AIBU in thinking my gentleman friend is a bit thick?

I'm sure all MNs know that cows' milk isn't good for cats. It upsets their digestion and they're better off with just water. However, supermarkets, pet stores sell a product that's non-diary called 'cats' milk' (I think it's non-lactose, possibly soya based?) I bought a bottle for my cat (she ignored it) and was telling my gentleman friend about the stuff. He looked amazed - and, quite seriously, said it must be ever so difficult to milk a cat!!! So did they have cat farms, he asked, with herds of cats that were regularly milked?

He was quite offended when I fell about laughing.

If it makes you feel better, he is clearly not the only one... I think this is from a Co-Op somewhere:-

OP - that is properly brilliant, and I've just scared the dog half to death when I roared with laughter.

Does he believe anything else particularly daft? Grin

One of my cats has a thing for yogurt, always licks the carton clean after I'm done! Other one had kitty milk as a kitten but no desire for dairy now. Wonder if the yogurt loving one had cows milk as a kitten (we got her aged 4 as a rescue)

Hasn't he watched "meet the Fockers" Grin

My old cat was a fiend for crisps. Beef ones for preference but not too fussy.

I think his question is quite reasonable. I have wondered what the ingredients were in the past.

The Whiskas one at least seems to be lactose reduced milk, though it doesn't state if it's cows or goats or sheep. KMR contains "dry skimmed milk", too, which is one of the few ingredients which doesn't look like they've been raiding the chem lab at school.

cats like butter too.

Youcanringmybell · 10/08/2013 10:09

I have a cat that eats like a horse - anything meaty or dairy-ish (given half the chance).
My other cat would turn her nose up at a Kobi Beef dinner..she eats about a table spoon of food a day and drinks 'mature' water from puddles and the like.
She has an air of Royalty about her and obviously takes great pride in her girlish figure Grin

I think you are being harsh. Cow's milk comes from cow, goat's milk comes from goats, obviously cat's milk must come from cats.

Before reading this thread I was unaware that cow's milk wasn't good for cats, and also that it is possible to buy "cat's milk." I would have thought exactly the same as your gentleman friend, my mind would have been boggling at the thought of cats being milked, which would have motivated me to immediately gain clarification from you.

(I feel my IQ has declined severely with age, but I'm sure it is still above average.)

ComposHat · 10/08/2013 12:23

Of courde it is real cat milk. Where do you think the expression 'like herding cats' comes from? Catherding is a very difficult and highly skilled job.

HarrietSchulenberg · 10/08/2013 13:15

Everyone knows it's mice that milk cats, on tiny little milking stools in tiny little dairies. That's why cats dislike mice so much, especially the toms. Mice will try to milk every cat, regardless of gender Grin .

YouTheCat · 10/08/2013 13:23

Well, my moggy wasn't having any of it. Maybe I should get a mouse? Back to cow's milk in my coffee. Grin
