AIBU to want to drive at the correct speed

All bloody morning I've had people driving an inch behind me, some shaking their heads, some then overtaking and looking glaringly into my car - all because I am daring to drive bang on the speed limit.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of these people who do 20 in a 30mph zone but having already got points for speeding I am not prepared to speed up just so other people are less annoyed.

I am usually quite stubborn about things like this so am not usually bothered but today it has really irritated me.
Plus these people tend to be the same ones who drive in full daylight with their bloody full headlights on.

Oh I don't know, maybe I need to go an have a lie down.

Assuming you are observing correct lane discipline, YANBU.

I am with you on the headlights in daylight...find them quite intimidating.

MorrisZapp · 08/08/2013 09:17

This is one of the many reasons I don't drive. When on driving lessons, my instructor would always make me drive at or within the posted legal limit, and a queue of enraged drivers would build up behind me.

There is no right answer that I can see. Break the law, or piss everybody off, that's the choice.

As a nervous driver I couldn't handle anybody getting annoyed with me.

MsVestibule · 08/08/2013 09:19

As long as you're not driving under the speed limit when the conditions allow you to drive at it, then no, YANBU! Ignore them, and when they're overtaking, don't look at them so you won't see their expression.

iamadoozermum · 08/08/2013 09:19

This is so annoying isn't it. Though, I once had the pleasure of driving at 30 in a 30 area, being tail-gated by some muppet who then aggressively over-took, including giving me fingers and cutting me up, they then sped off at high speed - straight towards the mobile speed camera further down the road Grin.

livinginwonderland · 08/08/2013 09:21

I'm learning to drive and the road near my house is 30mph and during the day, you can't overtake due to how busy it is. I drive bang on 30 and I get people tailgating me the entire time. It's SO frustrating, especially because learning to drive is stressful enough as it is!

Manchesterhistorygirl · 08/08/2013 09:23

You are not being unreasonable to drive at the speed limit, but you are being unreasonable about headlights. My car is black, black paint, wheels and tinted windows and you'd be amazed how people don't see it so I always have my headlights on

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHopeful · 08/08/2013 09:27

My cars headlights come on automatically, although I think they are low beam so shouldn't be too intimidating.

Of course you should be able to drive at the speed limit.

FreudiansSlipper · 08/08/2013 09:27

if you were driving on a motorway in middle or far right lane then yabu

if on road then YANBU

DoctorWhosUnderpants · 08/08/2013 09:31

This really pisses me off. So many men do this and seem to think it's perfectly acceptable. I often wonder if they are in a hurry because they are about to shit theirselves, or need to get home for Pointless, or desperately need a sandwich. We don't live near big cities or motorways, so really what the fuck is the point? Where do you need to be in such a hurry?

Yanbu

bamboostalks · 08/08/2013 09:31

The headlights are ridiculous, this seems to be becoming widespread practice now. Annoying, just turn them off the auto setting.

tmae · 08/08/2013 09:31

I like driving at the speed limit and watching people get annoyed, I go round a local park at 20mph exactly (the speed limit, and there are often police cars) and see how many cars I can collect. I am a bit power mad though! I drive a tiny car too and I think that people expect me to be intimidated but I simply couldn't care less, and the fact that they are so petty that they get wound up is amusing to me.

I get annoyed at people who go way below the limit (or sit at roundabouts for ages when there is plenty of chance to go!), but doing the speed limit is what you are supposed to do so just enjoy the fact that they are getting wound up for no good reason, and that the law is in your side so what are they going to do? Also if someone is tailgating you, you are supposed to slow down as said above, I remember it from my theory test, so if you do that you are just abiding the law

tmae · 08/08/2013 09:32

Also if you are on a motorway the speed limit is still 70 regardless of lane, but I always move over once done overtaking but will happily overtake at 70 if I need to

msshapelybottom · 08/08/2013 09:35

YANBU about the tailgating, it's so dangerous and intimidating. One of my pet hates when I'm driving.

I often have my dipped headlights on even in daylight though, especially on days when the sun is glaring a lot. It makes vehicles easier to see and I'm all for increased visibility!

FreudiansSlipper · 08/08/2013 09:35

I know the speed limit but you are not meant to stay in the middle or right lanes you should be moving to the left

HorryIsUpduffed · 08/08/2013 09:35

tmae I'm Shock .

You aren't supposed to drive "at the speed limit", but at a speed appropriate to the conditions that does not exceed the published limit.

And it absolutely isn't your job to police the speed limit. Doing so increases the danger on your stretch.

bonzo77 · 08/08/2013 09:36

Ummm. It depends. Are you sitting at 70 in the right hand lane when you could pull in and let these more aggressive drivers past?

Manchesterhistorygirl · 08/08/2013 09:37

www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/safety/daytime-running-lights.html

The reason you notice more cars with their headlights on.

dirtyface · 08/08/2013 09:39

oh i hate this too

bloody aggressive twats

AKAK81 · 08/08/2013 09:40

Silly question but are you sure you're actually at the correct limit? What sort of roads are these on?

And the idiots talking about cars with headlights on - you do realise that daytime running lights have been a legal requirement on all cars type approved after Feb 2011? Most cars don't have the option to disable them.

FobblyWoof · 08/08/2013 09:40

In most new cars there isn't an option of turning ofc the lights. They come on and stay on (those these are usually sude lights). There is no option of simpltmy turning them off.

FreudiansSlipper · 08/08/2013 09:42

I think in German cars this has been standard for a number of year, they are not glaring so its not really a problem

mystaplerisevil · 08/08/2013 09:43

in the real world though Wink most people drive just about the limit and usually lots higher than the nsp on motorways, it's just a fact. i don't think i have seen anyone sticking ridgidly to the limit unless they are eldery. just my observations not saying it's right

mystaplerisevil · 08/08/2013 09:44

'above' not about. argh for a quick edit key
