AIBU in thinking my gentleman friend is a bit thick?

I'm sure all MNs know that cows' milk isn't good for cats. It upsets their digestion and they're better off with just water. However, supermarkets, pet stores sell a product that's non-diary called 'cats' milk' (I think it's non-lactose, possibly soya based?) I bought a bottle for my cat (she ignored it) and was telling my gentleman friend about the stuff. He looked amazed - and, quite seriously, said it must be ever so difficult to milk a cat!!! So did they have cat farms, he asked, with herds of cats that were regularly milked?

He was quite offended when I fell about laughing.

I brought my new baby twins into the office for a visit and one of the ladies (mid 40's) asked how many weeks it would be until they opened their eyes ..... she only had dogs

thebody · 09/08/2013 12:08

oh bless. yes bit thick although my cats drink cows milk.

oldgrandmama · 09/08/2013 12:14

thebody, until recently I thought cows' milk OK for cats - all my cats had it, along with water. All the pussies thrived (apart from getting themselves run over eventually). However, vet put me on the straight and narrow re no milk for moggies. I do (the shame) give my puss a spoonful of cream occasionally, when using it in cooking, and she loves cheeses such as camembert, brie. I didn't mean to alarm cat-owning MNs - carry on with the milk if the cats are OK.

They have rows of tiny little milking stools and cats lined up, surely! Grin

Suelford · 09/08/2013 12:24

Cow's milk, goat's milk, it tells you where the milk is from, not who drinks it! He's not thick! OK, maybe a little bit Grin

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 09/08/2013 12:25

No, You nobody milks by hand any more!

The cats are herded into herringbone parlours and line up in their own "booth" allowing the cathand to stick the suctiony things on each of them - much more efficent as you get them done in cohorts of dozen or so at a time Grin

OfficerMeow · 09/08/2013 12:29

You can give some cats milk as a treat, most are lactose intolerant but some, like mine love a bowl of milk every now and then.

DrDance · 09/08/2013 12:30

well I told all my children that a gammon is a wild animal, is wooly like a sheep but pink, and they are very very shy so you'll never see one on a wildlife programme or in a zoo

Became a problem when my eldest explained to his girlfriend (who didn't eat pork) that a gammon was not pork, it did not come from a pig, it came from a gammon, who live wild in the highlands of Scotland

My cat hates cats milk though, it's like melted icecream

Jux · 09/08/2013 12:40

I told dh and dd that Haggis is an animal living in the Scottish Highlands. Its right legs are shorter than its left legs, enabling it to scramble up very steep hills clockwise. Unfortunately, it's not so helpful coming down, so they often fall, breaking their necks. There are specialist Haggis Pickers who collect the dead Haggis, and get it ready for sale.

No one believed me though. Sad

YouTheCat · 09/08/2013 12:45

DoftheS, I'll have you know I get my cat milk from a specialist free range supplier! Grin

You know that advert with the cat 'being more dog'? My exfil thinks they have trained a cat to do those things and that it hasn't been edited/photoshopped. He also thought the free-running Whiskas ad was trained cats too. Hmm

Secretswitch · 09/08/2013 12:49

StinkyElfCheese, I laughed myself silly over your post!

PlotTwist · 09/08/2013 12:53

YouTheCat, you have ruined my enjoyment of that advert. I am now devastated. Bereft at the thought that there are no cats happily Being More Dog. weeps

YouTheCat · 09/08/2013 12:56

But it is so obviously fictional! I mean what cat, given a cat's life, would want to be more dog? Grin

Secretswitch · 09/08/2013 12:58

Indeed! Remember that entire thread about poo eating dogs!? Secret's cats were shocked and appalled..

Jan49 · 09/08/2013 13:05

LOL

When I was a child (60s/70s), I think it was normal to give a cat cow's milk to drink rather than water. We had a cat who didn't like it and only drank water and that was seen as unusual. Our other cat drank cow's milk.

NicholasTeakozy · 09/08/2013 13:29

My last cat used to love cheese, preferably a nice strong cheddar. It was her favourite treat.

HintofBream · 09/08/2013 15:20

I am guilty of cruel and unsuitable cat feeding. I buy squirty cream from Lidl and he has a blob most days. He goes mad if he fancies some and we have run out.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 09/08/2013 16:07

I have three cats. The youngest got used to 'kitten milk' and still happily drinks it now (as the occasional treat), the older two ignore the clean water in the bowl and go and find dirty rain water instead, the dirty buggers.

My oldest has been now to go through the bin bags and eat pizza and chicken korma! He also had a good old lick of STBExs steak that was defrosting on the side awhile back - cat is on MY side in the split Grin.

YouTheCat · 09/08/2013 16:59

My old cat (sadly long gone) used to like a bit of sweetcorn but would go absolutely mental for melon. Proper climbing up my legs mad.

My current moggy isn't a foodie. I could leave a whole cooked chicken and she wouldn't bat an eyelid. She is a bit odd though. Likes to climb up dp and hit him on the face. Grin

thismumismad · 09/08/2013 18:42

I have a cat that goes bonkers for corn on the cob

raisah · 09/08/2013 18:50

He wasn't my brother was he by any chance?!! That definitely sounds like one of my brothers' many words of wisdom!

BabyStone · 09/08/2013 18:58

I had a cat that loved Wotsits and my dad's cat eats spaghetti

celticclan · 09/08/2013 19:20

We had loads of cows when I was growing up and they always drank cats milk I had no idea that it was bad. I only found out recently that chocolate was bad for dogs and our dog was fed loads of the stuff.

Caoilainn · 09/08/2013 19:33

Your cows drank cats milk celticclan?! Grin
