This comment just came up on the radio news, supposedly said by Jamie Oliver about one of the families he was working with in his new TV show.

AIBU to wonder how the fuck what you eat relates to what TV you have?

Surely this just reinforces stereotypes of the people likely to have bad diets through lack of education on the matter? What a bullshit statement.

OP posts:
FasterStronger · 28/08/2013 18:28

bullshit

you keep mentioning it.

swallowedAfly · 28/08/2013 18:28

because it's kind of relevant on a thread about parents feeding their children don't you think?

FasterStronger · 28/08/2013 18:29

do what you like.

i am explaining why i don't have children which is pretty fucking pertinent if you keep mentioning that i don't have any.

swallowedAfly · 28/08/2013 18:30

or do you honestly believe cooking yourself a nice little pasta dish of an evening is the same as feeding children day in and day out on a limited budget after a full days work, a school run, homework and all of the housework and basic shit that needs doing?

i have been both childless and a mother. i can promise you shopping, cooking and eating is different with children.

FasterStronger · 28/08/2013 18:30

this thread is not 'what should i feed little Johnny?'

its about JOs recent comments in the news - the title is a quote from him

swallowedAfly · 28/08/2013 18:31

yes a quote from him about a mother feeding her child. about poor families feeding their children.

limitedperiodonly · 28/08/2013 18:32

I've been googling and noticed that on some sites we're the fattest country in Europe. But Germany, Portugal, Spain and Jamie's favourite recruitment pool Lithuania are in the running too.

Turn it around and it could be a matter of national pride, like winning the Ashes.

I think Jamie is unpatriotic.

I'm really looking forward to his webchat tomorrow.

expatinscotland · 28/08/2013 18:35

This month, 15-year-old boy in Kyrgzstan died of fecking Bubonic plague after eating a groundhog. 80 more people are possibly infected. Let's all race back down to that bottom again. Those were the days, eh?

mignonette · 28/08/2013 18:35

Just remember that the taxes paid by Faster pays for your children all of those making spiteful comments about childlessness and what qualifications one should have for discussing diet.

Delia Smith has no children yet we don't get nasty comments directed at her advice regarding feeding families on a low budget. No comments about 'what would she know' if people disagreed with her.

Some nasty ganging up on here.

limitedperiodonly · 28/08/2013 18:35

Foraged, I hope, dahling

I'm strapping on my crampons as we speak ohdearnigel. It's what keeps me so trim. And my fingers are so muscular, so DH tells me.

My favourite bit of the thread was someone telling poor people to go and shoot a dear.

So now we want the poor to shoot pensioners and then eat them, I suppose it provides a cheap meal and frees up council houses. I await to see it become part of the Tory Manifesto.

Empress77 · 28/08/2013 18:37

I too dont get why only poor families with children are suddenly the only issue allowed here - do not families without children also struggle to live on a budget?

mignonette · 28/08/2013 18:38

Aris Grin. FGS do not give them ideas. I've already let slip the Workhouse one.

FasterStronger · 28/08/2013 18:39

swallowedAfly so are you saying that people who don't have children should not comment on this thread?

usualsuspect · 28/08/2013 18:41

Tbf, faster went trawling through MN and brought up a thread by saf.

So she's not quite the innocent in all this.

ubik · 28/08/2013 18:41

At least people with children can eat them. The lucky bastards.

FasterStronger · 28/08/2013 18:42

yes i did. because what she was presenting was inconsistent with past threads.

Thymeout · 28/08/2013 18:43

Well said, mignonette.

Good point about Delia, too.

As another poster said, one of the problems today is the division between children's food and adult food. Back in the day, children ate the same as adults. You don't need to have children to know how to cook good, cheap food.

usualsuspect · 28/08/2013 18:43

Oh Blimey, did I post dear Blush

Still, good idea to free up council houses.

FasterStronger · 28/08/2013 18:44

and help raise more money with the bedroom tax Wink

usualsuspect · 28/08/2013 18:45

Bad form to bring up past threads though,Faster.

Not surprising you pissed her off.

SubliminalMassaging · 28/08/2013 18:46

I hate it when people do that. (change tack I mean) and I think dredging up old threads is warranted if someone is blatantly contradicting themselves. If you have had a change of opinion on something then say so on the thread and justify it. Don't look like a hypocrite.

Having said that, I have no idea what SAF did or didn't say on this thread or any other - haven't read it!

limitedperiodonly · 28/08/2013 18:46

lard on toast

You've just reminded me. One of my favourite things is lardo which is thinly-sliced pork fat served on bread or toast in northern Italy. I can't get it here, except at obscene prices in restaurants like Jamie's.

Does Jamie want to talk about the nutritional value of eating that, whether in front of a widescreen TV or not?

mignonette · 28/08/2013 18:46

My two closest friends are married teachers. They do not have children. They run a breakfast club, a gardening club and raise money to fund the provision of healthier food snacks for hungrier children and try to educate their charges in the development of cooking skills and dietary knowledge.

They know exactly what it is to be on a low budget from seeing the experiences of all the children in their care. In fact their viewpoint is often far more objective and clear than that of one parent with just their family concerns. They do not need their own to know this. They devote a large amount of their time to helping raise other people's children both educationally and otherwise. They would be extremely hurt to be told there opinion is less valid or informed because they have never had tu run around their own children. Partly because like many people without their own kids, their lives are full of other peoples including nephews, nieces, godchildren and the children of their friends. It is nonsense to say a childless person will always know less than a parent just as much as it is to say that a parent will always know more.

Owllady · 28/08/2013 18:47

I am going to answer thread about JO now with...

who is Jamie Oliver?

because he's not worth it :)
