To think if I cancel a December Egypt holiday now they should refund my flights

We had all booked for Cairo this December but are getting concerned about the civil unrest there. Travel company say they will refund for the hotel but not the flight. Are they allowed to do this?

Check your booking terms and conditions.

BrokenSunglasses · 16/08/2013 17:44

Your travel insurance should cover it if the advice from the foreign office is not to travel.

Arnie123 · 16/08/2013 17:45

We don't have insurance

Oops. Bet you will on next one.

They may offer rebook in a set time frame but aren't as an obligation to. Basically if the plane flies its YOUR choice to go or not.

If they cancel to protect their staff that's different.

KissMeHardy · 16/08/2013 17:51

If you don't have insurance.....well.....you're a bit buggered I think.

BrokenSunglasses · 16/08/2013 17:52

Travel companies often have to pay for the flight as soon as it's booked to secure your seat on the plane, so maybe that's what they have done here.

Maybe ABTA will be able to help if your TO is registered with them.

Yonionekanobe · 16/08/2013 17:52

Insurance is your only option if the flight is still scheduled. Some holiday companies are apparently cancelling packages though. Who are you booked through?

ChimeForChange · 16/08/2013 17:53

Would insurance even be valid because you would have known about the unrest before you booked?
Unless you booked ages ago.

We had to cancel a holiday. ....the fees for even changing the dates were horrendous.

I sold it to someone on Gumtree!

Arnie123 · 16/08/2013 17:55

Southall travel

BeauNatt · 16/08/2013 17:56

Ha. YABU sorry.

Arnie123 · 16/08/2013 17:56

If they won't refund we will just go anyway and hope for the best

Would they let you transfer your flights to another location?

Bowlersarm · 16/08/2013 18:01

Rather you than me. Aren't they now recommending only essential travel?

ohN0Whatnext · 16/08/2013 18:02

That quote should be remembered " We had all booked for Cairo this December but are getting concerned about the civil unrest there. If they won't refund we will just go anyway and HOPE FOR THE BEST"

Well...let's hope you don't get the worst, because there will be nothing worse that can happen to you. Have a nice holiday and remember to buy your duty free.

Bowlersarm · 16/08/2013 18:03

Isn't it Cairo where all the people are currently being killed?? How is it possible to go on holiday there? Madness.

'Hope for the best' only really works if you're worried about a rainy day out at a theme park. I'm not sure it's the wisest option when the army are slaughtering people in the streets Hmm.

StuntGirl · 16/08/2013 18:07

Well you're obviously not that bothered if you're thinking of going anyway and hoping for the best!

TSSDNCOP · 16/08/2013 18:09

You're surely not serious? Are you taking kids? I've just re-booked Sharm even though the FO still has it on green. I don't think anyone sane would consider outside the Red Sea resorts.

FrauMoose · 16/08/2013 18:11

Suggest consulting www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/egypt
and also the small print of your travel arrangements

gordyslovesheep · 16/08/2013 18:20

oh just chance it - remember to pack a good quality bullet proof vest, gas mask and tin hat

yabu to consider going IF things are still this awful and you are insane not to have insurance

FrauMoose · 16/08/2013 18:23

The holiday company I last traveled with has this on their website

"The UK Foreign Office continues to advise against all but essential travel to most of Egypt. Consequently we have taken the decision to cancel all ....tours due to depart up to 31st December. Our Reservations team will be contacting customers due to depart within this period to discuss transferring their bookings.
Moving forward we will be reviewing the situation in Egypt on a weekly basis."

dexter73 · 16/08/2013 18:25

Tbh if you took out insurance now to travel to Cairo it would be horrendously expensive, if you could even get it.

Turniptwirl · 16/08/2013 18:26

Yabu not to have insurance

Yabu to consider going, surely the holiday can't have cost so much that to lose the money is worse than losing your lives
