Come here please and tell me why my actions were extravagant [Warning: incredibly DULL op, you have been warned]

I purchased a bargain rolled shoulder of lamb earlier in the week, just the right size to feed the four of us. I got the butcher (supermarket) to cut it into two pieces.

Dh and Dd only like lamb in the slow cooker with the gravy. I much prefer roasted and slightly pink. Ds really likes both.

Hence the two pieces. So one went in the slow cooker. The other smaller bit in the oven with the potatoes and parsnips.

Family member had asked what we were having or dinner and I said. She tutted and said it was very extravagant and a waste to have two joints.

I went Confused and changed the subject.

Now clearly, because I am on Mumsnet too much, I am DETERMINED to work out why this was extravagant, but I can't. Admittedly by using the Slow Cooker too I used a tiny bit more electricity. That's it.

It was the same size piece I'd use or the four of us in the slow cooker, or in the oven. Initially family member was Envy when I told her what the lamb cost. Till I told her I'd chopped it in two.

So, if you are still with me, and not glazed with boredom can you tell me my offence please?

Thank you Thanks

Ivykaty, it might be that, yes. But chucking one piece of meat in the slow cooker and the other in the oven and ignoring them isn't exactly taxing. And technically I was indulging myself too.

I suspect she thought you had bought 2 times joints that served four people each.

Sensible use of meat. Slow cooker = pennies. Ridiculous argument to say extravagant. I made 4 different teas the other day for five. She would have needed a lie down in my house Hmm.

Tee2072 · 18/08/2013 19:15

Ah but did you make 2 veg?

HoneyDragon · 18/08/2013 19:19

Tbf, it hadn't occurred to me she might of got confused and thought two large joints were involved. Perhaps I should clarify at a later date in case she thinks we are blowing our savings on unnecessary meat products?

She definitely would pass out in my house. We have about 6 veg and sometimes I do do roast and mash!

nokidshere · 18/08/2013 19:31

Me and DS2 just had wonderful pan fried lamb steaks (reduced to 20p - bargain!) so we had the hob on for them plus potatoes and veg. DS1 had cold vegetarian plate of something or other and Vegetarian DH had the oven, microwave and hob all going at the same time for his concoction!!!!

So no crime committed from what I read lol

Tee2072 · 18/08/2013 20:27

FOUR! You...you...you...something really bad!

Next time you see her, tell her that after you'd cooked it, you all decided you just didn't fancy it that night and you went out and got a takeaway instead and put the meat in the bin. She'll spontaneously combust.Grin

DropYourSword · 19/08/2013 15:38

Is it just me that wants to go to Honeydragons for dinner?!

HoneyDragon · 19/08/2013 19:34

Jan49 Grin that might kill her.

I've just realised I actually did 5 vegetables, I had some left over red cabbage in the freezer too.

To a certain generation a joint is the basis for a meal no matter what the size. It will feed however many people it needs to feed, you just stretch it with Yorkshires, roasties and veg. If that means that every person gets a piece of meat the size of a 50p then so be it, you only cook one joint.

So cutting a joint for 4 into 2 pieces means you now have 2 joints for 4 and just need more veg. And should have leftovers. I have read wartime cookbooks, you would be expected to cook a 1/2lb shoulder of lamb and feed 4 people with enough left over for another meal the next day.

Sorry, my point is that your Aunt may have been brought up by war remembering parents (or poor parents), and those lessons arent easy to forget.
