AIBU to want to drive at the correct speed

Freudianslap · 08/08/2013 09:07

All bloody morning I've had people driving an inch behind me, some shaking their heads, some then overtaking and looking glaringly into my car - all because I am daring to drive bang on the speed limit.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of these people who do 20 in a 30mph zone but having already got points for speeding I am not prepared to speed up just so other people are less annoyed.

I am usually quite stubborn about things like this so am not usually bothered but today it has really irritated me.
Plus these people tend to be the same ones who drive in full daylight with their bloody full headlights on.

Oh I don't know, maybe I need to go an have a lie down.

Headlights thing bugs the hell out if me, however it's standard on all post 2012 models that they have permanent running lights.

As long as you were in the slow lane then YANBU, give them a break test and they will soon back off Grin arseholes!!

AKAK81 · 08/08/2013 12:29

No such thing as a 'slow lane' or a 'fast lane' for that matter. Using these terms just helps cause the lane discipline problems that we have on motorways and multilane dual carriageways. There are simply lanes 1, 2, 3 etc.

chicaguapa · 08/08/2013 12:36

No such thing as a 'slow lane' or a 'fast lane' for that matter They used to be called that in the old highway code when motorways were invented. That's why lots of old people hog the middle lane lane 2.

Fakebook · 08/08/2013 12:36

Yanbu about the tailgating, just let them pass.

Yabu about the headlights. It's a pet hate of mine when people with the sun behind them don't have their headlights on because people on the other side can't see the cars properly if that makes sense.

IShallWearMidnight · 08/08/2013 12:38

I had a idiot overtake me on a residential road last night (30 limit, quite bumpy so uncomfortable to be even doing that) at about 50. We did laugh very loudly when we got to the next set of traffic lights which had turned red just as he arrived at them, and turned green just as I pulled up, and carried on laughing as we followed him along the next stretch which is full of of parked cars, beds and nasty speed bump. Must have followed him for a good 10 minutes and as both of us has our windows open, he'll have heard the laughing and pisstaking Grin

MadBusLady · 08/08/2013 12:43

YANBU obviously.

Proper lol at this Grin

I often wonder if they are in a hurry because they are about to shit theirselves

SelectAUserName · 08/08/2013 12:55

So long as you know what the speed limit actually is and don't think the NSL for a normal car is 40 or 50 (amazing how many people seem to think this is the case) and have noticed signs marking a change in the limit and adjusted accordingly, YANBU.

We have one 'fast stretch' linking two towns. It's a broad road with good visibility and no tight bends, so no reason not to do 60 in a normal car when the traffic and environmental conditions are safe to do so. I drive along this stretch regularly and around 30-40% of the time, I end up stuck behind someone who either a) hasn't noticed the NSL sign at the end of the 30 stretch and thinks they're still in a 30, despite the lack of street lights and the open fields on either side; b) isn't confident driving at 60 despite the dry, safe, good visibility conditions or c) seems to think that the NSL is 40 or 50mph.

I don't tailgate but it is flipping annoying!

mummymeister · 08/08/2013 13:04

I want one of those illuminated moving display thingys on the back window of my car. on it I want to display messages to the car behind me like - get off your bloody phone its illegal, the speed limit is 30 and that is what I am doing, stop picking your nose thinking no one can see you. I also want an electronic zapper that I can point at people on their phones whilst driving. it will zap the phone completely burning it out and give the user a very nasty shock. this situation where people are getting more and more and more aggressive over simple things, thumping the wheel when I wont speed up or shouting abuse or abuse on line just cannot go on.

redexpat · 08/08/2013 13:45

Don't understand the problem with headlights unless they're halogen ones. It increases the car's visibility. And in scandanavia you have to have them on all the time.

Lonecatwithkitten · 08/08/2013 13:57

We have a notorious road round here over common land there are cattle grids at either end - you'd think that would give it away wouldn't you. It is limited to 30mph I regularly have people overtake me who then have to swerve when we go round the corner as there is surprise surprise a cow in the middle of the road. Not forgetting all the signs warning of livestock!

Think there's some misunderstand about halogen lights here. Halogen bulbs have been the standard used for the last 40 years or so - which most people would consider standard headlight. I think some posters are talking about HID/Xenon lights which are bright with usually a slightly blue tint - these are now being superceded by LED bulb technology.

MyBoysAreFab · 08/08/2013 14:43

YANBU - I used to work in a police traffic department - speed was often a factor in accidents. I saw photos of fatal RTA's, post-mortem reports, dealt with relatives of injured/deceased. Speed limits are there for a reason and actually very slow drivers are every bit as dangerous.

