As the subject matter says really.

As in you already had kids so when your DH married you he married into a 'ready made family'? If so YANBU and should talk to them about it.

WorraLiberty · 25/08/2013 20:58

Do you collapse when they fill your drawers?

OldMacEIEIO · 25/08/2013 21:03

maybe they mean it as a compliment.
like, er........
well....

ok, Im struggling
but that DOES NOT mean they dont mean it as a compliment

BiscuitDunker · 25/08/2013 21:04

I'm very confused as to what is meant by the term "flat pack family"!!

Do you only ever buy furniture that comes flat packed?

Are you cheap?

Are you all mis-matched and un-alined?

Do you come with instructions?

Do you have a few screws loose and/or missing?

Are you considered common?

Are you Swedish?

Is your surname Argos?

Are you frustrating and everyones worst nightmare because no matter how much people try they just can't get you together properly or you all fall apart after 5minutes?

You really are going to explain what your in-laws mean when they call you a "flat pack family" OP because none of us have got a clue!

Finola1step · 25/08/2013 21:06

Do they arrive at your house, filled with trepidation, wander around aimlessly for two hours, get lost going to the loo, eventually find their way to the exit after buying an unwanted house plant and the ever so important basket and eat a hot dog as they leave?

Or are they just terrible snobs? If they are, send them around to my house, they will have a great time tutting at the Expedit, Billy, Leksvik et al.

Do come back and tell us more OP.

Snazzyenjoyingsummer · 25/08/2013 21:06

As in, a ready-made family, i.e. one your husband has just stepped into because you already had kids? Like many others posters I've never heard this expression before - I'm guessing.

Whatever it means it doesn't sound complimentary. Try the time-honoured 'Did you mean that to sound so rude?'

And give us the backstory...

dopeysheep · 25/08/2013 21:06

I am imagining you now as cardboard cutouts, or like Flat Eric.

Loving the ideas for what is meant by "flat packed family". Genuinely laughing my head off much to Dh's disgust as he tries to watch the goggle box!

Are your initials MDF?

HerrenaHarridan · 25/08/2013 21:17

I love the passive aggressive "feed them meatballs every time they come over"

I'm assuming you mean their pfb ds has stepped into your flat packed broken home and assembled it into a thing that resembles a family but it actually made of chipboard and is in danger of collapsing at any second

In which case they are being incredibly rude and you should definitely say something

SoThisIsHowYouNameChange · 25/08/2013 21:25

YANBU. Bloody aggravating. Yes. And then they have the cheek!

Could do again, though.

StElmo · 25/08/2013 21:26

She means they have lots of screws missing and no one cares when they complain.

Parmarella · 25/08/2013 21:28

Subtle and intriguing insult, they Actually sound fun

Mojavewonderer · 25/08/2013 21:30

Husbands mother says 'how are you and the flat packs?' I believe she means 'ready made family' I would prefer it if she said how are you, mojavewonderer and the kids?' Its not like I say 'how are the out laws?' That's just rude.

OP posts:
Annunziata · 25/08/2013 21:31

But flat pack furniture is not ready made, you have to build it yourself Confused

Mojavewonderer · 25/08/2013 21:32

Tbh I was just wondering if anyone else has heard of that saying?

OP posts:
candycoatedwaterdrops · 25/08/2013 21:32

Umm what do mean by 'ready made family'? Did your children come out fully grown? Confused

Bowlersarm · 25/08/2013 21:32

then maybe you should reply with 'we're fine. How are the outlaws?'

Mojavewonderer · 25/08/2013 21:33

Oh believe me I know and that makes it even more irritating. Can't even get the damn saying right can they.

OP posts:
Mehrida · 25/08/2013 21:34

That's pretty mean.

YANBU

lurkedtoolong · 25/08/2013 21:34

Ask her what she means by it as you can't understand her. If it is what you suspect then tell her you find it insulting and rude.

Mojavewonderer · 25/08/2013 21:34

Haha bowlersarm maybe I should ;)

OP posts:
exexpat · 25/08/2013 21:36

Did you and the DCs come as a package, ie you had them before you met your DH? In which case it is incredibly rude of them (though they may just think they are being witty, or may be intentionally rude) and both you and your DH should tell them how rude it is.
