I am Irish living in Ireland but did live in UK for a number years. I honestly thought that the class system was dead and buried and yet I have seen it mentioned on here quiet frequently.
Does it still exist, if so can you give me an idea of what type of people belong in each class, how does your occupation influence your class and indeed your behaviour? Can people move up and down classes according to their own life style? And how much is this class system actually acknowledged today?
Personally speaking I am glad there is no class system here in Ireland.

Well worth waiting for, really fantastic. Won't spoil it for you but hurry up Netflix and get to Skyler's!!! Beer, I loved The Wire but BB is WAAAY better.

OP you have been told by a number of Irish people that there is indeed a class system in Ireland. The CSO collects and publishes census data relating to class. Skyler has outlined a potted history for you. I think that's the end of your "debate".

On the subject of "second subject" perhaps Deemail is Irish and was referring to the fact that many Irish teachers teach two subjects - usually the subjects they majored in eg English and History. Never thought it was a soft option myself however.

I have a degree in history. I should have saved my parents (and myself) a lot of money and just learned it on my own. Wink

Actually knowing it is no good! you need the documentation to prove you know it! I say this as somebody who speaks a foreign language but I learnt it on the streets. People respect the paperwork.

I read three threads today and two of them mentioned class, it's an eye opener.