AKAK81 · 08/08/2013 15:20

'Failed to look' is a factor in twice as many fatal accidents than exceeding the speed limit. Its about time that the war on speed changed to become a war on crap driving - unfortunately you actually have to employ more traffic police rather than relying on nice revenue generating speed cameras.

Freudianslap · 08/08/2013 15:21

Glad to hear its not just me being picky about this, I just figure that speed limits are set for a reason and as such I will adhere to them. I would hate to be responsible for a crash and I can also think of better ways to spend speeding fine money!

I will accept that I may be unreasonable in my irritation about the daytime lights, I didn't really know the background until this post. BUT I am still not convinced that full beams are necessary (which is what the guy behind me had this morning). He was also playing bad music really loudly, which is a crime in itself Wink

In response to a couple of questions - yes I do know the speed limits of the roads I drive on, yes I do know how to drive on the motorway (I spend a long time on there and so know how annoying middle lane hoggers etc are) and I don't think I ever suggested I should be 'policing' the roads - I tend to leave that to the police......

Think I will just stick to my guns and maybe try a few of the suggestions on the thread so far - or maybe use my mum's tactic of just smiling politely when these people speed past (sometimes she gives a little wave but I think that may be going a tad too far).

There's a lovely selection here

I particularly like this one for your particular OP. Grin

Reddwarflover · 08/08/2013 15:31

You can never drive fast enough for some people I'm afraid. Happens all the time where I live and I just ignore the stupid fuckers. If they want to drive like cocks they can over take me and piss off. I drive the speed limit and observe all rules and regulations of the Highway Code as its taken me an age to finally get my licence and I'm not risking losing it now!

Freudianslap · 08/08/2013 15:38

Hahaha, oscar I love that sticker!

Yanbu my friends dh went on a speeding course recently the policeman holding it said driving from bath to heathrow breaking speed limits would get you there 6 minutes faster than if you had followed them. Six minutes! So all this stress huffing and puffing to shave minutes off your journey time - pathetic.

ComposHat · 08/08/2013 15:53

YANBU on the proviso that you're sticking to the correct limit.

I am always bemused by the number of people who think that the NSL for a car on single carriage road is 50 and 60 for dual carriageways and drive accordingly.

Right boils my piss.

Snoopingforsoup · 08/08/2013 16:01

It's even worse being tailgated by a maniac on a phone.

My instructor told me that on a motorway, to not keep up with the general flow was dangerous.

But in recognising this, you also have to apply common sense. I hate leaving a safe distance between me and the car in front only to have some muppet trying to undertake the fast lane come and fill it.

YANBU. I wish everyone were a bit more mindful when driving. You can tell a great deal about a person's personality by the way they drive...and there are a lot of stupid, unthinking people out there....

PumpkinPie2013 · 08/08/2013 17:20

YANBU speed limits are there for a reason and should be obeyed.
Tailgating irritates the hell out of me because it is so dangerous - suppose a child ran out and you had to brake sharply - person tailgating wouldn't be able to stop before hitting you.

The only time I drive below the limit is if the road conditions mean it would be unsafe to drive at the limit e.g. ice/snow.

It used to bother me when people were clearly annoyed that I was doing the limit but now I just try to ignore them as I know I'm doing the right thing.

I must say it also irritates me when people drive (sometimes way) above 70 on the motorway. We were involved in a serious accident two years ago on the motorway (other persons fault as she lost control and spun across all three lanes). She smashed into our car and we were all badly injured athough sadly she was worse off as her car was much older and didn't have the impact protection ours did.. Thankfully as my husband was not speeding we all made full recoveries. Had he been speeding the other lady would most likely have died Sad

Sorry that turned into a rant but no you're not unreasonable.

HorryIsUpduffed · 08/08/2013 17:49

I've driven nearly two hundred miles since I last posted on this thread Confused and have the following to offer:

Keep. Your. Fucking. Distance.

That isn't a gap, it's the two-second rule. Fuck off.

There were periods on the M6 today where we were stationary for no other reason than caterpillar bunching which is caused by...? Driving too close.

Wankers.

I was the first to mention "policing the roads" - not addressed at OP but at someone who claimed to take pride in driving around at or slightly below the speed limit just to wind up people who like speeding.

Freudianslap · 08/08/2013 20:24

Horry I was stuck on the M6 today for the same reason, was quietly muttering to myself about tailgaters the whole time!

I just got through the roadworks north of Birmingham and did about half a mile at 70, then boom all the eejits were out and it was shuffle stop shuffle stop until we came off at J18. ARGH.
