the girls singing the song at the end.

especially the girl who was a carer to her mother and helped with childcare and couldn't afford the concert ticket.

aibu, made me cry a little.

Yes jamdonut I love the White Stripes and Jack White I have everything they have ever done and I subscribe to Jacks record label, but I was in my mid 20s when the White Stripes first started and I'm in my mid 30s now, I think this level of obsession is unique to some teenage girls, I was never like that but I do get being a massive fan of a band.

FreyaSnow · 16/08/2013 09:52

Both of mine are at mixed sex schools. One is twelve and the other fifteen. They both have only friends of the same gender.

I am finding this thread quite eye opening in terms of generational divides and ideas around compulsory homosexuality being the norm and ideal.

I don't have a one direction fan in my family but we are all fans of various things. I was suggesting to my colleague the other day that pretty much everyone is now a geek. Clearly some people still aren't from this thread and are still judgemental.

mrsjay · 16/08/2013 09:55

there is being fans and being unhealthy obsessed with a band and these girls were obsessed and not just crushing on a postar, I don't think it is doing those girls anygood

FreyaSnow · 16/08/2013 10:08

Ultimately it is a reality tv show. It reflects a. parents who would allow their teenagers to appear on the show and b. the ethics of the media company who cut it in such a way and exposed those girls. We know very little about the lives of the girls at all, what they do the rest of the time etc.

We do know they all have plenty of friends (each other) and they are literate (reading or writing fan fiction) and are able to use the Internet to communicate with people from other countries and very different social backgrounds. This is no bad thing and are often skills and relationships they can keep when they leave that particular fandom behind and move on to new interests when either the band ends or the fans' interests change.

There is no way I would let either of my kids on any kind of reality show. I certainly wouldn't let them on one about fannish interests, unless it was one I knew would be created in a sympathetic way with insight like the recent comic con movie.

JerseySpud · 16/08/2013 10:12

I'm denying that there will be worse out in 6 years

Its the only way i can deal with the fact i have 2 girls that will inevitably end up being obsessed with boy bands. Unless i can steer them in the same direction as me and their dad. Sci Fi.

WillyandTig · 16/08/2013 10:14

Yeah, definitely not just crushes. They want to murder their girlfriends! And the little girl who acted out punching if she saw one of the gfs in the street? If anything, 1D will be upping security now Grin

SouthernComforts · 16/08/2013 10:15

It's not just teenage girls.

The Killers fans 'victims' are insane. Grown adults camped outside Wembley for days recently.

I love my music, but not enough to shit in a bag for 3 days.

mrsjay · 16/08/2013 10:19

I remember watching a take that thing maybe the reunion show they did and they had to Up their security the loons- girls were breaking into hotel rooms and shimming up drainpipes to get to them , one of them said he had a girl get into his room when he was not there she was hiding in the bathroom Shock uberfans are scary

mrsjay · 16/08/2013 10:21

it is isn't just music those twihards (is that right) were are fruitloops

WillyandTig · 16/08/2013 10:28

Oh god yeah twihards! Its a bit worrying really! I feel kind of sorry for them. That girl last night who said when she feels sad she thinks of 1D and feels better made me wonder where do non-obsessed teens get that feeling from and why is she relying on a band who don't know she exists for it? Its sad :(

OctopusPete8 · 16/08/2013 10:28

Did anyone see that Graham Norton show when girls came on coach trips from Germany or flew from Japan to see him???....

Grown Wimmin''!!! Shock

GhostsInSnow · 16/08/2013 10:57

I missed it, we'll have to watch it on catch up. Dd is a fan (15) however, she's a secret fan. ...

She's a big metal fan, loves black veil brides, 30 seconds to Mars etc. She has bright red hair, dresses alternatively and has a secret passion for 1d. I find it amusing. I'm taking her to see them next year (yes, probably do need my head read) but she's so excited. I just don't understand why she had to keep her liking of them a secret lol

ImNotBloody14 · 16/08/2013 10:58

you know what, i'd bet my mum wishes I had still had boyband posters on my bedroom wall and played TT all around the house at all hours at 19.

at 19 I had a druggy ex, a baby, a house and a full time job. I bet she was wishing I hadn't grown up so fast.

Reastie · 16/08/2013 11:19

OK, I had to record this show as I had a brief teenage moment of, ahem, following around a very popular at the time boyband. I'm only 10 mins in to the docu. My goodness I'm glad twitter wasn't around when I was a teen as I would have been even more obsessed if that's possible . I remember I used to ring up said boybands record company/promotional company and had 'contacts' who used to tell me where they'd be when. Honestly, 95% of the people I met during this time of my life had issues and were very bitchy and nice to my face and rude behind it. Very fair weathered friends (ie would only be nice to me if I had info they wanted/thought they could get something from me). I'm no longer in contact with any of them needless to say! I had self confidence issues and thought if I could meet these famous people people would like me by association Confused . It also was a bit like a drug - you get addicted to wanting to see them everywhere and feel great after you manage it and want to see them the most from everyone else and be special/known by the band. I don't know it was a strange teenage thing I did and I'm very Blush about it. I was never screamy or anything though and I do tell myself at leat it was all harmless fun and I wasn't out getting drunk and high. Those poor boys...

cushtie335 · 16/08/2013 13:21

My DNs were Bros fanatics. I think if Twitter had been around then, they woudl have suffered similar obsessional fandom as 1D currently do. The Brosettes were nasty pieces of work, they would turn on other "Brosettes" if they got closer to the band than they did and there were a lot of threats and violence in the queues waiting to see them if anyone got ideas above their station.

WithaPickleOnTop · 16/08/2013 14:52

Did anyone see the evil looks given when the other girl was showing photos of when she had met them all. If looks could kill she would be six feet under.

damppatchnot · 16/08/2013 19:26

I loved Donny Osmond and cried when he got married then as a teen liked Nick Heywood Shock but not like that lot. Obsessed would be putting it lightly

CommanderShepard · 16/08/2013 19:56

I was neither pretty nor popular at school but hot damn I still didn't get obsessive about boy bands! I mean, I liked some songs and stuff and I did think Jason Orange was all that and a box of socks for a while but I never went to a concert or ran around after them.

I find it pretty fascinating from an academic point of view, especially factoring in social networking. I wonder if there's research?

mrsjay · 16/08/2013 21:10

I find it amusing. I'm taking her to see them next year (yes, probably do need my head read) but she's so excited. I just don't understand why she had to keep her liking of them a secret lol

DD is 20 a very cool music engineer student all indie bands blah blah but ive seen 1D on her ipod Grin

TedMoseby · 16/08/2013 21:19

I felt sorry for the girl who was a carer. Also, the thing that really struck me was the fact that these poor boys are quite clearly ordered by their record label to publish everything about themselves online. It has moved that harmful crush on popstars from past years to a dangerous obsession where you can be connected, but not really connected to them iyswim, all the time.

toboldlygo · 16/08/2013 22:03

The homoerotic thing isn't remotely new, it started in the 70s in the Star Trek fandom. Teenagers have always been perverts. Grin

x2boys · 17/08/2013 21:03

the smiths I loved bloody morrisey shame nobody else did
