Come here please and tell me why my actions were extravagant [Warning: incredibly DULL op, you have been warned]

I purchased a bargain rolled shoulder of lamb earlier in the week, just the right size to feed the four of us. I got the butcher (supermarket) to cut it into two pieces.

Dh and Dd only like lamb in the slow cooker with the gravy. I much prefer roasted and slightly pink. Ds really likes both.

Hence the two pieces. So one went in the slow cooker. The other smaller bit in the oven with the potatoes and parsnips.

Family member had asked what we were having or dinner and I said. She tutted and said it was very extravagant and a waste to have two joints.

I went Confused and changed the subject.

Now clearly, because I am on Mumsnet too much, I am DETERMINED to work out why this was extravagant, but I can't. Admittedly by using the Slow Cooker too I used a tiny bit more electricity. That's it.

It was the same size piece I'd use or the four of us in the slow cooker, or in the oven. Initially family member was Envy when I told her what the lamb cost. Till I told her I'd chopped it in two.

So, if you are still with me, and not glazed with boredom can you tell me my offence please?

Thank you Thanks

You put the oven on when you didn't need to. And the oven wasn't full to the brim. That's what my mum thinks anyway :)

LRDPomogiMnyeSRabotoi · 18/08/2013 18:37

Clearly, you are pandering to your family's desires and should be forcing them all to eat something they dislike. This early experience will teach them the hedonistic pleasures of lamb done to their taste and is the first step on the way to crack addiction.

I'm just thinking what a great idea.

MoaningMingeWhingesAgain · 18/08/2013 18:37

I would argue - it's not two joints, it's one cut in half, so NER.

Offence - pandering to differing wishes on how it's cooked.

Not guilty - because you mostly did the two to pander to your own preferences, which is your privilege as the chef.

dopeysheep · 18/08/2013 18:38

I think she thought you had bought two joints not chopped one.in half?
I like it roasted as well but not with soapy tasting rosemary. Redcurrant jelly all the way yum.

ChippingInHopHopHop · 18/08/2013 18:39

But you didn't have 2 joints Grin You had one, cooked in two different ways... (lucky family that you cater to them like that!!) I think your family member doesn't quite understand fractions Grin

HoneyDragon · 18/08/2013 18:40

Spotty, the big oven had to be used for roast potatoes, parsnips and Yorkshire pudding. So no flagrant oven useage, promise Grin

Lordy, she would have had a conniption fit if she'd been at mine - we had Roast Chicken AND slow roast leg of lamb!

HoneyDragon · 18/08/2013 18:43

LRD, you might be onto something with the possible future cocaine use. The same family member once expressed concern at letting dd have a sparkly umbrella in her apple juice as it would set her on the road to alcoholism.

I don't mean this as catty as it sounds...You really must be grateful if this is the most worriesome thing in your life today.
Just forget about it. I find irrational people quite amusing, really.

HoneyDragon · 18/08/2013 18:43

Lorelilee Shock!

Your offence is not extravagance, it's giving your family a choice.

Your children will be ruined, for ever!

Jan49 · 18/08/2013 18:45

I think she thinks it's extravagant to cook one meal in 2 different ways to please different people instead of doing it all as one. You should have all eaten it cooked in the same way for the sake of 20p of electricity that you would save and to avoid overindulging your family and their whims. Smile

HoneyDragon · 18/08/2013 18:46

Lljkk Grin

It's ok, I'm not worried, and am amused. As I said in the op, I just wanted a good Mumsnet reason why I am a blatant roast dinner hussy.

I promise, I save my 3am wakings for proper worries and concerns.

HoneyDragon · 18/08/2013 18:47

But then I would have to put it to the vote how to cook it and I would lose Sad

McNewPants2013 · 18/08/2013 18:47

Omg lamb cooked 2 way, imagine having roast and boiled potato

thornrose · 18/08/2013 18:48

I must've missed the memo! Is Mumsnet only for serious worries?

Does posting about trivia mean you have nothing else going on in your life?

HoneyDragon · 18/08/2013 18:49

I do mas and roasts sometimes (hedonist)

Umbrellas lead to alcoholism?

The mind boggles.

I'm really fancying roast lamb now, and I've already been out for Sunday lunch with DH. Damn.

ginmakesitallok · 18/08/2013 18:52

This is just a stealth boast - 2 joints!!!!!

Grin
McNewPants2013 · 18/08/2013 18:52

My mind can't compute mash and roast potato surely that's a typo

I don't think this comment was about money - but I think Op sees the comment as a money thing.

It is about becoming a slave to the kitchen and cooking two meals as two people like it cooked one way and the others like it cooked another way. I know parents that cook different meals for different members of the family to suit all tastes.

if you want to set yourself up as chef cook and bottle washer then you go right ahead

HoneyDragon · 18/08/2013 18:54

Maryz. It's rolled shoulder, you trim it to suit. They are still joints, just smaller you weirdo Grin

OP posts:
Floggingmolly · 18/08/2013 18:54

Grin at "two joints". It reminds me of my little brother years ago, howling when mum cut his green beans into small pieces for him "what did you do that for? I hate them and now you've made MORE!!!!'"

McNewPants2013 · 18/08/2013 18:54

I bet the juices from the slow cooker made a lovely gravy
