To want to be able to buy drinks without sweetener in them?

LittleMissGerardButlerfan · 08/08/2013 11:47

I have noticed that lots of drinks now have it in, even the ones which aren't low sugar.

I hate the aftertaste of them, and they give me terrible wind Blush

I don't drink tea or coffee so drink squash, but even they seem to be getting harder to find without it. I like high juice but the low sugar ones are getting more and more and it's sometimes hard to find a normal one. A lot of squashes like Robinsons have it in all their squashes.

And fizzy drinks like fanta and sprite have it, the low sugar and the normal ones now!

So AIBU to want to buy drinks with sugar in instead? Yes I know you shouldn't have too much, and try to not drink too much but I would like to have a drink of it sometimes.

My not so darling husband says that sweetener has been proved to be fine and doesn't affect people so I basically must be making it up Hmm

Waitrose do a 50/50 squash which doesn't have sweetener it. It's what we have.

KitCat26 · 08/08/2013 12:10

Yanbu! I can taste it too.

I thought one supermarket (Sainsburys?) had trialled stopping putting aspartame in their own brand fizzy drinks. It was a while ago though so I may have dreamt it.

JuliaScurr · 08/08/2013 12:10

yy - yanbu

Hi juice is lovely healthy sugar
Drench bottle drinks, too
the more expensive ones usually

LittleMissGerardButlerfan · 08/08/2013 12:10

I would actually cry if they put sweetener in wine!

I have to be careful which cider I drink as some have it in.

I automatically check the labels now.

I agree.

I stick to ribena, appetiser or fruit juice topped with fizzy water.

nextphase · 08/08/2013 12:11

I'd rather give the kids full sugar (anf full fat, for that point), than load them with artificial sweetners.

Ribina here for the grown ups.
Diluted Apple juice or, the latest hit (maybe because its the same coloir as the ribina they rarely see the grownups drink?) is blueberry juice, again well diluted for the kids when I don't think they drunk enough during the day.

I wish they would start labeling things artificial sweetner free!

And don't get me started on the "mayo" free sarnies. Salad creem is just as evil, as is creme fresh etc

LittleMissGerardButlerfan · 08/08/2013 12:12

Julia the drench drinks in the 500ml bottles have sweetener in now too.

I used to love them and one day I thought, yuk this tastes horrible. Checked the date and it was fine, looked at the label and saw it had them in :(

Give me sugar any day :o

Yadnbu I hate the stuff, aspartame gives me migraines so I've been avoiding it for years, I drink Ribena or fruit juice diluted, appletiser and 7up I think. Even schweppes add aspartame to their full sugar lemonade which leaves me having to have soda as a mixer in pubs if I go out as a lot have schweppes as their lemonade and I can't drink coke/Pepsi

J2O now have sweetener in, but not aspartame iirc.

It's all rubbish Hmm

My migraine 'magic pills' I used to be prescribed even had it in so I had to change them and certain soluble painkillers have it in too

MalcolmTuckersMum · 08/08/2013 12:16

ThisWay - what is it 50/50 of then if it doesn't have sweetener? Genuinely curious......... Smile

JollyHappyGiant · 08/08/2013 12:17

Sprite has just started putting sweeteners in :(

Some own brand cordials are fine. There's basically no lemonade that's sweetener free.

LittleMissGerardButlerfan · 08/08/2013 12:24

I know Jolly I couldn't believe it when Sprite had it in too!

For some reason 7up and Pepsi give me stomach cramps but I didn't think they had sweetener in?

I can't order a shandy or a white wine and lemonade in a pub, because they all seem to have sweetener in the lemonade :(

I have to avoid chewing gum as well as they all seem to have it in too!

It was Sainsburys.

Not sure if they still don't use aspartame in their pop as 2010 was the last reference I found.

TarkaTheOtter · 08/08/2013 12:31

As a diabetic I bloody love sweeteners.

Mamf74 · 08/08/2013 12:32

We use Sainsbury's for their No Added Sugar squash- it has Sucralose in which doesn't seem to give me the headaches and nasty taste in my mouth that Aspartame and Acesulfame (sp!) give me. It also tastes more "normal" - we got the same No Added Sugar stuff from Morrison's and it tastes so un-natural in comparison.

Sainsbury's do seem to be the only supermarket that only use sucralose in their drinks instead of the other sweeteners, and it is stupid that sugar & sweetener now seem the norm.

JuliaScurr · 08/08/2013 12:32

Thanks,Little
Drench too???

ShadeofViolet · 08/08/2013 12:33

Its worse in yogurt!

LittleMissGerardButlerfan · 08/08/2013 12:36

I know Julia I couldn't believe it, I loved their drinks!

I don't mind it being in some drinks as I appreciate its useful for people like TarkaTheOtter but its creeping in more and more, I would expect it in low sugar drinks, but not in other drinks.

What has happened though, is that drinks that haven't got artificial crap in them they are full of GLUCOSE-FRUCTOSE.

very bad also, known in the US as HFCS= high fructose syrup.

Google for just how bad it is. Its in almost everything in the US. It has been sneakily added to Ribena etc...when it used to made with sugar!

Feminine · 08/08/2013 12:41

Oh and Aspartame is not banned in the US.

Its the vile alternative (unless you buy 'health food') products , to the HFCS!

LifeIsBetterInFlipFlops · 08/08/2013 12:46

Even Robinson's squash has aspartame in it.

chicaguapa · 08/08/2013 12:48

I have this problem too and have stopped drinking lots of drinks because they've added sweetner. I have to check the ingredients all the time as often manufacturers change their recipe, like J20 who didn't use to use sweetners but now do.

So now I only drink Coke or Waitrose Hi Juice.

Interestingly, I was in Spain over half term and I noticed that the Fanta Naranja and Limon over there didn't have sweetners in. I wonder why? Confused

Feminine · 08/08/2013 12:49

Yes , life for me that is the biggest shock!

Looking at it during Wimbledon, with the Royal stamp and all that! Hmm

Quenelle · 08/08/2013 12:50

YADNBU

My mum and sister both get debilitating migraines if they have drinks with sweeteners. Mum says R Whites lemonade is OK, but even most tonic waters contain sweetener.

Sister has to choose cider carefully because, as you say, many have sweetener.

It's the same with Angel Delight-type things. According to Mum, only Asda's own brand doesn't contain sweetener.

I assume it's due to the cost of sugar. Cheaper own brand cereals tend to contain less sugar than more expensive branded ones.

ChasedByBees · 08/08/2013 12:53

Yes this is my pet peeve too - you have to go to real effort to find a cold drink without them (apart from water obviously).

MrsHoarder · 08/08/2013 12:58

Try water with a slice of lemon or sprig of mint? I've given up on squash entirely, either proper fruit juice, water or tea or wine
