To point out there is no such word as ALOT

A. Lot. Two words. Simples!

Maybe I'm a bit of a grammar and spelling Nazi. I know its easy to make errors on Facebook, forums etc. I don't continuously correct other peoples spelling and its easy to make errors when you are typing quickly. I usually post via my phone so am using a predictive text app that can sometimes make some howlers. But a lot is not difficult to get right. It's not long or complicated, and doesn't even need and kind of memory aide to remember (anyone recall one coffee two sugars, or big elephants can always understand small elephants). And SO MANY people seem to think it's one word??

I was considering it Buskerscat. And also quivering in a corner waiting for someone to point out I had misspelled Meerkat. The irony!

*knew. Who knew. Dammit. Hangs head in shame.

Thank you gets me too. Oh, and too and to. Lose and loose. Complimentary and complementary. All good suggestions.

Although I will forgive stationary and stationery, cos I think that's more difficult.

There are so many more, and now I can't think of a single one!

I am afraid you are all wrong, there is definitely such a thing as an alot, and they make my whole internet forum experience much more amusing.

Ladies, I give you this

fackinell · 22/08/2013 11:50

I have actually deleted someone from FB for poor Grammar, I've had to silence another.

Wot and Wen make me particularly stabby, followed by n (as in 'me n Joe'.)

Arghhh! Angry

complexnumber · 22/08/2013 11:50

I also hate to see 'alot' the red squiggle as they type ought to give people a clue.

But I do have a weakness, I often write 'each other' as one word.

SellbyDate · 22/08/2013 11:54

I spend a lot of time going back over my posts putting a little space between a & lot. Please can you acknowledge my efforts and say thank you. It is a frustrating task and I only do it to appease the pedants. (and my own little inner pedant)

Is there an alternative word that could be used?

DropYourSword · 22/08/2013 11:54

pigeon and kate - I didn't think this was possible, but you have given me a new found love for Alots!

OP posts:
DropYourSword · 22/08/2013 11:59

sellbydate I hereby applaud your initiative and thank you for taking the time to correct your alots!

I shall try to think of alternatives.

I like it alot - I really like it.

I am alot better at running - I am much better at running

I smile alot - I'm super duper smiley

I see alot of knife wielding spiders charging towards me - I'm tripping my tits off right now

Are you my English teacher!

Every time I write "A lot" I think of him banging the board and shouting "You'd never write afew would you?"

Montybojangles · 22/08/2013 12:07

I think u are making alot of fuss about nothing on principal. I guess I should of listened more Closer wen I was in skool. Who new it could of bothered people so much. Simples :)

DidoTheDodo · 22/08/2013 12:09

I can't bear to see all right as alright.
Drummed into me by my English teacher in the years when it really counted for something.

Wildmeanfairlyhipkid · 22/08/2013 12:10

"Hence why" is my pet grammar hate.

HouseAtreides · 22/08/2013 12:16

What's wrong with forever? Confused

Lweji · 22/08/2013 12:19

Nothing.
For ever instead of forever, on the other hand...

Gullygirl · 22/08/2013 12:20

My autocorrect, which has embarrassed me in the past, will not allow me to type "a lot" as one word.
My absolute pet hate is....anywho.

Gullygirl · 22/08/2013 12:21

Or should it be spelled anyhoo?

cardamomginger · 22/08/2013 12:21

Fuck. Really? Blush

RiceBurner · 22/08/2013 12:24

I hate ALOT ASWELL!

ilovesooty · 22/08/2013 12:36

YANBU.

I'd add discreet and discrete and phrases confusing the use of I and me.

The one that really annoys me most though is 'I seen', 'he done' or variants of these.

Sallyingforth · 22/08/2013 12:39

Not to mention 'fed up of'

WeAreEternal · 22/08/2013 12:41

This is a massive pet peeve of mine.

Along will allsorts, aswell, abit.

and people who don't know the difference between,
definitely and defiantly.
your and you're.
Where, we're and were.
Their, there and they're.
Affect and effect.
To, two and too.
The list goes on.

It's not rocket science and it drives me loopy.

Buzzardbird · 22/08/2013 12:43

I have only just realised the difference between 'sentence' and 'sentance' as I was trying to check up on someone Blush. My auto-incorrect tells me there is no such word as 'sentance' which is not helping

DropYourSword · 22/08/2013 13:26

Oooh, oooh, .....irregardless!

And my partner mixes up "it really grinds my gears" with "it really gets my goat" and ends up the the snigger-inducing "it really grinds my goat"!

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 22/08/2013 13:41

conantg · 22/08/2013 13:49

Errr Buzzardbird... there IS no such word as sentance...
