So the other weekend I took dd and her friend (both 13) to go ape. The trainer started talking to her friend and said where are you from and she answered Wigan. The woman then asked where her parents are from and she said she didn't know about her dad and the woman went oh you don't know himConfused well she does

It looks like you've not finished your OP Grin

Was your DDs friend saying she didn't know where her dad was from and the trainer presumed she meant she didn't know who her dad was?

Tiny bit confused.

TheFallenNinja · 16/08/2013 02:15

BelieveinWigan · 16/08/2013 02:18

MollyBerry · 16/08/2013 02:31

This sounds like something that could have been corrected really simply with 'oh no. I do, I just don't know where he's from'.

She made a bit of a judgy assumption but it wasn't the worst thing I've ever heard

MollyBerry · 16/08/2013 02:32

Is Wigan relevant? Would it not be offensive if she was from Exeter?

AgentZigzag · 16/08/2013 02:34

How did I miss the Cake being introduced?? Shock

No 'AIBU to think MNHQ have gone too far this time with the annoying emoticons?' threads?

AgentZigzag · 16/08/2013 02:36

Hehe, just seen the surprised face looks like it's angling for a bite of that nice moist looking jam sponge Cake Shock

Nospringchickendipper · 16/08/2013 02:53

AgentZigzag I thought it looked like a slice of chocolate cake.

Turniptwirl · 16/08/2013 06:42

Overreact much?

Famzilla · 16/08/2013 06:45

I don't see the problem really.

I wish I had some cake.

Morgause · 16/08/2013 06:48
Cake

Here you go, Famzilla

coralanne · 16/08/2013 07:06

I kind of understand what you mean. I used to work in a medical practice where the Dr. in charge took over from another one who had retired after 30 years.

The original Dr. was Russian and the new Doc was originally from Sri Lanka.

Almost every patient asked "Where is the Dr. from?". Very innocently I would reply

Öh he's from London"", knowing full well they were referring to the colour of his skin.

Makes me wonder if your DD's friend had a different cooured skin?? Maybe I am wrong but I know from experience that people automatically ask where you are from if your skin is a different colour.

No one ever asked where the Russian Doc was from because he looked English

Ogg · 16/08/2013 09:22

What's the problem with somone wanting to know where the doctor is from? are we allowed no curiosity because someone is black or asian? If people were saying I'm not being treated by a foreigner that would be offensive - wanting to know where somone is from is just natural curiosity

Ogg · 16/08/2013 09:24

Oh and no one ever asked where the Russian doctor was from when they heard his accent or do you only treat linguists?

perplexedpirate · 16/08/2013 10:51

Why do you have to know where your father is from to go down a zip line.
Proper confused with this.

coralanne · 16/08/2013 11:50

Ogg I understand what you are saying.

I guess you have to be in the situation where you can actually see the suspicion in someone's eyes and hear the doubt in their voice.

One patient actually asked where the Dr. had obtained his medical degree. I almost answered "From a packet of cornflakes" but decided against it.Smile

Regarding the accent, both Drs. spoke the "Queen's English" but the Russian Dr. was never quizzed about his origins.

coralanne · 16/08/2013 11:53

Why would you be curious about someone just because they were black or Asian?

If wanting to know where someone was from is natural, then we would spend all day asking every single person we meet up with asking them where they came from.

Ogg · 16/08/2013 15:00

Coralanne - because he/she a big part of the local community ? One of our Dr's is Chinese origin but with an Australian accent - bloody fabulous Dr - but yes did attract some gossip in a a small welsh town practice. So shoot us. ;P - I do agree 'where did they do their degree' is bordering on unacceptable but can also understand peoples anxiety to be honest to a degree.

ViviPru · 16/08/2013 15:05

This is like a Vic & Bob sketch. But a bad one. Confused
