to walk out of a cinema due to the volume?

Is it just me or are the volumes far too loud? We went to see Despicable Me 2 this morning at a Cineworld cinema. Made it through the tedious number of adverts - so far so good - but were then blown away by a huge increase in volume when the film started. Several hours later, my ears are still ringing and we only stayed 15 minutes. My DD's had their fingers in their ears.

The member of staff we complained to, said that it was the normal volume. We went to see something else (can't remember what) a month or so ago and it was fine. What's happening? We did get a full refund but only because we insisted on it.

Surely this can't be legal to impose that kind of volume on people, particularly the children that such a film is aimed at.

Or am I just old?

They are far too loud, too cold and not as dark as they used to be.

OP, YANBU! I went to see Thor when I was about 8 months pregnant with DD, and the music during the fight sequence at the end was so loud it made her jump ?? I was sitting there patting my bump soothingly and humming quietly (wasn't sitting next to anyone and no one else would have been able to hear over that racket). I thought I was going to have to leave but thankfully he beat Loki and it all calmed down a bit Smile

After that the mother and baby screenings I went to in the following year were a bit of a relief.

When I go to the cinema with my ds we usually plan it so that we take lunch in with us (discretely as you're usually not supposed to take your own food) and we usually eat sandwiches during the film. Mostly it's an early afternoon showing. We also take fruit in a Tupperware box, which enables us to feel superior to the people stuffing themselves with popcorn.Grin So it's not extra food, it's just a normal lunch but eaten whilst seeing a film.

Pigsmummy · 12/08/2013 21:37

The batman film was so loud that I was worried for my unborn baby. She kicked a lot and I went to loo until she calmed down. Really loud, no need for it.

mymatemax · 12/08/2013 21:39

I completely agree, they are soooo loud. I hate the cinema!

NoComet · 12/08/2013 21:44

I love the cinema, my hearings awful and it's the one place I can actually hear the dialogue and the DDs can't turn it down.

However, I do agree that the sound effects and music are too load and I really object to pay to watch so many ads.

If you don't like the associated joys that come with movie watching in the cinema, do what I do and responsibly find alternative viewing apparatus ahem Grin

ppeatfruit · 13/08/2013 10:20

I reckon that the shares in the hearing aid companies are or will be going sky high that's where to put your money if you've got any to spare Grin.

Eating ok, but sounding like a donkey with a sack of carrots is not ok. In ye olden days it was hotdogs (relatively quiet). Last time I sat behind a woman who ate not one but two family sized packets of kettle crisps. I was going to throttle her.

YANBU - I too find cinemas unbearably loud. Theres an app you can get to measure the decibels, we ought to do a MN survey...

witchofmiddx · 13/08/2013 15:22

I am a deaf hearing aid wearer. The last time I went to the cinema, even after removing my hearing aids, the volume was 'deafening' for me. I do not think it is widely understood how damaging this is to the average person's hearing. The more times you subject yourself to it, the more and earlier your hearing deteriorates. It is not difficult to understand.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/08/2013 15:24

I've got really good hearing but love the cinema being loud. We have attached neighbours so I'm always conscious of not being a pain with the telly volume. At the cinema no worries!

However if yours was wine last week and isnt this week then something has gone a bit pear shaped somewhere.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/08/2013 15:25

not wine, fine.

lovestogarden · 13/08/2013 15:29

DS has got some ear defenders somewhere. I going to borrow them next time!

Other people are far more irritating that the sound though. Bring back the scary usher/ettes who would blast a tourch in your face and hiss at you to keep quiet (or fling you out)! Ahhh happy days!
I was once at a 9pm film screening and about 30 mins into the film two women with 4 kids (about 10-14 years old) crashed in (adults a tad tipsy) made a huge song and dance about which row to be in, what order to sit in, who had what food, etc. They then loudly told the youngest kid to go and get two beers. Child whinged a bit, got threatened, wandered off then came back complaining loudly that he couldn't buy beer (well, duh!), and got sent back again to buy beer, came back again empty handed. Mum swore. Complained loudly. Complained a bit more. Stomphed off for own beer. Came back. Tutted and bitched about woman in front who turned aroud to see 'the show' going on behind her. Two older kids sat with their eyes glued to their i-phones (the lights are bloody bright!). When they left, the floor was ankle deep in wrappers, cans, bottes...

ppeatfruit · 13/08/2013 16:50

Well ohyoubadkitten If you go a lot your good hearing won't last (if your ears hurt afterwards that's damage). As witchofmiddx says you have to be careful with your hearing we're not robots.

thisisyesterday · 13/08/2013 16:53

yanbu at all!
i also find it almost painfully loud. it's really unnecessary

our local cineworld does autism friendly screenings where the volume is lower and you can still hear it just fine, so not sure why they insist on having it so loud for everyone else

bishboschone · 13/08/2013 16:55

IMAX is really really loud .. !!!

ihatethecold · 13/08/2013 22:16

I could have written you post yesterday op.
went to cineworld to see despicable me with my dd9

We both said it was uncomfortably loud. And freezing! Confused

TheMagicKeyCanFuckOff · 13/08/2013 22:56

Despicable Me 2 was fine for me, with the noise, but my friend complained that it hurt her and her daughter's ears, so I think it could be quietened slightly.
