AIBU?

To point out there is no such word as ALOT

A. Lot. Two words. Simples!

Maybe I'm a bit of a grammar and spelling Nazi. I know its easy to make errors on Facebook, forums etc. I don't continuously correct other peoples spelling and its easy to make errors when you are typing quickly. I usually post via my phone so am using a predictive text app that can sometimes make some howlers. But a lot is not difficult to get right. It's not long or complicated, and doesn't even need and kind of memory aide to remember (anyone recall one coffee two sugars, or big elephants can always understand small elephants). And SO MANY people seem to think it's one word??

offering restbite from the hard ground! I'm still debating whether to contact them asking for a respite from their advertising

I do shudder a bit at the "10 items or less" sign in my local supermarket. I really want to tell the manager it should be "10 items or fewer" or "Fewer than 10 items" but I think she'd look at me as if I were a loon.

of course you need to let of steam if things annoy you, but tbf it is just the internet it is a forum for people to type on it isn't an English lecture and some people really don't realise that their grammar and use of English is so bad that it offends people

upthechimney you are obviously better educated than I am I didn't know it is meant to be fewer and not less

mrsjay I can't speak for everyone else, but I don't go round commenting on r correcting people's posts in random threads! Just in this thread and one I started specifically about "text/texted." So I don't think accusing me of making this an English lecture is fair.

But < thinks further > why is learning from interactions on an internet forum a bad thing? I learn lots here, not English lectures, because that's my profession, but loads of other stuff. I'm ignorant about lots of things, and I learn a lot by interacting with others via the internet, as well as RL. I go to cooking classes, and learn a language at night school.

What's so problematic about you learning about the language you speak, write, and read? Isn't education is a good thing, and learning from others is a gift and a thing to be valued?

'Fora' is a bit silly. I'm not even sure it's correct.

of course learning is wonderful I have learned a lot from using forums but a random word on the internet I don't understand why it riles people so much, if it riles you it riles you ( i mean the general you) , it really means that people are picking at posts and not reading the content , imo

and the english language is always changing and people use words that are not correct all the time, I would say forums not fora most people use words like that, they will say text instead of texted,

My current pet peeve is 'would of'. Guilty: my 6 and 4 yearold children. I find lots of their little mistakes cute but NOT THIS ONE.

It makes me laugh alot when people loose there rag because other people get there grammer wrong.

I like it when people write "alot" because it gives me an excuse to link the cartoon that TheCuntingPigeon showed you right at the very top.

Shelly I hope you know that was a joke

You know, I always thought it was one word. I might campaign for it to be added to the dictionary. That would sort you pedants out ;)

I've never noticed anyone using alot instead of a lot. I probably would have assumed it was a typo.

I can normally read past "would of", although it's irritating, but my pet hates are people who use brought when they mean bought and "chest of draws".

There is actually a pedants' corner on MN.

I know some folk never leave AIBU though.
So I'm being pedantic and staying use the correct topic please.

however you can say allotted Smile

Lweji · 23/08/2013 11:29

Yes, but if these threads go to pedants' corner the people making the mistakes will never learn. Grin

And why should be writing well in a given language be considered pedantic?
