To think apologising for spelling mistakes in a post is over the top

We're all on phones, gadgets, laptops and the like. We might be typing and feeding a bub with the other hand. Lets hope no one is driving and typing...... But please, AIBU to think that no one cares if you get some letters wrong or do a typo. Stop clogging up threads with apologies.

OP posts:
seventiesgirl · 25/08/2013 14:48

I'd rather clog up a thread than have people think I can't spell. Smile

MultumInParvo · 25/08/2013 14:48

Yabu. Use correct grammar and spelling, then there is no need to apologise.

Sorry Wink

AnyoneButLulu · 25/08/2013 14:54

I agree OP, unless an autocorrect has made gibberish of a post (eg "not" for "now"), or it's a post on the subject of correct SPAG, I grit my teeth and let them go, it strikes me as solipsistic and insecure to correct every little typo.

Tee2072 · 25/08/2013 14:56

Hey I have an idea! Preview the message before posting and correct mistakes!

And before people go 'but I'm on a phone' it's possible to edit even on a phone.

Honkyponk · 25/08/2013 14:57

Exactly Anyone. Although I just had to look up solipsistic and I still don't understand what it means.

OP posts:
usualsuspect · 25/08/2013 14:59

If I've made a glaring error , I will correct it.

I dunno why though because I don't give a toss about other posters spelling mistakes.

usualsuspect · 25/08/2013 15:00

I haven't got time to preview every post when I'm in mid flow.

ShellyBoobs · 25/08/2013 15:04

I think people apologise as they realise how difficult it is to read some posts on MN, so they appreciate people's perseverance in continuing to read.

PS, you seem to have spelled 'baby' completely incorrectly.

limitedperiodonly · 25/08/2013 15:13

It's not necessary, but if apologising makes them happy, I don't mind.

I point out mistakes only in posts whining about the appalling standards of others. I can't resist.

ShellyBoobs · 25/08/2013 15:15

Oops - the Grin is missing from my last post.

I agree with the OP and was thinking this very thing yesterday. If it's a case of the phone inserting an entirely wrong word to the point of the meaning being obscured, then it makes sense. But every little spelling error? It just causes more bother than necessary.

Hassled · 25/08/2013 15:29

But if I leave the spelling mistake alone people might think I'm thick, and we can't be having that Wink.

I tried to stop - but just couldn't sit on my hands that awful night I typed "their" when I meant "there". I have stopped correcting my own mistakes in bold though. That's my compromise.

usualsuspect · 25/08/2013 15:36

There have been a couple of threads started, slagging off spelling mistakes on here in the last couple of days.

It's no wonder posters feel the need to correct their mistakes considering all the teeth itching and angst their mistakes cause the spelling police.

Tee2072 · 25/08/2013 16:11

And the grammar police, Usual.

And I don't preview either. I just hate other people telling me how to post. Oh wait...

Ezza1 · 25/08/2013 16:15

yanbu - spelling mistakes don't bother me in the slightest and its tiresome to read corrections.

I do love a few good funny autocorrects though and the horrified correction that follows Grin

insancerre · 25/08/2013 16:15

YANBU
I can spell and use grammar.
But, sometimes I make typos, lots of them. It doesn't help that my keyboard is wireless and seems to enjoy missing out odd random letters, every now and then.
I do correct tham as I go along, sometimes , but most times I am too caught up in the moment of putting my views across that I just don't care about spelling and such.

They take my breath away, because not only do we all make mistakes, they usually contain more than most. It's just mean - not to mention asking for it Grin

When you I come over all Grammar Special Branch on them they always say: 'Oh, but I have a different style of posting on the internet.'

How does that work? Like there's something about Mumsnet that makes you forget how to spell and use commas and apostrophes and that, but when you're at work you're suddenly John Betjeman?

LyraSilvertongue · 25/08/2013 20:05

Sometimes autocorrect on my iPhone will insert errors into a sentence and I feel I need to correct it in another post (if I haven't noticed before posting) so people don't think I'm an idiot.

Changebagsandgladrags · 25/08/2013 20:11

I once made a spelling mistake here. Someone pulled me up on it. But I can spell bitch-troll-from-hell.

usualsuspect · 25/08/2013 20:23

Posters who pull other posters up on their spelling mistakes really are twats.

limitedperiodonly · 25/08/2013 20:32

I've pulled up other posters on their spelling mistakes.

Therefore I am a twat. Really.

AnyoneButLulu · 25/08/2013 21:18

Every now and then I feel the need to let people know that (eg) it's not "persay" it's "per se" purely on the grounds that it's better to hear it from a random internetter than from your senior manager checking a vital letter you've just sent. Anyone can misspell or mistype something but sometimes people are simply under a misapprehension that nobody's ever bothered to enlighten them on. I wouldn't bother if their posts were otherwise awash with mispellings and txtspk, or it might have been a typo.

limitedperiodonly · 25/08/2013 21:39

Someone once used in conversation the correct pronunciation of the word 'reprise' shortly after I'd said 'repr-EYE-ze'.

I am grateful for the correction but there is a small part of me that will forever think of him: 'cunt.'

Not as bad as the woman who laughed out loud when I said: 'gam-OOT' instead of 'GAMM-ut'.

It took some time, but I had my revenge.

Awomansworth · 25/08/2013 21:49

I spend most of my time on MN on special needs boards. I do sometimes venture over to AIBU though.

My perception is that there are certain traditions and sayings on MN - naice ham, LTB, correcting spelling mistakes, Biscuit , that some feel the need to keep up and some (me included) don't give fuck.

I make typos sometimes... who cares.

usualsuspect · 25/08/2013 21:53

I've only ever corrected someones spelling on here once.

She insulted me with 'your a belend'
