to walk out of a cinema due to the volume?

Is it just me or are the volumes far too loud? We went to see Despicable Me 2 this morning at a Cineworld cinema. Made it through the tedious number of adverts - so far so good - but were then blown away by a huge increase in volume when the film started. Several hours later, my ears are still ringing and we only stayed 15 minutes. My DD's had their fingers in their ears.

The member of staff we complained to, said that it was the normal volume. We went to see something else (can't remember what) a month or so ago and it was fine. What's happening? We did get a full refund but only because we insisted on it.

Surely this can't be legal to impose that kind of volume on people, particularly the children that such a film is aimed at.

Or am I just old?

If nobody else in the cinema found it uncomfortably loud, I wonder if perhaps you have temporarily sensitive hearing. Any ear ache, or tinnitus in recent weeks?

twistyfeet · 12/08/2013 15:02

yanbu. I find most cineamas now far too loud and have noticed it over the last few years. I just asumed people are deafer as they play music into their ears all the time. Some films are at painful levels so I've stopped going to the cinema Sad

ppeatfruit · 12/08/2013 15:03

fernieB YOU ARE BEING TOTALLY REASONABLE. Grin

No Shatners My hearing is perfect only because I DON'T go to the effing cinema regularly it's far too loud. It's crazy no wonder that lots of yoof are going deaf.

Emsmaman · 12/08/2013 15:09

YANBU I've walked out of a mum and baby cinema session before as it was sooo loud (I thought these sessions would be more baby friendly). The staff saw me leaving (mid morning so quiet) and I told them why, they turned down the volume slightly and I went back in to watch the rest of the film.

Sirzy · 12/08/2013 15:12

I can't say I have ever had a problem with the volume of a film. We go to see a lot of childrens films and TBH if they were quieter then people wouldn't be able to hear.

TantrumsAndBalloons · 12/08/2013 15:19

Surely it can't be legal to impose that kind of volume on anyone

That part confused me. They are not imposing it on you. You went to the cinema of your own free will.
They aren't piping despicable me at full volume into your house.

If it was too loud, so loud that your ears are ringing and your DDs had their fingers in their ears, maybe you are very sensitive to loud noises?
Did anyone else have the same issue?

Yes, the volume at the cinema is a lot louder than in your own home. But I have never had ringing ears afterwards or had to take my DCs out because they can't cope with it.
I would have thought of it was that loud, then everyone would have been complaining and leaving?

ppeatfruit · 12/08/2013 15:23

It's obviously a chicken and egg situation. Is it so loud because everyone's going deaf or are they going deaf because it's so loud?!!! Amazing that they turned it down for you Emsmaman Grin

kali110 · 12/08/2013 15:24

Think yabu.went to cineworld to dee it and didnt think it was too loud. Loved the film

lljkk · 12/08/2013 15:31

I always have to put tissue in my ears for cinema visits. And at children's discos. It baffles me why everyone else doesn't find it horrible. Yesterday the bass was vibrating the book I was reading at a children's party.

DS complained when we arrived but shrugged it off soon. Everyone else is INSANE, I tell you.

Oh, and I have hearing loss. Can't hear higher frequencies or low volumes well any more. I should be the least bothered, in theory.

ppeatfruit · 12/08/2013 15:40

Not everyone else lljkk !!!! Great minds! When I hear those small cars booming down the road I say to my DC's "there's a car of deaf people and if they're not deaf now they soon will be!!"

cantdoalgebra · 12/08/2013 15:46

YANBU - I find films in cinemas far too noisy as well. I wear earplugs if I have to go and I can STILL hear the sound perfectly well.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHopeful · 12/08/2013 15:50

YANBU I wear ear plugs at the cinema too.

Odd thing my hearing is rubbish, dh has hearing like a bat and doesn't feel the need for earplugs.

Nanny0gg · 12/08/2013 15:56

YANBU

I rarely go to the cinema these days, but when I do it's far too loud.

Hate it.

WorraLiberty · 12/08/2013 15:57

I always think they're a bit too loud tbh but no-one else I know does.

However, I went to see a film once that was much quieter and spent the whole time being distracted by people talking in loud whispers.

And don't even start me on the people who can't sit for 2hrs without munching their way through buckets of popcorn, Doritos and crisps etc...whilst slurping a bucket of coke.

It's like these people starve themselves all month and then go to the cinema to pig out.

fluffyraggies · 12/08/2013 16:03

YANBU.

Went to see Pacific Rim a couple of weeks ago and i honestly thought there'd been a mistake with the volume!

For the first 10 mins i sat there wondering if i was going to be able to stand it. Then i did get used to it. It was unnecessarily loud.

There was only 2 other people in there along with me and DH so perhaps they thought they needed to 'fill the room with noise'? Grin

fluffyraggies · 12/08/2013 16:05

worra DH and i make a point of going to see a film just before it disappears from the big screens precisely because we cant stand all the noisy buggers you get all round you if the place is full :)

Lanceolate · 12/08/2013 16:05

I used to find them REALLY LOUD as a teen but now I'm fine with it. I suspect it's my hearing getting worse rather than the cinema getting quieter.

WorraLiberty · 12/08/2013 16:10

I don't blame you fluffy!

Mouseyinmyhousey · 12/08/2013 16:13

Yanbu. I thought it was just me but I find the cinema too loud.

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 12/08/2013 16:16

I have found some of them really loud too! It probably depends where you go though.

PuppyMonkey · 12/08/2013 16:17

I think some of you just aren't suited to a cinema environment - better stick to DVDs at home. I like it loud and I'm proud. Grin

Zingy123 · 12/08/2013 16:19

We go all the time to the cinema and have never found the volume of the film a problem. The behaviour of ofhers yes - talking, slurping, crunching, rustling etc.

funnyossity · 12/08/2013 16:19

This happened to us this week same film, same chain. I put it down to my extra fussy child but it was v.loud for me too! I didn't ask for a refund darn it!

I am old.

Jan49 · 12/08/2013 17:07

I think cinemas are too loud, though not so loud that I'd have to leave. I don't think I'd want to take a small child for that reason.

I'm old too. But I could watch a film at a cinema from "over the hill" and it would still be loud.Wink

Fairylea · 12/08/2013 17:09
