To want to be able to buy drinks without sweetener in them?

LittleMissGerardButlerfan · 08/08/2013 11:47

I have noticed that lots of drinks now have it in, even the ones which aren't low sugar.

I hate the aftertaste of them, and they give me terrible wind Blush

I don't drink tea or coffee so drink squash, but even they seem to be getting harder to find without it. I like high juice but the low sugar ones are getting more and more and it's sometimes hard to find a normal one. A lot of squashes like Robinsons have it in all their squashes.

And fizzy drinks like fanta and sprite have it, the low sugar and the normal ones now!

So AIBU to want to buy drinks with sugar in instead? Yes I know you shouldn't have too much, and try to not drink too much but I would like to have a drink of it sometimes.

My not so darling husband says that sweetener has been proved to be fine and doesn't affect people so I basically must be making it up Hmm

Aldi do a nice pink lemonade with no sweeteners in it, in a glass bottle.

LittleMissGerardButlerfan · 11/08/2013 18:53

Ooh that sounds nice we have an Aldi nearby I shall get some thanks Isildur

Most of the supermarkets do high juice that is sweetener free.

Tesco high juice with a green label is the sugary stuff, the no sugar hi juice has a blue label. We normally get blackcurrant or orange and mandarin

Morrisons apple and elderflower is really nice.

Asda do a nice orange and mango as do Sainsburys

But, as I said up-thread...watch out for glucose- fructose. That is the 'corn sugar' that sugar full juices contain. Its very bad for humans.

The liver is unable to break it down. In the US it is known as HFCS.

Google that. :)

coffeeinbed · 11/08/2013 21:01

I didn't know that.
I only drink water and never buy anything sweet fizzy drinks apart from the very occasional tonic water for Campari. Even the DCs drink water.

Will look at the labels next time.

oohdaddypig · 11/08/2013 21:12

I would rather give DCs aspartame than Glucose- fructose syrup. It's in everything now - cheap jams etc.... It's ghastly stuff Hmm

ILikeBirds · 11/08/2013 22:00

The tesco hi juice i have has the following ingredients

Blackcurrant juice from concentrate
Sugar
Water
Preservatives (potassium sorbate)
Vitamin C
Citric Acid

Orange and Mandarin is much the same but with concentrated orange/lemon and mandarin juice.

No sweetener and no corn syrup

stopprocrastinating · 11/08/2013 22:50

I just drink water or wine now for this very reason.

TooPissedtoTalk · 12/08/2013 00:43

No aspartame and very little glucose-fructose/HFCS in our house. DH is diabetic so drinks diet soda but the kids aren't allowed to touch it. Makes it difficult to find things I'm willing to buy. One of the few biscuits I'll buy with glucose-fructose is Jaffa Cakes. I've started to bake again as it is so hard to find things without the nasties.

Thumbwitch · 12/08/2013 05:06

Of course the body is able to digest high fructose corn syrup! That's part of the bloody problem. If you like science, try reading this abstract www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15051594 for their thoughts on the use of HFCS and the obesity epidemic in the USA.

themedicalbiochemistrypage.org/fructose.php this link is a bit biochemistryish but it explains again that the effect of too much fructose can be orexigenic (as in, increase appetite). It also explains that HFCS isn't THAT different to sucrose (normal table sugar) but for those who care about such things, it is worth pointing out that any corn used to create HFCS in the USA will be genetically modified corn.

Morning, I think I've just signed the petition...seemed to go in a loop- or has it closed? I've been avoiding/trying to avoid sweeteners for years but they do seem to be everywhere now. Activia yoghurt has it now, just normal Activia! Last time I bought them thought they tasted weird, checked the label and yes they now have it. Haven't bought them since. Loads of stuff has come off my shopping list over the years. For fizz now we have fruit juice or carefully selected diluting juice mixed with fizzy water or soda water.

coffeeinbed · 12/08/2013 09:15

I had a snoop around in the fridge - Waitrose own label creamy yoghurt has sugar, not sure about their layered one because the paper bit's gone.
Tho only biscuits I buy have sugar as well.
[shocked] about the plain Activia though.

ouryve · 12/08/2013 09:22

Sainsburys and M&S own brand squashes don't have them in - and their sugar free ones have sucralose rather than aspartame, saccharin etc.

Rock's cordial used to be lovely (no idea if you can still get it, though I have seen similar ones) - no sweeteners or preservatives, though you have to keep it in the fridge, once it is open. I used to give it to DS1.

ouryve · 12/08/2013 09:28

Damn - link doesn't work.

Sainsburys only ever use sucralose as a sweetener in their drinks, anyhow - and the ones that have sugar in have just that.

Habbibu · 12/08/2013 09:32

It's actually quite easy to make your own cordials - really just flavoured sugar syrups. Store in a sterilised jar in the fridge and serve with sparkly water. Made a lovely ginger and lemongrass one the other day. I haven't tried making fruit one, but a friend has, and it was lovely, even with just plain water.

GoAndDoSomeWork · 12/08/2013 09:57

Signed it - also hate the gradual creep in of sweeteners. I can't stand the taste and yes the rats cancer experiment influences me too. What I hate is that drinks with sweeteners are constantly being thrust at my daughter at any kids events. It is hard for her to know the taste difference and often gets wierd looks if she asks for plain water. Did you know that in France you can get caffeine free full sugar coke? We wrote to coca cola UK to ask if they would consider stocking in the UK but they said there was no demand ...

Jas · 12/08/2013 11:07

I have always avoided sweetener laden drinks, and have also noticed recently that they are harder to find. I have bought no-added-suger drinks for my daughter as I thought she is older and it would be ok. (She is 12)
Last term she was complaining of headaches alot..... I now think it may have been the squash. She has been better recently, but the drink I have in now is tesco high juice with no sweetener!

I have signed the petition linked below, but also have a question.

Is sucralose as bad as the others? I have just checked everything in my kitchen and found drinks containing sucralose, so am now wondering if I should be avoiding them for her too.

Also, as a useful piece of info - frubes contain no sweeteners at all, so for those of you looking for child friendly yoghurts that could be an option.

ouryve · 12/08/2013 11:36

Sucralose is as unknown as any other sweetener, Jas, but doesn't taste quite as nasty and a lot of people find that they or their kids don't react as badly to it as they do to aspartame. It's a chemically modified sugar, rather than something completely different which happens to have a sweet taste, which is probably why it tastes better.

Jas · 12/08/2013 16:03

Thanks ouryve Smile

LittleMissGerardButlerfan · 12/08/2013 17:19

I looked in sainsburys today, as I thought I might be able to get their squash without having to get high juice, all of their other squash is that sugar free stuff, and it's not a small store.

On a positive note though I got some of their bitter lemon which doesn't have sweetener in yay! :o

25 signatures.
Saw a bottle in tesco that claimed No artificial colors, no artifice flavours, so just assumed "no artificial sweeteners" was given - but no, its just not worth putting on the bottle :O

LittleMissGerardButlerfan · 13/08/2013 13:50

That's what irritates me *next

LittleMissGerardButlerfan · 13/08/2013 13:54

Oops sorry posted too soon, that's what irritates me nextphase it's not clear. I didn't realize normal fanta, tango etc have it in till I looked at the label as I though it was just in the low sugar drinks.

I don't expect I'll get anywhere near enough signatures but never mind!

I might tweet/fb the big supermarkets and ask why they don't carry more drinks without sweetener in, I know they won't get rid of it completely but it would be nice to be able to buy more drinks without it.

So crap to have sugar as the second highest ingredient but then chuck a load of sweeteners in as well Confused
