

Sitting on the toilet and breathing seems to help my piles, not sure why but it does.

expatinscotland · 28/08/2013 20:09

I've heard any op to remove them is horrid and can be unsuccessful. :(

Mine are external and believe me, there is NO pushing them back up!

onlysettleforbutterflies · 28/08/2013 20:18

I have had the op and haven't had them since, even when pregnant. They also removed a fissure and cut the muscle at the same time so it was a horrendous op but not sure how it compares to a normal removal. Was worth it though!

Chesntoots · 28/08/2013 20:25

I have them due to IBS. Its not the pain really, its the bleeding and I have to wear one of those always extra long towels every day.

I do talk about them to my mates at work. I was surprised how many other people have them but don't ever mention it. They all seemed a bit relieved someone had actually spoken about it!

NeedlesCuties · 28/08/2013 20:27

OP, YANBU. I'd never really heard of piles and even now I'm a mum of two kids I still haven't read much anywhere about them.

I was untroubled until DC2 was about a month old when I must have burst a pile (didn't even really know I had one) and it turned into an anal fissure. Talk about pain!!!!

2 doctors examined me, had 2 different types of camera tests and was given lots of lotions and potions. Also was on waiting list for surgery to fix the fissure if it didn't heal itself (Google it if you dare!). But praise the Lord, it healed itself!

Twinklestarstwinklestars · 28/08/2013 20:27

I got them when pregnant with ds3 who is 9 weeks. Anusol was the only thing that helped but they were awful.

KnottedAnchorChief · 28/08/2013 20:40

Not namechanging, I don't care. I got them after DC2 and then one thrombosed and landed me in A&E. I didn't even know what it was until that happened so yes, I wish I'd been warned. I thought it was The End!

Thankfully I was on maternity leave as I wouldn't have fancied explaining to work that I couldn't come in because my arse had exploded.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 28/08/2013 20:46

Dizzy77 I work in Health insurance and about 20% of our calls are about piles- please don't be embarrassed- we speak to many people a day with problems they're embarrassed about. We are able to help a lot of people get em sorted quickly so don't hesitate to ring! Smile

growingbytheday · 28/08/2013 21:00
